hi! i made the yummiest cookies today!!! (if i do say so myself) they are nestle tollhouse; i just replaced the flour with the flour mix i have from ginny nehring's cookbook (she's from Jacksonville, FL) -- cookbook is Brad's Basics. she uses sweet rice flour, white rice flour, tapioca flour and potato starch flour. the dough and the cookies were just...

i think you're right... we're already close, but this is bound to bring us even closer! i talked to my mom today and she remarked on how it was going to make the holidays interesting. i told her i'd already found a recipe for stuffing here! thank you all for your replies -- it helps to know someone is out there listening!

haha! you made me laugh. it's really weird bc i never would have thought anything was wrong with me until D, nausea, etc. started to happen in May. if any of us had ever heard of this, we would have had my sister tested, bc she's had stuff going on digestively for a while. so it's strange that i was the one who found out first. she seems to be handling...

hi, y'all -- my sister just called a half hour ago and had gotten her bloodwork back.... guess what... positive. i feel a lot of different things... somehow guilt, like i brought this on all of us (which i know isn't true!), and sadness for her that she will have to give up foods she loves, and some relief (which i feel guilty for) about the holidays...

hi, guys! i hope everyone gets all better soon! luckily i am having more good days than bad, but i do still have those times where i'm not sure if i ate something bad or am just in the healing process still, so this thread has helped me out! one thing i am doing is keeping a food journal. i've tried off and on since diagnosis but today i'm starting...

hi, toximecfrog! just wanted to say welcome and good luck!! i know how frustrating it can be in the beginning finding out all the things you've been consuming that you didn't realize weren't gluten-free... i too was without the benefit of a dietitian for a few weeks, and i felt really alone! this forum has been a lifesaver, and i'm glad you found it! here...

ARCHIVED Going Out Tonight!
laurelfla replied to laurelfla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
thanks, mahee34 (is that your dog in the picture? -- so cute!!). i actually felt kind of slightly nauseated for most of Saturday after having gone out Friday. maybe i'm just being paranoid. but the only thing that might not have been ok was the "sprite"... i asked the bartender if they had sprite or 7-up, just to see, bc it comes out of the same sprayer?... -
ARCHIVED Flavored Coffees
laurelfla replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
just a bit of info: i called Seattle's Best coffee company and they told me to avoid their flavored coffee products. unflavored are ok. i think i might get a new coffeemaker... is that taking it too far? -
ARCHIVED Coping With The Cost Of This Diet...
laurelfla replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
my grocery bills are astronomical!! and i'm a grad student. i just posted about this in another section, but i'm really frustrated. even when you stick to "unprocessed" foods, it's still expensive. plus, i don't have time to cook from scratch all the time, so i depend on having a loaf of bread on hand or whatnot to help me out. i think food costs can be... -

ARCHIVED College: Living Off-campus
laurelfla replied to quantumsugar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
quantumsugar, this is a very timely topic . i just entered in the latest staggering grocery bill into microsoft money last night and it told me i'd spent $300 this month on groceries! i can't keep this up, i'm just a lowly grad student!! i'm not sure where it all goes... last night i only bought fruits and veggies and meat and it was $50. i guess i... -
ARCHIVED Going Out Tonight!
laurelfla posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
hello, all! after the stressful eating out experience on Wed and thesis-writing pressures, i could really use a night on the town. i was contemplating what i'd order at the bar, and i figured i'd stay with alcohols i know are ok for me (e.g. Bacardi, etc -- i'm not being too adventurous yet, like with distilled alchols). however, i started to wonder about... -
you guys are so wonderful!! thanks for making me feel better. i hate this having to be accomodated... i think eating out will be a fairly rare activity for me. but you're all right, i think i will write a letter. i was talking to Kaiti on aim last night and we agreed that no one would joke around about the presence of sugar in a diabetic person's food...

ok, i need your loving support here. i just got done eating out for the first time in several weeks (at Carrabba's) and i'm feeling sensitive (emotionally, that is!). so far no symptoms, i am keeping my fingers crossed. it was my friend's birthday, so yeah. had to go and be supportive, even though i would've rather gone somewhere with SLIGHTLY LESS PASTA...

ARCHIVED I'm Addicted!
laurelfla replied to skoki-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
have y'all tried Pamela's Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chunk cookies? oh. my. gosh. although they don't hold up to any manhandling, they taste amazing. i think it was celiac3270 that mentioned them before, perhaps. mmmmmm. -
ARCHIVED Bacon?
laurelfla replied to mdono's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
what are nitrates, exactly? i have Oscar Mayer in the fridge right now, but it curls up too much in the pan! i like it *very* crispy. i'll have to try something else next time, thanks for the info! -
ARCHIVED Cosmetics-shampoos, Etc
laurelfla replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
here's the spiel from Estee Lauder... i have started calling every company for all my cosmetics, but initially to read labels i use this list to get me started. they only really apply to products from their family of companies, but the ingredient names should be fairly standard in terms of gluten content, i would think. hope it helps: Thank you for contacting... -
hi! i just got one scheduled... my obgyn had a sign in her office about bone density and my gastro has not been very helpful as far as follow-up, so she set me up with it. i am having to wait about a month though to get in. good luck! oh, and how do you arrange to get vitamin levels tested? is it a blood test? and should i call up the gastro guy and...

ARCHIVED Anyone Tried Those Gf Oreo Type Things?
laurelfla replied to skoki-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i tried glutano, which i was told was as close to Oreos as we could get.... there was a definite wang (whang? sp?) to them. i wouldn't buy them again... the creme was waaaaay off! -
ARCHIVED Come And Rant!
laurelfla replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ok, here's mine! just one rant of many i could post, actually... i'm sick of the comment that comes after i tell someone why i can't eat something. "Oh, my *insert name here* (friend, uncle, mom, sister's best friend's college roommate's niece's cousin, etc, any of these will work) used to have that! Don't worry, there's still plenty you can eat... -
yeah, i got some misinformation from my very first dietitian visit (a different person)... although it was unnecessarily restrictive, at least it wasn't harmful! (she told me to avoid all gums, emulsifiers, any alcohol but wine, rum and tequila, etc) i've learned the hard way that the only way to be sure about gluten is to check it out myself...i guess...

hello, all! i have lucked up and discovered free nutrition services at my university... my therapist recommended it last week and i met with a dietitian last Friday. it was a quick session, mostly just so she could get a feel for the way i was eating. she seemed fairly knowledgeable about things gluten-free, so i'm hopeful. i know that getting set up with...

ARCHIVED Going To Grocery Story Shortly Need Help
laurelfla replied to AmandaD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just bought Nestle Toll House semisweet choc chips to make cookies. i called and they said they would list wheat, rye, barley or oats in the ingredients, so that product is gluten-free. i have Flavorganics Organic Vanilla Extract... it says gluten free on the label. (the only other one i know about for sure is Publix brand -- that is gluten-free. but... -
ARCHIVED More Ranting About This Horrible Disease..
laurelfla replied to SandyShoes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i have my second appointment with my therapist this afternoon and i wasn't sure exactly what to talk about, although i had some ideas... until a friend called just now and told me that people are going out to dinner tonight for another friend's birthday... now, these 2 girls are probably my closest friends here. i think i've made it abundantly clear that...
