  1. I am speaking for my husband, who is a 20 year veteran of celiac diagnosis -after 15 years of mis-diagnosis. Prior to diagnosis there were days he could hardly climb a flight of stairs. Today I have to chug my vitamins just to keep up with him. He will be 70 in August and is the picture of health. He takes no medicine of any kind and is on the go every...
  2. I think what you are looking for is the crispy noodles for your Asian Salad. Grandma Ferndon website sells chow mein noodles that are gluten free
  3. Ditto on Namaste Chocolate Cake Mix. You'll find none better, It is a really rich and very dark chocolate cake. I don't think I've ever had a chocolate cake as good, gluten free or otherwise (I'm not the celiac) I totally agree about their Vanilla cake mix..not so good. BUT, I have developed a recipe to use it. Make the mix according to directions...
  4. Katydid here again...I just had to jump back in and share something about the little guy I mentioned above. His name is Dylan; and I had him and his parents over the other night for dinner to show them a quick and easy way to make very good gluten-free pizza, since that's one of his favorites. AND GUESS WHAT? His hair is already starting to grow back....
  5. Welcome LuLu - As I'm sure you've already determined, you will find a TON of good information here. Everyone is so friendly and eager to help; and they have a wealth of information. I see you are from West Des Moines. If you are not already familiar with it, I want to introduce you to our Des Moines support group. We meet every couple of months for...
  6. Thanks so much for the quick reply..I really appreciate it.
  7. Are Cheeto's gluten free? We are having gluten free company tonight.
  8. We always check the brand name out with the company. From what I understand, the mold growth on some are generated with breadcrumbs.
  9. I couldn't believe it when I saw your post about salivary gland issues. My husband, who has been celiac for 20 years gets a 'lock jaw' like syndrome. He goes to the doctor and they call it a salivary gland inflamation. They give him antibiotics and it goes away. I never dreamed it might be celiac related.
  10. Pie Crust is one ofthe easiest things I make now with this tried and true system. I do cheat a little though. I use one of those piecrust makers to roll it out. Its a round plasitc piece. The top and bottom zip together. My recipe is this: 2 1/4 cups gluten-free flour ( I just happen to use Betty Hagman's Featherlite but I think any would do...
  11. I firmly believe this is a definite possibility. In the very beginning- prior to diagnosis, my celiac husband had symptoms that "cycled". It might be 6 or 8 weeks between bouts. Obviously, as his celiac continued to worsen, the bouts occurred more frequent until finally they were constant. As a matter of fact, if you look at his doctor's records, they...
  12. TBHQ is an additive in a lot of products and is listed just like that on the label. Its official name is way too long to remember. You will find it most often in the cooking oils of restaurants. From what I understand, oils that contain it can cook at a much higher heat without burning; and this makes it faster cooking. That's great for restaurants,...
  13. Is it possible there was MSG in the chicken broth? My husband is celiac and gets similar reactions if he eats anything with MSG or TBHQ.
  14. Does anyone know if Fit and Active brand Turkey Meatballs (frozen) from Aldi's are gluten free? The meatballs allergan statement on the package only says contains milk and soy but I couldn't confirm gluten free as I can't find a way to email Aldis on there site and there is none for Fit and Active. I am trying to put together gluten free foods for...
  15. Wow -the timing on this question is perfect. Just last week a friend of mine put the mother of a newly diagnosed 10 year old boy in touch with me to see if I could help her get started on his gluten free diet. This little guy had no GI or any other celiac syptoms. As a matter of fact, the only thing that got him diagnosed was a bald spot on the top of...
  16. Our support group has a gluten free potluck every couple of months and we have terrific cooks. Here is a recipe from one for the most beautiful and delicous "pink" creations. PINK CLOUD ANGEL FOOD CAKE 1 Gluten-Free Pantry Angel Food Cake Mix 1
  17. Kinnikinnick Kinne-Toos - They taste exactly like an oreo, but they are kind of spendy.
  18. One of my cookbooks recommends just using a regular heating pad on low.
  19. Wow Mike - this sounds so much like my husband. He was diagnosed with Psoriasis many years (maybe 15) before the celiac was diagnosed. However, it apparently was the DH component of celiac rather than psoriasis, because when he went on the gluten free diet, it started to disappear. He had it on his knees, elbows, knuckles and buttocks. Everything but...
  20. For what its worth, my husband who has been celiac for 20 years, can eat all kinds of cheese and cottage cheese and eats a lot of both; but when it comes to milk and ice cream, he just can't tolerate them. I know it sounds strange, but both give him a tummy ache, bloating and burping.
  21. www.leggs.com has coupons for $1.00 off of Leggs products like pantyhose, etc.
  22. ok - here is the recipe for pizzelles 6 Eggs 1 Cup Butter 2 teaspoons vanilla or anise extract 4 cups gluten free flour blend 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon xanthan gum 1 1/2 cups sugar Beat eggs until smooth. Melt butter. Allow butter to cool briefly while you mix the sugar and vanilla or anise into the egg. Then add melted butter to...
  23. little c Sure I will post the recipe, but later this evening when I get home from work. kbabe The cost of pizzelle makers is all over the place. I have two- I gave $2.00 for one at a tag sale and $20 for the other one when it was on sale at Younkers. The last one is for mini pizzelles--they are only about 3" in diameter. I plan to use it to make...
  24. Yes - I use Anna's breads and in 20 years of cooking gluten free, I find it to be about the best bread mix I have ever used. I cook and bake a lot, so I'm not opposed baking from scratch; but for something as staple as bread, I always use Annas. Then I can save my gluten free culinary fun time for more exotic things. You can get Anna's from glutenevolution...
  25. I have a pizelle maker, which is like a waffle iron, but a makes thin, lacey, round product. These make terrific cones if you roll these around a cone shape while they are still warm. They crisp up in just a minute and then you can go on to the next one. When using for ice cream though I always dip the tips in melted chocolate and let set before filling...
