ARCHIVED Teeth Without Roots?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a very small jaw, over-crowding and, at 4, my DS's dentist said "Oh yeah, he's going to need braces" because of the same issues.. It's really funny these things that come up. I've only been diagnosed with celiac for three months, which seems crazy, but it's been the first time in my life where my experience has started to seem real. Since childhood... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Without Roots?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the responses. He's recovering on the couch after a big morning at the dentist's. Poor little guy. Mizzo, the teeth don't have fully formed roots. He does have some adult teeth coming in in other places (back molars) but in this case, you can see on x rays that nothing is underneath and that the teeth are little squares. Also, the pediatric dentist... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Without Roots?
megsybeth posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Everyone, Have you had or heard of a child growing teeth without roots? I'm at the dentist now and she showed me xrays of my 4yo who had a major cavity. she saw that tooth and the one on the opposite side have no roots. She said the only time she's ever seen it is because of chemotherapy. DS has gluten intollerance (I still think celiac though tests havent... -
ARCHIVED Post Diagnosis Diet Confusion From Md
megsybeth replied to shellybean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think ultimately what we should all be going for is gluten free all the time. However, I do think that there's something to be said for assessing your own sensitivity because we are all so different. I've only been gluten free for about two months, my son one, so it's all very new for me. But personally I do eat out and eat some products that are "processed...- 8 replies

We're spending a night tomorrow in Basel, Switzerland and will have food with us (a kitchenette in the room) but was hoping there might be at least one good gluten free restaurant so we could have dinner or lunch out tomorrow. Anyone happen to know of one?

ARCHIVED Could Celiac Disease And Eosiniphilic Esophagitis Be Connected?
megsybeth replied to Daisychamp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Daisychamp, This is my first gluten free holidays so I'm by no means the expert but it really isn't something to fear. I have a great sugar cookie recipe that I found. I couldn't believe it tastes as good as my old wheat recipe, butter and crispy and good. Great for rolling cookies, Open Original Shared Link A lot of chocolates are fine. Nuts can be a...- 7 replies

ARCHIVED Help! Tips On Substituting Guar Gum For Xanthan Gum Needed
megsybeth posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So I packed all the supplies needed for a gluten free gingerbread house to bake and make while we're with inlaws in Germany but forgot xanthan gum. They don't sell it here. I have guar gum. Can I substitute it 1:1? Will it work the same? I'm planning to use this recipe Open Original Shared Link but am open to other suggestions, though I can't do more shopping... -
ARCHIVED Worried About Starvation
megsybeth replied to Wheresthebeef's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think a lot of people with Celiac are naturally drawn to sugary foods because they get into the blood stream so easily. I'm not saying this is a good idea for long-term and it's not great for energy levels/health, but if you are too thin, it's just getting all the calories in you can. I would try to drink a lot of calories. That's what I do with my under...- 20 replies

ARCHIVED Confusion About Gluten Intolerance
megsybeth replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sarah, Did you have the blood panel done? I didn't seem to see that. Knowing you want to get pregnant, I would personally want to be off gluten immediately. if you have a positive blood panel, I don't see the harm in going off. Good luck! -Megan -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
megsybeth replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi VeggieGal, Have you gone gluten free? I think your specialist sounds reasonable and experienced so there seems little risk of the endo being use to rule OUT celiac so I don't see why you shouldn't. I personally gave up gluten based on blood work. There wasn't a doubt to me that I would stay gluten free for life, especially after immediate improvement.... -
ARCHIVED What Age Did Everyone Begin To Have Symptoms?
megsybeth replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From the time I was born I was pale, skinny and had dark circles under my eyes. I guess around age four or five I had to have all my teeth capped because of "milk rot". At six I was ill for about a year: mono, tonsillitis, chicken pox. Just seemed to catch everything. After that, migraines, stomach isssues here and there, in early twenties abdominal pain... -
ARCHIVED If You React To Oats What's It Like?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks, everyone. I'll definitely avoid them. Cavernio, I think I've seen 5% a few places. I'm pretty sure Peter Green's book was one of them, the most recent edition. I guess it's not so important. If it's 80% and I have issues or it's 1% and I have issues, it's better to avoid. I'll also have my son avoid -
ARCHIVED Crazy Dizziness... Normal Or No?
megsybeth replied to PurpleMonkey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I hope your dizzyness goes away soon. I did have that before diagnosis for a few different reasons, but related to celiac. Low blood sugar at times, low blood pressure at times, anemia. I had ataxia but that mostly made me clumsy. Like banging my head on things, bruises all over. Your doctor is really wrong about that. About half of all celiacs are over-weight... -
ARCHIVED If You React To Oats What's It Like?
megsybeth posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know about 5% of celiacs can't have oats, even when not contaminated. I've had a couple cases of stomach cramping after eating oats but I don't want to be in that 5%! I've only been on the gluten-free diet for about a month so there have been lots of pains and issues here and there along the way. But last week I made some delicious raspberry oat bars and... -
ARCHIVED I Found This Very Interesting
megsybeth replied to Quincypp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think there are lots of health professionals who should be playing a part. I think I've had celiac for at least thirty years undiagnosed. I went to doctors over the years for many different pains and issues that might have been a flag. But I know that knowledge was really limited of the disease so I can sort of get over it. But what really kills me is... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Problems
megsybeth replied to thegirlsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had to have my teeth capped as a child, horrible silver metal caps. They said it was milk rot but I now think it was the celiac. My son, with celiac, has bad staining on his teeth and weakness from the time they've come in. Good luck for your daughter! -
ARCHIVED Hi I'm New Here!
megsybeth replied to Cderbogh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Cderbogh, You sound like you really have been suffering so I kind of hope you have celiac so you can get some help. I used to have Kaiser and I could look at my labs and my son's labs online at the patient site. Have you tried that? Makes it easier than the back and forth with nurses on the phone, faxes, etc.. I don't think Kaiser is any better or any... -
ARCHIVED Getting Back On The Potty During Recovery.
megsybeth posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My four-year-old has always been funny about the potty. Holding it for hours, literally, to avoid going pee or poop on the potty. We finally had him on track at just under four, this summer, when he started getting terrible diarrhea, almost daily. He never liked going on the potty for number two and with diarrhea, forget about it. He's been gluten free for... -
ARCHIVED Four Year Old's Blood Test "slightly Abnormal" For Celiac
megsybeth replied to javic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would probably see how soon you can get into a celiac specialist (look around here). If under two weeks, I'd keep your child on gluten, more than that and, personally, I'd probably take off. Is there a doubt in your mind about the diagnosis? If you are committed to the gluten-free diet that's the important thing. -
ARCHIVED Four Year Old's Blood Test "slightly Abnormal" For Celiac
megsybeth replied to javic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree to not let them delay. As for liking bread products, in our family I think it was definitely related to celiac to do with malabsorption. I never really liked wheat but I would binge on sugary foods, which often have wheat. And I was one of those people who could stay skinny while doing it. My son with celiac is the same way. He would actually dive... -
ARCHIVED Son With Weak Positive Score And High Immunoglobulin, What Does That Mean?
megsybeth replied to ldslara's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son and I were both recently diagnosed with Celiac and also both had high hemoglobins. I agree that you should have the full celiac panel done on everyone. Good luck to you. I know every situation is different but I was diagnosed and went gluten free a little over a month ago and it is really one of the best things that ever happened to me and for my son... -
ARCHIVED Need Moral Support And Advice For My 4Yo
megsybeth posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Everyone, I would love any advice from parents of young kids with celiac for the first few months. And I just need reassurance that I'm on the right track. The problem is I have a celiac specialist but my son hasn't seen one yet so I don't really have anyone to ask. His old GI, who did the testing and endoscopy doesn't believe he has celiac so I can't... -

ARCHIVED Post Birthing Tear
megsybeth replied to Celiac Ninja's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I honestly don't know the degree but it was a lot. I know a lot of doctors tell the degree. I had stitches and used a peri bottle. There's not really much to decide other than whether you want an episiotomy, which old school doctors still recommend.- 8 replies

ARCHIVED Big Kitchen Clean, Am I Missing Anything?
megsybeth replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone. This is a continuous work in progress I'm learning. But my husband has finally joined in and he was the one to think of our broom and dust bin. I don't eat off the floor but I cannot say the same for my children. I know it will take time but it feels really good to be making progress.
