  1. I've had celiac my whole life but I was diagnosed just a week ago. I didn't always feel bad when I ate gluten but I had more than my fair share of stomach aches and bloating, migraines and joint pain. With 20/20 hindsight I can see that overall I felt most poorly while eating a lot of gluten, but there were days and weeks when I felt fine. I would...
  2. I have friends who are non-celiacs who have essentially gluten-free homes just to improve their health. Their kids grew up with it so it's no big deal for them. My kids, on the other hand, have eaten like a typical Canadian for 9, 7 or 5 years so it will be harder to switch them over to a healthier gluten-free diet... which I am slowly planning on doing...
  3. Thanks RoxieB and Skylark! I'll make a note of those.
  4. I too am more tired this first week gluten-free. I've been falling asleep on the couch at least an hour earlier than normal, and have to set the alarm to wake up after 8+ hours of sleep. ... And the headaches! I'm looking forward to that being gone. Grumpy too... don't tel my husband I admitted that though! LOL Wheat Belly is another really...
  5. Congratulations on a great start to fixing an unhealthy situation. I hope you continue to feel better.
  6. Ah, crappy. *hug*
  7. Wow! Great lists! I'm leaving a copy in my car for my next shopping trip. Thank you.
  8. This sounds a bit like one of my friends who "welcomed me to thier world". She was telling me how she had eaten something with gluten the other day, and because she has it so infrequently now, how it caused her knuckle on her little finger to get sore and swell for a day... I nodded as politely and sympathetically as I could. LOL She's a bit of a princess...
  9. I was very recently diagnosed with celiac after, I am sure, a lifetime of having it. I want to get my boys accurately tested for celiac as well and I would love some advice as to what to check for. I was diagnosed with IgA tTg at greater than 200(reference range 0-20) and positive EMA; I chose not to do a biopsy and have not yet checked my mineral and...
  10. *hug* I'm sorry you're numbers were not quite what you expected. I can imagine that would be disappointing (I'm new to the diet still). I hope you find the source of your exposures. Best wishes.
  11. I have a bunch of friends who are EXTREMELY food aware and really splurge with only organic foods (which is great but expensive) so I had almost no sympathies from any friends. I had quite a few "At least there's lots you can still eat" to even a "welcome to our world" from a friend who has chosen to eat this way, and can afford to without batting an eye...
  12. I've been gluten-free for just over a week and I'm down about 4lbs. Kind of a nice bonus. If I stopped eating a bowl of popcorn in the evenings, I'd probably be down even more. I'll cut the popcorn to once a week and see if I can't take advantage of my damaged gut to lose a few pounds before it heals and it becomes harder to lose weight... like...
  13. I took my boys to a kiddie birthday party today, and it was the first time that I felt like I'm missing something. They had a wonderful cheesecake, various bowls of chips (no idea of the brands), a few other snacks, and a plate of veggies. I ate a few carrot sticks. It wasn't awful passing up on homemade cheesecake... okay, yes it was awful but it was...

    Acceptance Is Coming

Thanks Karen. My brand (and it was a bit cheap LOL) had smoke flavour and I know that can be bad with... Ah, I think it's hydrolyzed wheat protein... gotta look into it more, or spend more money. ;P
  15. Excellent.
  16. I'm just a few days further into my diagnosis than you. A few days ago, I was quite blocked up for a couple of days but it passed now. C is something I've always had though. From what I understand, many people go through withdrawl from gluten for a couple of weeks so we could have a few more rocky days ahead of us... For me it's the headache in it...
  17. IgA tTg is is what causes a cliac's body to attack itself when it is exposed to gluen; it's pretty specific to celiac. About 95% specific I believe, which means that out of 100 positive tTg test, about 95 would be celiac and the rest would be something else. EMA is another test and it is virtually 100% specific to celiac... Did they test that too? I...
  18. Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet is a good book for advice on how to prepare and pack healthy food so you don't slip back to bad habits. It's not a gluten-free book, but it is REALLY low on grains and has lots of healthy whole food ideas. I hope your other food intolerances calm down once your body heals.
  19. I imagine that I'll just be working with my family doctor (I was only diagnosed a week ago) on this unless I have something that he or I can't figure out. Like you, I've had this for decades without realizing it, and my ttg and EMA tests back up that there's plenty of damage done, so I'm not bothering with an endo since it doesn't help me and I have no doubt...
  20. I know this is even more of a hassle, but I find bringing extra food to share makes a slightly different diet less of an issue. I've been doing that for my "picky eating" kids for years. People are less likely to notice their pickiness when they are eating something that everyone else is. Best wishes.
  21. I don't think it would affect it that quickly but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can comment. I would guess that you really are negative for celiac, but that doesn't mean you aren't intolerant or sensitive to gluten.
  22. I hear you. We're finishing off testing and then I'm easing them over into it with the assumption that even if his tests were negative (they are so far), that he is a latent celiac. He doesn't have discomfort or many symptoms so I'm going to take my time doing this so it's not a bad thing. Find recipes they like, ease them into it and then remove the last...
