ARCHIVED Little Shooting Pain After Eating? Digestion?
megsybeth replied to adambryant's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had lower abdomen pain the first couple weeks after going gluten-free. I really didn't have GI issues to speak of before diagnosis. I think, though I don't know, the healing does cause some pains. Also, I think I became much more aware of my body in general because for years I was told that I didn't have symptoms. In my case the pains went away in two weeks... -
ARCHIVED Big Kitchen Clean, Am I Missing Anything?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well my skillet went to a happy home with a friend who lost everything to Hurricaine Irene a couple years ago. I've always hated reseasoning and remember my mom getting little rusty spots on it. So I guess it's just as well. Tupperware is something I hand't thought about too much. I do have a lot of glass which is fine, I guess, but I also have tons of... -
ARCHIVED Waiting For Results
megsybeth replied to AandGsmomma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would definitely report back here with her numbers because there are people on the board who know the tests in and out and can link you to research. Also, maybe look at Peter Green's book? Since you both have gluten issues, I'd take both of you gluten free and see what happens, after the testing of course. You can search this site for celiac knowledgeable... -
ARCHIVED Big Kitchen Clean, Am I Missing Anything?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
They're stainless steel so I think they're ok, but I got rid of my cast iron skillet. -
ARCHIVED A Request For Those Who Suffer From Gluten Ataxia
megsybeth replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ollie's Mom, I first became aware of my ataxia before I was diagnosed, when my son was diagnosed with special needs. I've always been clumsy, prone to dizzyness (low blood sugar was what I attributed it to), and just generally off in my motor abilities, like just a half second off from what others seem to be able to do. And when I started to see my son... -
ARCHIVED Big Kitchen Clean, Am I Missing Anything?
megsybeth posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten free for about a month, my 4yo about two weeks. Even when I was still giving my son gluten prior to his endo, I swapped all the gluten food out of the kitchen. But I feel like there is gluten hiding out in my kitchen. We're both so newly diagnosed with celiac that I think I didn't want to really think that I have to be so crazy about CC.... -
ARCHIVED Negative Dgp Igg And Negative Dgp Iga
megsybeth replied to MoMof2Boyz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
MoMof2Boyz, I would keep pushing until you get all the tests if not an endoscopy (I assume there's a reason they are testing). There are many others that know much better about these tests but I happen to have been reading up about DBP IGA because that's the only test my son tested positive on (and he's "low risk" genetically, exactly as low risk as I am... -
ARCHIVED Did Your Ped Gi Recommend Endoscopy And Colonoscopy?
megsybeth replied to Christine0125's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Christine, My son's four and I did both just because he had to be put under. Probably at your daughter's age it's more of a light sedation so I agree with you that I would just do upper. -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac Mom (On Gluten) And Under-Formed Palate?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks, Jebby. While I have you, maybe, can any of the antibodies related to celiac pass from mother to child through BF? I know gluten itself can't, at least according to my doctor, but if Mom has celiac and baby has celiac and baby gets the atnibodies through the breast milk, could it cause malabsorption? -
ARCHIVED Celiac Genetic Testing?
megsybeth replied to cdaviles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Mushroom, my son's GI, just two days ago, tried to put him on zantac! And then she said, "Well the only problem is that it might cause a little diarrhea.". He's underweight, he's four, he still wears some clothes that are sized 18 MONTHS, he's had diarrhea since August. He doesn't have any acid reflux signs but he does have a mother with celiac and a strong... -
ARCHIVED Who Examins Biopsy Slides?
megsybeth posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So at the end of November I finally get to take my 4yo down to UCSD to see a pediatric celiac specialist. His local GI doesn't really get the disease and I had her do an endoscopy and biopsies reluctantly because I knew she was convinced he had no celiac. But I would have had to keep my son on gluten, having constant diarrhea, exhausted for three months to... -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac Mom (On Gluten) And Under-Formed Palate?
megsybeth posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Kind of a long shot but I was wondering if anyone knew of a link between a mom who's celiac and getting gluten (undiagnosed in my case) and giving birth to a child without a fully formed palate? My son is 4 and doesn't have a cleft palate but after two years of speech therapy a new therapist just pointed out to me that his soft palate doesn't close fully... -
ARCHIVED Waiting For Results
megsybeth replied to AandGsmomma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
AandGsmomma, what does your instinct say? I know that's not scientific but, not to be too snarky, a lot of doctors these days aren't too scientific either . I just say this because starting this summer I KNEW my son had (has) celiac and shortly thereafter I KNEW I had it too. I was right on both. But the first blood test on my son came back "negative" as... -
ARCHIVED Loss Of Appetite After Going Gluten Free...
megsybeth replied to cdaviles's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think that is part of celiac. I always knew I ate a lot more than others without seeming to pack on weight. I thought I had a "fast" metabolism. I was terrified of putting on fifty pounds once I went off gluten and started to absorb but I think what feels like "no appetite" to us is actually normal appetite, meaning not constantly starving and shoving cookies... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Genetic Testing?
megsybeth replied to cdaviles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Cdaviles, Why are you gluten free in the first place? The genetic testing is useful to possibly rule out celiac (though some have celiac with atypical genes, it is very rare). But I think 1/3 of all people, with celiac or not, have those genes. Unfortunately the genetic testing can be misused. For example, my son's pediatric GI was very anti-celiac for... -
ARCHIVED Making Meatballs, Corn Meal Or Crumbled Millet Bread?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks, Adalaide. I have a vitamix but don't have the dry attachment, but a regular blender works? I don't feel like dragging out my cuisinart which is probably CCed now that I think of it (I'm new to this!). -
ARCHIVED Making Meatballs, Corn Meal Or Crumbled Millet Bread?
megsybeth posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, I'm making some meatballs and a recipe I found calls for either crumbled gluten-free bread or corn meal. I have both. Any opinion on which is better? Also, if I crumble the millet bread, should I toast it in the oven first? Doing it today so no time to dry it out. -
ARCHIVED Thoughts On My Son's Most Recent Labs?
megsybeth posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So I've posted quite a few times about my celiac diagnosis process and that of my son, who's four. But just for background, he's had failure to thrive, markedly small stature since he was one. I thought he was tested for celiac because it was discussed but looking back see all they did was stool testing for fats. In addition to slow growth, he has motor and... -
My motor issues have improved a lot in just a few weeks. The other day I was wearing shorts and I asked my husband if he noticed anything different. He looked down and immediately said, "There aren't any bruises on your legs"!

ARCHIVED Newly Self-Diagnosed - Get Tested! My Story...
megsybeth replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I decided to go gluten free because I'm breast feeding, after my blood tests were conclusive along with symptoms. I was surprised that the celiac specialist GI I saw for the first time Monday was not that concerned. She said someone with long-term celiac will usually have pretty lasting damage. She actually said there was no rush for me to decide about whether... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get Terrible Upper Stomach Pain?
megsybeth replied to asickdaddy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've had this off and on over the years before my diagnosis. It feels like glass is scraping the top of my abdomen. It's horrible, horrible pain. And I've had unmedicated child birth! -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests And False Negative Results
megsybeth replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think I read the 1-2% fasle negative statistic on the University of Chicago website but my general experience has not been that doctors test properly. I'd easily believe that half the doctors do the wrong tests or insufficient numbers of tests which would make this number a bit larger. My son was first flagged for celiac because of failure to thrive at... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Understand How My Son Tested - Three Times
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks, Cara. We'd already been pretty 100% gluten free at home since I went off and I took the baby off and was planning to take DS off after testing. My husband is really sweet and supportive. I told him that once my son is a little bit older we could probably bring regular bread back in the house, but right now he will just have too hard a time seeing... -
ARCHIVED Negative Tests.. But All The Symptoms?
megsybeth replied to lmc22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just feel like these tests have to improve. I had to keep my four year old on gluten in order to get his endoscopy and it's just barbaric. It's like if a doctor tells you, "I think there might be broken glass in your cereal. But don't stop eating it because I have to wait and see if your stomach gets cut up...Oh, and I'm really busy so keep eating the broken... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Understand How My Son Tested - Three Times
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So we're back and everything went well except for the poor GI and her team who had to deal with my unsuccessful home clean out and the nurse's two unsuccessful clean outs once we arrived. Well, you can imagine. Right before the procedure I handed the GI my lab results showing pretty clear positive on the full celiac panel. She was taken aback, "You have...
