ARCHIVED Lightbulb Moment
nvsmom replied to Scunner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck on your tests! You seem to be approaching this from a very healthy angle so I have no doubts you'll manage wonderfully on a gluten-free diet. I hope you feel well soon. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Opinions
nvsmom replied to Eclara's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The others have given you really good advice. You need to be totally gluten-free, and not just gluten-lite. The last time I had gluten it was a cc (cross contamination) issue, and although the amount I had must have been miniscule I had stomach pain, was bloated for well over a week, had a migraine for days, and then just felt "off" for a couple of weeks... -
ARCHIVED My Symptoms And Diet Test
nvsmom replied to jjohn78's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That happens (happened) to me a few times a year. I got hypogycemic symptoms if I did not eat every two hours or so and always get light headed if I stand too fast. If I am sick or my body has a shock (like a sudden pain) I have passed out, or got very close where you see black but are still aware. I've been undiagnosed celiac for a long time, and it... -
ARCHIVED Biocard Results
nvsmom replied to Lifenthefastlane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It looks negative. I wonder how good it is at catching all celiacs? I've seen it said many times that about a quarter of all celiacs have false negative tests, that probably applies to the ttg IgA Biocard test too. There is a slim chance that you could still have it. It's a good thing you are going gluten-free anyways. I also did the Biocard test and... -
ARCHIVED Intestinal Pain Radiating/referred Pain To Back Pain?
nvsmom replied to ChristianGrey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have a bad back with bulging discs and a some paralysis where a disc burst and pinched off a nerve. I've had a bunch of lower back and sciatic pain. During pms, my back will get sore, and if I get too backed up with C, I can get pain too...It doesn't sound like what you describe. Good luck, I hope it resolves soon. -
Steroids seem to suck fat onto you. I remember gaining a few pounds and getting a round face, after a few months on prednisone. If I remember correctly, the weight didn't fall off after stopping the steroids either. It was fat and I had to lose it by cutting calories or increasing caloric demand with exercise. You might just need a bit more time for...

ARCHIVED My Son's Health Continues To Decline!
nvsmom replied to CeliacDad55's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your poor guy. Best wishes to him and your family. I was recently diagnosed Hashimoto's, and in my flurry of resultant research, I've come to think it's underdiagnosed. Ideally you want a TSH between 0.5 and about 2.0 although "normal ranges can be as wide as 0.2-6.0. A marginally high TSH, along with higher thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) could... -
ARCHIVED Question About Test Results.......
nvsmom replied to rami's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's great that your kids are nagative for celiac. As others said, they could develop it later in their lives since the autoimmune diseases usually run in families, then again they may never get it. Be on the lookout for symptoms since many young kids can test negatively for celiac even if they have it. And retest every few years to be safe, or... -
ARCHIVED Celiac In A 16 Month Old Baby
nvsmom replied to Harry's dad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My stomach aches and pain stopped after about a week but my symptoms presented differently than your son's did. From what I've seen in other posts, if your child will eat, they often start putting on a bit of weight within a month or two. Good luck and best wishes. I hope your little guy feels better soon. -
ARCHIVED Kirkland Jelly Bellies
nvsmom replied to koolkat222's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks goodness! Jelly Bellies are my favourite candy and I have put off looking at the label (and buying them) because I was afraid I'd see wheat listed. ... It's probably better if I don't buy the Costco sized portion anyways! -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Only?
nvsmom replied to Lifenthefastlane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. Biopsies are not as commonly used as they used to be. Many doctors don't deem them as a necessary step in the diagnostic process. In fact my doctor, who I don't consider to be an overly progressive kind of guy, diagnosed me as celiac with positive blood tests. I think biopsies are helpful for those who have questionable (or surprisingly... -
Congratulations! My mom was shocked how wonderful having grandchildren is. She says she loves them like her own children but has the benefit of having to do less work for them. LOL Although autoimmune diseseases are more commonly found to run in families, it's not a sure thing. On my mother's side, I have a cousin with celiac and another with RA...

ARCHIVED Researching And Trying To Connect The Dots
nvsmom replied to Danny66's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ditto what the other said. A lot of that is me too. I can relate to your hand pain...annoying! I also wanted to suggest thyroid testing. Iis more common in women, but with your sibling history, hypothyroidism could cause many symptoms along with extreme fatigue. Many with celiac are hypothyroid too. Best wishes. -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like A Simple Gluten Intolerance Or Something More?
nvsmom replied to Melina89's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
ugh, I feel for you. 6 weeks is a long time, I hope it's not too bad for you. From what I've read NCGI people have pretty much the same symptoms as celiacs except they don't have the intestinal damage. Either way, it's not good. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take?
nvsmom replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Rosetapper gave you great advice. Before I was diagnosed I was taking a huge amount of vitamins and supplements because of my lack of energy. I had all those vitamin tests done, and it turns out my thyroid isn't working well. as a result, my energy isn't up yet since my meds aren't spot on yet but my gut feels much much better. Hope you feel well soon... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Weight Loss
nvsmom replied to gottarun96's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I lost almost 15 lbs in my first two months gluten-free, and that's with eating icecream or popcorn every night. I'm guessing that about 5lbs of that was the bloating but I have no way to know for sure. My appetite has dropped off, so I'm sure I'm eating less but I don't feel like I am going without. Poeple who weren't absorbing well often find... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer Estrella Daura
nvsmom replied to Meatballman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I did that too! And up here in Canada it is labelled at gluten-free to 3ppm! -
ARCHIVED Is This Celiac?
nvsmom replied to bobtom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would pursue the blood tests that Lisa (Gottaski) sugests. I was diagnosed after a positive EMA and ttg IgA tests; I chose to skip the biopsy since EMA indicates damage is being done to the intestine, as does ttg IgA. I too remember those tummy aches as a kid (I was a tall, slim, athletic otherwise healthy kid too). That's great that your sone will... -
ARCHIVED Would Like Your Opinions
nvsmom replied to Mommyof4beans's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most cases of hypothyroidism are caused by Hashimoto's (as far as I have learned). There are a few other causes like cancer, pregnancy/post-partum hormones and insufficient diet, but hashi's is the main cause for hypo. My doc hasn't actually said I have Hashi's (said it was hard to diagnose it definitively) but I'm calling it that since I have another... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Lots Of Questions ;)
nvsmom replied to yankeegirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry to hear you've been so unwell. I hope going gluten-free helps you quickly since your symptoms do sound like celiac and dh. I've been gluten-free for two months and I've been glutened twice by miniscule amounts. One was from a gluten free menu in a restaurant (I have no idea what got me) and another was fro a "gluten-free" beer that was gluten... -
ARCHIVED Not What I Expected
nvsmom replied to ivy light's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck with your endoscopy on Tuesday! You don't have to be a great menu planner to eat well gluten-free, I find the key is just to make extra so you can always pack leftovers for lunches. LOL If you make eggs, make enough for two meals. Chilli is great to have in the freezer. Stuff like that. Oh, and I always carry a Lara bar in my bag in... -
ARCHIVED Would Like Your Opinions
nvsmom replied to Mommyof4beans's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would get tested befor going gluten-free if you are planning on being tested for celiac. Celiacs who go gluten-free for a time often need to eat gluten for months if the want an accurate celiac test, and many of us find our reactions to gluten get stronger and more unpleasant the longer we've been gluten-free. Many family doctors could order those... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Stunted Growth
nvsmom replied to gottarun96's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Girls often stop growing shortly after they get their periods; by shortly, I mean a year or two. I was an undiagnosed celiac for most of my life, and I stopped growing at age 12... luckily I was 5'8" by then but the basketball player in me always wonders if I could have been taller. My oldest son (9) is shorter than his brother (7), and although he tested... -
ARCHIVED Devastated, Angry, Frustrated...
nvsmom replied to Momma Bear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I too was recently diagnosed with celiac after a lifetime of discomfort, and I felt that bitterness that so much time was wasted. Knowing that I could have been healthier for decades, and that my other autoimmune diseases are linked or caused by this, was a hard pill to swallow. It's unfair, and I feel for you. I'm not a religous person, but I like to... -
ARCHIVED Blood Work And Biopsy
nvsmom replied to lin7604's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree with the others, a bpositive blood test means he is celiac. I recieved a positive blood test and the doctors didn't even bother with the endoscopy. I have celiac without a doubt. I've had it my entire life too. I remember some big stomach aches as a kid, but not everyday. I wasn't hugely symptomatic but I have got more symptoms as I aged. ...
