ARCHIVED 1 Wk. Gluten-Free: Lack Of Appetite Normal?
nvsmom replied to heathenly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL My appetite is less off gluten that it was prior to diagnosis. I have been mostly gluten-free for for a month (with a few accidents) and I find I'm not nearly a hungry as I was before. I used to get the shakes evry couple of hours if I didn't eat and it was hard to feel full. Now I actually forget to eat for 4 or so hours and I still feel fine... -
ARCHIVED First Time In Restaurant Since Diagnosis
nvsmom posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went out to eat for the first time since being diagnosed celiac a month ago. I thought I did everything right. I googled gluten-free restaurant options first, checked out the menus in advance, and picked a restaurant that has a well respected menu... I decided on Halo (in Calgary). It didn't go well. I talked with the waiter and let him know I couldn... -
ARCHIVED Is It Easy To Make The Connection?
nvsmom replied to Nen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the 93% accuracy refers to the fact that it is 93% specific to celiac... The other positive 7% have something else. There is still a 30% chance of a false negative like the lab tests; there's just not much of a chance of a false positive. -
ARCHIVED How Long Until Ttg Down, When Gluten-Light?
nvsmom replied to Mom-of-Two's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's hard dealing with our kids' possible illnesses. hugs If you really want the tests, I would delay a couple of weeks and gluten up in that time. I was eating fairly gluten-lite and then switched to lots of cinnamon buns (mmmm) for about 3 weeks before my test and it was very positive. Did the doctors have an alternative explanation for her high... -
I get a stomach ache 10-30 minutes later and then get bloated for a few days. I'm still too new to being gluten-free to know how my migraines, fatigue, and aches and pains are affected by gluten. I'm guessing I'll feel healthy in 4 to 8 months.... cuious how that will feel different or if it even will feel different at all. LOL

ARCHIVED Home Test Kit
nvsmom replied to Giambi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know what you mean. LOL I did the Biocard test about 2 months ago. It's an accurate test. I upped my gluten for about 2 weeks prior to the test (I was eating less gluten than the average person) with extra cinnamon buns and such. I think the test says you should be having at least 1-4 slices of bread a day (at least 2 a day was recommended)for a... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Test Results
nvsmom replied to mmarksbury's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The following quote is from the Mayo website below: Open Original Shared Link The finding of tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgG antibodies may indicate a diagnosis of celiac disease, particularly in individuals who are IgA deficient. For individuals with moderately to strongly positive results, a diagnosis of celiac disease is possible and the patient... -
ARCHIVED Do Those With Only Gluten Sensitivity Have To Stop All Gluten ?
nvsmom replied to medicalenigma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am a celiac and I've been gluten free for one month and I have found the withdrawl gave me an overall feeling of poor health. I have less energy than normal; it's coming back now but there was a good 10 days when blinking seemed like a big effort. I have also been very cranky and off... I'm normally quite a cheerful person but I'm snappy. And the headache... -
ARCHIVED Awaiting Results!
nvsmom replied to ReneeMartin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had positive ttg IgA and EMA tests. Together they can only indicate celiac disease... actually, apart they almost assure it is too. lol Anyway, my doctor didn't want to pursue the biopsy because, frankly, there was no point. I can understand requesting a biopsy if you need to be sure it's celiac IF you end up with (false) negative blood tests, which... -

ARCHIVED Strongly Suspecting Celiac. Does This Symptom Rule It Out?
nvsmom replied to sosickofbeingsick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A large number of untreated celiacs are lactose intolerant because the lactase our bodies need to digest milk's lactose is created in the duodenum where the intestinal damage has occurred so we can't make it. Mucusy stools could indicate a problem with lactose. While you are pursuing celiac testing (and eating gluten) you might want to consider cutting... -
ARCHIVED I Look Pregnant!
nvsmom replied to patti-ann's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm right there with you too. I'm 38 and have also had this my entire life, and my doctors never figured it out...To be honest, after having my symptoms dismissed as a child, I stopped complaining about it; what was the point, right? I just found out that I have it on both sides of the family, and one of the cases was known for over 20 years. It's a shame... -
ARCHIVED Blood Work Results Timeline
nvsmom replied to Songbirdy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As I understand it, going gluten-free for a few weeks can affect your biopsy results. If you want the biopsy, you should probably switch back to gluten ASAP. If you are not interested in the biopsy, then stay gluten-free. I had positive blood tests results so I felt no need to have the scope done since I already knew I had celiac (positive EMA can only... -
Sheesh. Hope you don't get ill.

ARCHIVED gluten-free Stoes Or Restaurants In Parksville Or Tofino On Vancouver Island,bc
nvsmom posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm still in my first month as a celiac, and I was wondering if anyone has advice on gluten-free places to shop or eat in Parksville or Tofino? I'll be traveling there in a few weeks and I am super nervous about eating out and finding products I need. Any advice or wisdom of the area would be helpful. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Gaining Weight And Growth
nvsmom replied to jcollie800's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There is a recent thread in the CopingWith forum. Someone discuses how they have grown over an inch in just the past few months after going gluten-free. here is the link. Have you had your vitamin levels checked recently? There is a chance that your duodenum has not healed if you were only "relatively gluten free". It can take weeks to heal after... -

ARCHIVED Hip/low Back Pain
nvsmom replied to silk's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you had it before going gluten-free, I would assume that you are somehow being glutened. Perhaps go through your old brands to check if anything has changed, or consider if you are exposing yourself to cc through new people or places that do not keep wheat grains away from gluten-free food, utensils or other equipment. I hope your joints are feeling... -
ARCHIVED Do I Have A Closing Window Of Opportunity To Lose Weight?
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ah, okay... that makes sense to me! That could explain milk sensitivity and why gluten-free tortilla chips gave me a stomachache. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Is It Easy To Make The Connection?
nvsmom replied to Nen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I suspected celiac for a couple of years before I finally got tested. I'm one of those people who avoids doctors and believes in "toughing it out"... I now know that wasn't too smart on my part. Anyway, I've had it my whole life and I too had periods where I felt worse or better. My symptoms were never debilitating. I played varsity sports (with stomach... -
ARCHIVED Re-Glutening For Blood Test
nvsmom replied to merkia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the minimum time for a gluten challenge is 6 weeks but, from what I understand, that's not enough for everyone. Many 2 year olds have negative ttg tests because they've not been alive long enough to accumulate enough damage in their duodenum for it to register on the blood tests. I would do gluten longer if you want to test or just continue to... -
ARCHIVED At My Witts End!
nvsmom replied to ReneeMartin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HUGS Oh yes, that sounds like many of us around here... even the sighing for me. I suppose that's good and bad news all rolled into one, eh? MitziG gave you great info and advice. I would like to add that you might want to request your doctor check your vitamin levels when you have the other blood tests done. Because over a quarter of celiacs have... -
I'm starting to feel better. Yeah! I think withdrawl was worse for me that how I would feel after a gluten fest. It was no fun at all. My headaches are pretty much gone and I don't feel exhausted anymore; that's probably why I'm not quite as grumpy now. I have glutened myself already. I had an Estrella Damm Daura beer. It said gluten-free so I didn...

That happened to me too after about a week! I'm usually hungry all the time and my tummy rumbles; now I can go 3-4 before I get hungry (I'm almost a month gluten-free). ...I hope we're normal. LOL

ARCHIVED Do I Have A Closing Window Of Opportunity To Lose Weight?
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's good for me to hear that you haven't regained any lost weight after a whole year gluten-free. Yeah! I should be okay avoiding replacement foods except on special occasions like birthdays; as long as it's not in the house, I'm good. LOL I did go on a bit of a gluten-free binge trying some of the prepackaged foods after I was diagnosed, but my appetite...
