  1. sorry, anytime someone needs suggestions to gain weight- i feel like they're talking in martian language

ive never had those kind of issues- but maybe i do have good advice- idk marty- we're all different- FOR ME- i feel BEST & SKINNIEST the more Paleo i can be- any complex carbs keep the weight on me-

so i would suggest, can u eat rice?????? or rice pasta??? this should help 5lbs to always stick... if you're anything like me...

and i think thats good that u eat fish and eggs- what about turkey? i think turkey is high in protein & iron and that almost everybody can digest it (while some cannot handle red meat or chicken).??

also- **you talk about your pets having neuro issues, etc... have u ever heard of Dr. J and his "G.A.R.D. diet". now i know, people on here will get really arguementative about him- and his ideas on how far reaching gluten is and "secondary glutenization"... BUTTTT i am bringing him up because you mention your pets- so i think you should google him- at least for your pets. he's a really nice guy, he's a Veterinarian who has Celiac. and he talks a lot on his website about Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Corn, Neuro Issues, Arthritis, etc, etc, for people AND PETS- you might find it very interesting!

My oldest cat has a brain tumor and is too old to operate. He is on steroids and phenobarbitol. He also has hyperthyroid and I am using Lithium acetate. He has lost over 50% of his weight, my little girl cat has neuro issues that no one can figure out. She walks in circles, has artheritis in her front paws, losing weight, and cannot process what she sees. They think some sort of brain lesion, but not sure what. I take them to a holistic vet by the name of Judith Shoemaker about 40 miles from my home. She does chiro and acupuncure to help their bodies. They eat a raw diet and organic grain free canned. One rescue and 3 Maine Coons. They are my dearest friends and it is difficult.

    Thanks for your input.

  2. Hi Marty-

    Hope the protein drink helps!!

I can relate to the pets issue. My "furry kids" are very important to me. It's difficult to have them become ill.

Hope you get some relief soon. I have pain 24/7 from myofascial pain and I can't take a thing for it...3 years of this and my family wonders how I stay sane.(not sure I am at this point  ) TrP injections did not help me at all. Be careful of too many---if they are steroids, that can impact adrenals, or so I was told by an ND.

Did you notice...everyone has an opinion about food we should eat?? :>)

Take this, try that, don't eat this, do eat that...yikes. If I followed the advice of the doctors and alternative practitioners I have seen, I would have had to eliminate all meat, nightshades, all grains, dairy, soy, gluten, yeast, sugar, eggs, nuts, fish (mercury), oxalates, beans, fruits, ....what the heck is left? "ionized" water (whatever the hell that is), lettuce and spirulina powder? It gets crazy after a while...

Take care and let me know how you make out.

    Ginny

I know what you mean about eating. I find it difficult enough being celiac and vegetarian and then on top of that, everyone has a opinion about everything else. Do fish oil, don't do fish oil. eat nuts, don't eat nuts. Sometimes the pain/discomfort makes me feel like I will never feel "good" again. Just to wake up and feel normal. When I lay in bed the back does not seem to bother me as much and sleep is fine as far a pain. If I stay in bed for a day or two, then I get depressed, because I think, this is how I'm going to spend the rest of my life????

I weigh what I weighed at 17, it was fine then, now I just look pathetic, everything hangs on me. I am only 5'2" and under 100#, small frame. No wiggle room to get sick. Cannot afford to lose anymore. Of course, the IBS is always lurking there in the background, ready to kick in.

I do have an appointment with a PT who does myofasical release. Hopefully he is good. As far as the shots, I have only

gotten them once and don't think I will do that again. I am wearing a lanocaine patch to see if that will help.

I'll let you know how the PT works out.

Thanks for listening and for the feedback.

  3. Hi Marty,

I saw your topic header and thought...that's me! I am newly DXed (1 month ago)and still struggling with so many symptoms, so I am not sure I can be much help to you. I guess I just felt your frustration and feeling of "aloneness" and wanted to respond.

I still suffer that heartburn/throat burning/nausea and hope it will resolve as I continue the gluten-free diet.

I have done all the things you have--for the whole time during '09 and '10....tons of $$$$ on supplements: aloe, slippery elm, digestive enzymes, probiotics, etc. No help.

Reason? I didn't know about the gluten.

But you are gluten-free, so I wonder why you have this now?

One thing I do know is...it is possible to have NOT enough stomach acid (more prevalent in celiacs) rather than too much acid. So taking antacids seems counter-productive. I took them for YEARS on the advice of a gastro...never helped. Now I know why!

Maybe try ONE of the things at a time and see it it helps? the aloe ,made my throat burn more and gave me raging diarrhea...not helpful. Sometimes, too many supps can be problematic.

I can relate about the back pain (I have pain just about everywhere) and in 3 years, I have been to several PTs, chiros, DO, had myofacsial release, several MTs and acupuncture--from 3 diff. people. THOUSANDS of $$$$ and no relief.

My bloodwork shows no RA stuff. ( I do have osteoarthritis but it doesn;t explain the pain and reflux symptoms)

    Nothing seemed to help.

I finally found a PT who specializes in trigger point pain and she is very savvy about gluten and maintains that I will respond better to treatment as the gluten is eliminated and my muscles can respond. I pray she is right.

I have taken stress management classes and I try yoga. You name it, I have done it to get my muscles, my body, my GI tract to relax.

That said, I am not sure why you would have pain now as you have been gluten-free for so long.

    Some things to consider:

Have you been eating anything new/different for you?

Do you eat a lot of soy? I have to avoid that as it makes me sick. Many people on here say the same thing.

You mention two cats being ill. For me, stress makes things worse. I know how difficult it can be dealing with that, too! (Just went through it with one of mine)

You also mention being vegetarian and losing weight. Do you get enough protein?

I dropped 90 lbs, rapidly before DX.It is scary.

A sweet person on here suggested good old pepto bismal to me for the nausea/heartburn. It helps because it contains bismuth, something lacking if you have had a gall bladder issue or if it was removed (like me)

Just some thoughts, having been through this myself. I feel for you and hope you get relief soon. Wish I could be more help. Ginny

Got some injections in trigger points in back, so I understand that concept. The two ill cats are ongoing. Not sure if getting enough protein. Will check that will my chiro tonight who has said something about plant protein drink.

  4. Thanks so much for all of the responses.

I have had an abdominal ultrasound, no gallbladder issues, all organs looked fine, had MRI, discs okay, had x-ray, some osteopenia, nothing dramatic, had barium swallow, mild reflux.

My DO believes that years and years and years spent in front of the computer (my job) and the last seven not really sitting/working correctly has caused repetitive strain, which in turn causes digestive issues. This is not something really new for me as when anything in my back goes out, it affects something on the other side. This time, just much worse and for a much, much longer time. T-4 to T9 trigger points are extremely tight. Release is difficult though he managed to do a little yesterday morning. I sat with heat lamp on it last night, helped to calm it down and helped the reflux. I feel like a dog chasing my tail.

Maybe your right, too many supplements, trying too much, but because I have been battling this for so long, I am beside myself.

I have been a vegetarian for over 35 years, though I do eat fish and eggs. I eat organic, plenty of veggies, use olive oil for cooking, salads, use coconut oil in cerals.

The stress with my animals is ongoing. One is getting ready to leave and the other has neuro issues. They are both senior and I guess I should expect that, but it has been stressful and been going on for 3 years. They are very dear to me and they are both still eating and wanting to be with me, so there is no question about "assisting" them.

I worry about having more food allergies and because my diet is already so limited, I am not sure what else I could give up.

I need to gain weight, any suggestions that would not upset my stomach.

  5. It's been awhile since I have looked at this forum. Thought I was really doing okay. Diagnosed in 2005, been gluten free since then. Diagnosed with Hashi's in 1999. On dissicated thyroid. Lab levels fine.

In 2009 began to have some mid back pain, but because I was in the midst of changing thyroid meds, thought it was all from that. Had a few months of discomfort, then everything seemed to even out. This year, bad cold in summer with fever and cough that lasted a month. Then in September mid back spasms began again, this time with indigestion, heartburn. Been to massage therapist, PT, DO, have done TENS, PENS, heat, cold, acupuncture and everything but the kitchen sick. December began to have horrible heartburn. Had a barium swallow and it showed mild reflux and small hiatia hernia (been there for over 20 years) and mild esphogitis (sp?). Taking DGL, Aloe, probiotics, raw honey, L-Glutamine, digestive enzymes, slippery elm tea, chew gum after I eat. I have no appetite. I am also a vegetarian. I have lost more weight than I can afford and am constantly worried that this will never end.

I have not felt well in so long, I fear I will be like this until I die. I am seeing a physical therapist next week who does myofascial release to see if that will help. I feel nauseous most of the time and am afraid to eat anything. One person says no nuts, no nuts butter, no fat, another, eat nuts. This is all so confusing.

I could use all the help I can get. I feel utterly alone and don't know what to do next. I have tried Priolec and Zantax and Pepcid. None of these worked and from what I have read, do more harm than good.

A lot of stress, two cats that are very ill.

    Thanks for listening.

  6. Hi,

haven't been here in a while, hopefully I can get some feedback.

Diagnosed with Hashi's in 1999, celiac in 2004, IBS in the 60's.

Am currently on 75mg of Armour after trying to do a compounded T-4 due to high (+1000) antibodies which doc thought Armour might be contributing. Long story short, back on Armour 4-5 months ago and began a trial of LDN to try and get the antibodies down and to also help with the celiac portion.

Recently developed reflux, noisy, gurgling stomach, loose bowels, sometimes diarrhea (strict celiac and vegatarian) back aches, and general feeling not all that good, sometimes difficulty swallowing (one reason we increased the Armour, was only doing 45mg daily, with 48mcg of compounded T-4).

I take a really good probiotic, L-Glutamine every day, D-3 (metagenics), get a B-12 shot 2x a month, selenium, folic acid and eat organic.

Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions that maybe I haven't done, tried. I am at my wit's end.

Bloodwork okay, just went for UA on thursday and when they did the dipstick there were mild traces of blood, they're sending out to lab.

    Thanks for any feedback.

  7. Has anyone had any issue with a generic form of Lomotil. I have taken this medication off and on for years. Summertime is always rough on my digestive system and sometimes I have to resort to Lomotil to help quiet things down. I only need maybe 3-4 a month, but it helps.

Got a new prescription filled and it was a different manufacturer. Took it at 8:15AM, by 11:30, I could hardly swallow without extreme pain in my back and then I broke out in a cold sweat and felt faint. It evidently passed, but it was scary and all I could do was assoicate it with the medication.

I have had blood work done recently and an EKG and everything was fine. Has anyone else had issues with meds.

    Thanks.

  8. Yes you can become sensitive to other grains. Especially while your gut is healing. Armour contains corn starch. So it is more likely the lactose in your new pills that is a problem.

It could also be that your body utilized the natural hormones better than the synthetic. This is very common. I cannot take synthetic. And my Sister didnt do well on synthetic either until she added a small amount of Armour to her regular dose. Now my Mom is trying to get some Armour to add to hers after hearing how well we are doing with the natural.

From what I am seeing, a lot of vegetarian Celiacs are finding it hard to eat the alternative grains too. This sucks big time for you. I wish I knew what to tell you other than get to know squashes and potatoes more intimately.

If I get to know my veggies any better, I think my husbanc will leave me.

  10. Glad I found this topic although I am not sure if anybody will come back to it. I also was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 1999 and on Armour until last month when they put me on Thyrolar because of extremely high antibodies. It seems the lactose in the thyrolar has upset my stomach, because I am have constant loose bowels, but then again with the thyroid I never know what state it might be in and hot/humid summer does not help.

Having two auto immune issues are overwhelming at times and I often wonder if being on a limited diet causes more food allergies (I am also a vegetarian). Any suggestions, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I sometimes think there is a feeling of "aloneness" associated with these illnesses.

  11. I do not normally do milk, yogurt (cheese does seem to bother me) so I don't know if there is a problem. Years ago when I did drink some milk, I always bought the lactose free. I don't normally do dairy, except some cheese..

I've been eating mostly rice and don't know if I am becomng allergic to that. Can celiac's develop allergies to the limited grains that are permitted.

    Thanks.

    Marty

  12. Hey,

I was diagnosed with celiac in 2005, IBS in the '60's and Hashimoto's thyroid in 1999. I recently had to change my thyroid meds because my antibodies had reached over 1,000. The pill, I discovered yesterday, has lactose and corn starch in it. Is it possible that the ingredients, due to an already compromised system, have a negative effect.

We also went out about two weeks ago and as soon as I got home, I had a serious bout of diarrhea. Now I spoke with the chief and let him know my limitation, but who knows.

Also, because the diet has it's limitation (I am also a vegatarian) does anyone thing it is possible to become allergic to the few grains that we can eat, and if so, what then.

    Thanks for your response.

    Marty

  13. Thank you for your responses. I have been a vegatarian for over 35 years. For ethical reasons, so change is not something that is possible for me.

Sometimes with the other health issues I don't know if the thyroid is acting up, the medication, or whether the IBS is kicking in. It is all very frustrating.

I have been feeling good for several years, but do have periods of time when things get a little off.

I also have structural issues where my lower back and hip go out and need to be realigned. I just really feel down when stomach issues come up. It has been like this for most of my life and sometimes it is discouraging.

    Thanks,

    Marty

  14. Hi,

I was diagnosed with Celiac in 2005, thyroid in 1999 and IBS in the '60's. and have been following a gluten free diet since then. Been feeling fine for the most part.

I also have IBS and Hashimodos thyroid and have recently changed my thyroid medication due to high antibodies. I am currently on Thyralor. I was on Armour for nine years.

I have been experience more digestive symptoms in the last two weeks and did not know if there is also a seasonal aspect to celiac. More hot and humid weather seems to alter my digestion.

I have taken lomotil to help control the spasms and the constant need to be in the bathroom, but the rumbling and grumbling continues in my gut.

Does anyone else have periods of time when digestive issues come back even though nothing in your diet has changed.

Any feedback would be appreciated, because this stuff makes me crazy and anxious which does not help. I am also a vegetarian, so my diet is already very restricted. Not sure what else I can eliminate.

    Thanks,

    Marty

  15. Hi,

Been awhile since I been here, and I need help with a question. I have very, very fine, thin hair which I henna and perm to try and give it some life. I was thinking of getting a wig, that was how bad it was getting. It was very dry and losing some each day. I finally found a really great shampoo, Wen Lavendar which has worked wonders with my hair, alot less dry and looks and feels so much fuller.

The twist is, I looked at the label last night and there is wheat protein in it. I have not had any upsets (other than the normal spring stuff that usually goes on) and did not know how much of a role shampoo would play with celiac disease.

Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have tried many, many shampoos, from my hairdresser, friends, organic, non organic, baby and nothing has been helpful until now. There was no wheat in any of the previous shampoos.

    Thanks,

    Marty

  16. Hi:

I was diagnosed in '99 with Hashimoto's Thyroid Disease. Autoimmune problem. I am on Armour thyroid 60mg a day.

My blood levels are fine. I was diagnosed with Celiac in July '05 and have been gluten free since then, I also have IBS, since 1959. Orginally diagnosed with Ulcertive Colitis in '58 (also autoimmune).

I'm still cold, though not as much, hair thinning, absolutely NO sex drive, lost weight when I went gluten free, am 5'1" and weigh 103#.

Sometimes I am not sure what is bothering me....the thyroid, the celiac, jusst getting old.........the ibs. I have been tested for other autoimmune diseases and am negative, but my antithyroid antibodies are climbing which seems to suggest additional food allergies (I am also a vegatarian).

Have you had testing for hypothyroid? If you have, what are your levels. Sometimes people do better on the lower end of the scale.

  17. Thank you for your feedback. I had a food allergy test done somt time ago and did not use any of those foods for over 6 months and when I reintroduced them back into my system, made sure I do not overload on them.

I did have soy allergy and only eat a small amount now. I do not do any milk products, but do have some cheese on rice pizze. Sometimes it feels like all I could safely eat would be AIR.

  18. Hi:

Haven't been here in awhile. Was diagnosed with Celiac July 2005, and have been gluten free since then. Also have IBS (since 1960's) and hypothyroid (1999), also a vegatarian. Have been doing really fine until about a week ago. Began to have stomach spasms and then that caused back spasms, and now it goes round and round. Have been to my DO and also a massage therapist who worked on my back yesterday and said how very tight it is. I try to stretch at work and not sit too long at the computer.

This kind of thing tends to happen when we make the transition into spring. I thought when I was diagnosed with the celiac and began to feel so much better with the diet, that ALL things were now okay. A little thrown back by this event.

Has anyone else experienced problems like this, any suggestions, thoughts???

I have begun a new exercise program with my physical therapist and have used a rebounder recently, but have been doing resistant training for a few months. She advised me to stop that and just do stretching exercises until this gets under control. It actually aches when I breathe, feels better with heat and naturally after a massage.

    I'm seeing my chiropracter tomorrow.

    Thanks for listening.

    Marty

  19. Before I was diagnosed I would get them several times a week. I thought it was from wearing higher heels for work. I wore lower heels and that did not help.

I was diagnosed July 2005 and have been gluten free. The foot/leg cramps have gotten better, but seem to more aggravated by tighter shoes or socks. In the summer when I wear mostly sandals, it does not happen as much.

I do believe it is tied in some way to the gluten, but I have been gluten free and still get them sometimes, but not quite as bad. Sure I have other food allergies too.

Good to hear it's not just me.

    Marty

  20. Just came upon this and it seems to have been around for quite awhile. Very interesting subject.

Both my Mom and my Dad were Romanian. Both sets of Grandparents came over in early 1900's. I am second generation born here. My hair (before it turned grey) was brown and dark brown eyes, with light olive complextion. Both parents also brown haired and brown eyed. Not sure if my Mom (deceased 14 years) was celiac, but she did have a lot of gastro problems. My Dad, bless him, had no health problems at all. He died at the age of 94, when he was hit by a car.

Go figure. I've had bowel and stomach problems ever since I can remember. Diagnosed with Colitis when I was 17 and thereafter with IBS. Had bloodtest in 2005, diagnosed with celiac and have been gluten-free since July 2005. I am also hypothyroid (diagnosed in 1999) and a vegatarian. The diet is challenging at times, but I do feel so much better.

    Marty

  21. Sorry, got a little confused on trying to answer the message.

I've been very careful with regard to the food coming into the house. Even bought a separate toaster, and husband is eating same as I am. I read everything I buy, but then always did due to being a vegartarian and always concerned about what was "in" things.

My shampoo's check out as does my makeup and my medication. I only take Armour for my thyroid. When we go out I am quite vocal about what I can and cannot have (I usually call beforehand) and the places have been very accommodating.

I know that I need to give it time, but once you receive a diagnosis and you begin to make some changes, I believe your thought process begins with "okay, I should feel better now".....I know that is not logical, more hopeful.

I guess being new to this problem, just need some guidance and appreciate your feedback.

As far as the colitis...........after the bout in '59, was thereafter diagnosed with IBS. Still have rumblings and gas...........IBS or celiac??? Who knows. I will try to take it day by day and post questions here for needed help.

    Thanks.

    Marty

  22. Marty-

First off, 3 weeks is still very new to the diet.  Most people are on it for several months before they start noticing real improvement.  However, some notice things before that time.  It depends on the person.  But since you have been suffering for a long time, you'll probably need to be patient and give it some time.

Second, are you sure you are completely gluten-free?  Most of us thought we were at first and found other thing we hadn't thought of.  It can get complicated!  Is all your food gluten-free--including meats, beverages, spices, condiments etc.  What about cooking utensils etc--is there a risk of cross contamination in your home?  Do you eat out very often?  And have you cked your products, any kind of lotions, soaps etc.  or makeup (can't tell if you are a man or woman--sorry !)  :)

One other thought, I would encourage you to keep a food/activity journal.  Perhaps there is a link to why you feel a bit better in the evening.  Do you think there is some anxiety involved in the 'jittery' feeling you get?  Perhaps that is something else you should evaluate.

I had an IBS diagnosis years ago too.  Many find their "IBS" symptoms were really Celiac and disappear, some find that a few IBS type symptoms linger.  There is recent thread going on about Hashi's here--you could do a search for it if interested.

Something for you to keep in mind, with colitis (do you "technically" still have that as well as Celiac?), is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  Several here have had great success with it.  There is a thread discussing it here as well.  Its also called the SCD diet.

I hope I didn't ask too many questions !  :D  Just trying to help you think of things that may not have crossed your mind.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

  23. Diagnosed in '59 with colitis. Then in the '60's, 70's, 80's, etc. just plan old IBS.

Have recently been diagnosed with celiac. Not sure how long that has been going on. But still have the IBS. Can tell because when I get nervous, I still have to run to the bathroom. I also have Hashi's thyroid and am a vegatarian, which has made eating, especially out, very interesting.

Anyone have any suggestions. I thought that maybe when I went on the gluten free diet that would begin to settle some things down and am not sure how long that takes. Have been gluten free about 3 weeks.

Stomach still feels nervous and jittery, better in the evening.

    Thanks.

    Marty
