  1. I just like to participate but my input is probably not so useful since I'm only a week and a half into gluten-free diet =). Did you have more energy? Yes, feel much more alert Lose weight? Too early to say Healthier skin and hair? Too early to say More regular bowel movements? No, going a lot more but I'm only one and a half weeks gluten...
  2. I've only been diagnosed for two weeks but I think I've had the disease for almost thirty years (that's when I had mono and constant throat infections at six, then migraines, "psychosomatic" stomach pain and vomitting, late menstruation....). I'm a naturally open person so everyone around me knows that I'm diagnosed with celiac but I find this brings up some...
  3. I guess it really depends what you consider processed foods. I would consider rice pasta processed and I like that. I usually make my own risotto but I used to like the risotto mixes before going gluten-free and I like nut crackers, pirates booty, vans frozen waffles (but mostly for my boys). I'm very new to baking but find if the recipe has some interesting...
  4. I have two wonderful boys I conceived before being diagnosed, though I believe I've had celiac since I was at least six. I think as long as she stays healthy and on the diet she should have every reason to expect to be able to conceive and have healthy babies. My first born is celiac, which is how I came to my diagnosis, but I am thinking about having a third...
  5. I believe my four-year-old has celiac and will be doing a gluten-free diet after his endoscopy in two weeks (I am recently diagnosed celiac via blood work but his blood work is inconclusive though symptoms are strong). For now he is still on gluten, which was good because we went to a gluten heavy Halloween picnic today. One thing I've always noticed...
  6. Hi TSPiggy, I'm a newbie too. I got diagnosed kind of by accident because my son most likely has it and as I started reading here and at other sites I realized how familiar many celiac symptoms sounded to me. So I emailed my primary and she ordered a celiac panel, which came back positive. I've had pain in my abdomen over the years but other than that...
  7. I'm curious about this too. My aunt and cousin both have lupus and we all have very similar genetic traits (though i don't know if that's a reason we would share these particular genes, just we look alike, sound alike, compared to the rest of the family). I've never had the typical rashes associated with lupus but I've always had back pain. I'm still processing...
  8. I know a lot of us with celiac and celiac/gluten averse kids also have children with special needs. Is there a board for us? I'd love to hear from people going through what I'm going through and especially from those who've been where I've been and seen a brighter side. I was diagnosed with celiac just two weeks ago and I believe my four-year-old has celiac...
  9. I'm very newly diagnosed and gluten-free and would love to find something to replace the cliff bars I used to have when I was in a rush or didn't have much appetite. I loved the peanut butter flavor but all of them are heavy in oats and the website does not list them in their gluten free products. Does anyone have a recipe for a hearty, protein rich peanut...
  10. Lisa, thanks for the article! And Mushroom, thanks for reminding me to stay positive. I need to remember that finding out at four would make my son really lucky compared to most of us.
  11. Thanks. Mushroom . I will tell her. Honestly I feel terrible about glutening my son but what reakky gets my goat is the money this mediocre GI will get from my insurance. But maybe I'm still a little crazy from my untreated celiac.
  12. My son has had very small stature since two months, also weak teeth enamel, poor concentration, anemia. Motor delays. He has seen a couple GIs who are not celiac experts but did some blood testing. He had negative bloodwork at 18mo, 2.5 years and a few weeks ago at four. BUT he also started having more pronounced GI issues: distended belly, diarrhea, constipation...
  13. I'm buying some utensils for my office. We've always used plain metal but they don't get washed and it's just gross. I wanted to order some compostable forks and spoons but they say "plant starch". Anyone know about these products and if they're safe? I'm looking at Eco Products brand and Eco Clout, both from Costco. Open Original Shared Link and...
  14. Hi Kryptonite, I'm glad you're on the mend. Did your doctor tell you about the link between Celiac and kidney issues? My 4 year old is in the midst of testing and can't get to the celiac specialist until Nov. 28. On the labs his regular GI sent me I saw low creatine levels and a high BUN ratio but she had written, "looks ok". She's terrible about calls...
  15. Thanks, Tarnalberry. I was not diagnosed or gluten-free then so I was on a regular diet. I'm just so thankful that both my boys were born at all now that I know about the risks of untreated celiac and pregnancy. when I was diagnosed earlier this month I did stop gluten based on blood work alone so that my 8mo wouldn't get it, just in case he is celiac or...
  16. I made this corn bread stuffing from Martha Stewart last year and it was great. I wasn't even diagnosed Celiac at the time. Open Original Shared Link And maybe you should slip some laxatives into your husband's morning coffee to allow him to be more empathetic!
  17. I've been wondering about this too. My son has pretty bad motor delays and I've always been very clumsy, in addition to forgetful and flaky before my diagnosis. I know in young children fat is essential to the developing brain. So I do think the malabsorption of fats could play into it. I think the brain needs fats on an ongoing basis, so it might just shut...
  18. I've recently been diagnosed with celiac and believe my son will be soon. Doctors first tested him for celiac (blood test) at around 18 months because of failure to thrive. But his weight and height dropped markedly at two months. He didn't have solids until four months and then only a little fruit and rice cereal. Is it possible that my milk, being celiac...
  19. I think this is really interesting and makes me kind of glad I had two births before my diagnosis, ElseB! But I'd like to throw another perspective out there. I do think part of the rise in autism rates has to do with some level of over-diagnosis. My son was diagnosed at 2 and a half with ASD by a Developmental Ped who believed in over-diagnosing so as not...
  20. Ok, the ground flax seed might explain something! I'm very new to gluten-free eating and cooking (three days new) and this morning I was experimenting with pancakes. We like unleavened pancakes (like thicker crepes) so I was experimenting with different flours. I'd picked up some ground flax meal because I thought it would be a healthy, crunchy way to coat...
  21. Thank you! Maybe I'll try again. I have my boys scheduled down in San Diego with someone from the UCSD Celiac center so I think they should be in good hands. I just want to get them in as soon as possible. Maybe I'll just nag the schedulers at both places every day for a week and see whether I get an appointment or banned from the practice. =)
  22. I have a four-year-old recently diagnosed with Celiac and I'm diagnosed too. I can't really find any playgroups in my immediate area and was thinking about starting a Meetup group. Has anyone tried this? I would love to have maybe monthly playdates or picnics with families. I think I could get more people if I made it a general food sensitivity group but...
  23. Good luck to you. I do think it's a delicate balance and frankly depends a lot on age. I had two healthy pregnancies with undiagnosed Celiac. Fortunately both boys were full term and healthy. But my first did drop markedly in size after two months (I exclusively breast fed) and I think it's because of both of our celiac. But I had a hard time getting pregnant...
  24. ^^sorry, meant to say, I bet what I'm going through is common and it makes me feel sad and frustrated for all the people out there now, when doctors really should know better, who are being shushed and ignored.
  25. I'm newly diagnosed, new to the diet and going through the process of looking back over the years and going "Aha!", when I think of how long celiac has been affecting me. I'm 35 and I can't blame the doctors from my childhood in a smaller town in the Midwest for not recognizing my celiac. But what makes me feel so hurt and angry is how long I've been taught...
