Okay, every single day, after I eat cookies, a granola bar, pasta, pizza, (I'm on the gluten challenge), I get the WORST GAS EVER! And it lingers!
I'm at work and I have to keep running to the bathroom just to let it out in a stall!
Does anyone else get this RIGHT AFTER eating gluten?
This is horrible! My fiance could barley walk into the bedroom a couple of nights ago!
If this isn't a sign of SOMETHING, I don't know what to say anymore!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Lucky you! I don't have to eat gluten for gas!!! Good thing I'm in my own office in the back of the building (but it is right next to the kitchen...)

Ha Ha
I thought the same thing last night!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Same here. Looks like next week's episode is about AIDS. I'll watch it just to get to the previews.

This may have been posted before i don't kknow, I haven't been a regular for a long time. But tonite my husband called me from wal mart to tell me that their own soy sauce appeared to have gluten-free ingredients. When he turned the bottle over it actually says GLUTEN-FREE!!!
Just thought I'd share this in case ya'all didn't know!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thanks for the info. I love it when a company has either gluten free or the allergens listed. My eyes get so tired of reading tiny print on label after label after label..... (for those in the right area, Kroger's soy is also gluten free)

I've been watching "House" looking for the celiac disease Show. Do you think it might be on tonight? The previews from last week showed a bicyclist racing, falling, and something about his system(s) shutting down or dying. Do you think that might be the one??

hi all
my gastro doc told me to eat plenty of plain yogart as this is good for the intestines, not the fruit ones as they full of sugar. what i need help with is sour cream the same as plain yogart or is it made a different way. i cant find anything on the cartons to see how its produce does anyone know thanks
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yougurt is made from a good bacteria that is helpful to your gut. Sour cream isn't.
That's why yougurt is often recommended.

Hi! I'm new here, not celiac disease (had a negative blood test), but definitely gluten-sensitive. (My main symptom is that I break out in a rash on my hands and face.)
My husband has been generally supportive, but the following issue has come up: for Thanksgiving, he insists that stuffing MUST be cooked inside the turkey, and he's NOT interested in trying any type of gluten-free stuffing. My concern, obviously, is contamination - if we cook stuffing inside the turkey, will it be safe for me to eat the outside part of the turkey? He feels that since they're not touching each other, I'm being ridiculous to worry about this. Am I?

I've read on other posts that if the turkey is stuffed, it's off limits to those with gluten issues. How bout roasting a turkey breast for yourself?

My girls are still too young to do communion, but when we do I will provide my own wafers (link above) I have found that most people are willing to accomodate them in other areas, as long as they understand the risk of not doing so, and have info as to what they can do to help.
I would print out some info on your son's condition and take it to your minister, he should be willing to help your son out.
I hope everything goes well for you.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Go to www.conceptionabbey.org - the nuns make a wafer that is okay'ed by the Church and is considered gluten-free!. Hope that helps.

yea!
I'm so glad that more people are learning about celiac disease. Our local grocery store (Superstore) is actually offering gluten free cooking classes once a month. I haven't gone yet becasue I have to work on the nights they offer them, but I am so impressed!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes, in this case mainstream is good! (don't worry, I'll never tune out the drummer that I march to). I was so very very surprised to find a small shelf of gluten-free items in my local grocery store. We're a small town, and the chain only has four stores or so in the state of Missouri!!!!!! YEAH!

Just saw this...
The liver and yeast are...
Liver Powder
and
Brewer's Yeast
Thanks in advance.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Brewer's yeast is the culprit, I bet. It's a by-product of beer making
. I use Spring valley products too, some of them have gluten, some don't. (had to donate two bottles to my dd two weeks ago)

Any good pie crusts for use with a pumpkin pie that might be like the usual pie crust?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I made the most astounding pie crust Saturday. The original recipe is:
2 c flour
1 tsp salt
(I add 1 to 3 tsp sugar)
1 cup crisco
1 tbl vinegar
1/3 to 2/3 c milk
I substituted a mix of gluten-free flours (soy, rice, potato starch, tapioca. Whatever) and 1 tsp guar gum.
I cut the crisco to 2/3 c.
Kept the vinegar, but added the milk very sparingly since the flours don't act like wheat flour. I didn't chill it, but it handled pretty much the same. I'm going to chill it next time though. And I figured out any pie crust dough that doesn't really work out, I could bake and crumble to use as graham cracker crumbs. Just add some brown sugar and it would be a good substitute when making a graham cracker crust. Even my husband and nieces approved.

It's too bad that according to the Catholic church, your standing with God depends on whether you participate in certain ordinances. I don't want to get into a debate on religion, but there is something very wrong with that. Communion is a symbol of the sacrifice Christ made to set us free from man made regulations and laws. The Jews had a million rules to follow in order to be in good standing with God, but when Christ came, He fulfilled all of those laws, and it is only by His grace that we can be reconciled to Him. Not through baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, etc.
God loves celiacs just as much as those who can eat gluten. He made our bodies, and He certainly does not want us damaging them in the process of "honoring" Him. We try to put God in a box, but we forget that He is not bound by the laws of nature, and He is much bigger than any controversy over "Holy bread".
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I love your response. Jesus was very angry at the Pharisees who worshipped their rules instead of praising God for what he had done for them. Dogma, wonderful thing that it is. There's a joke (a sad commentary really) that goes something like this:
The devil was asked if he was ever scared or worried when revivals got going and lots of people began to come to the Lord. He said "Nah, I just have them organize into churches". Anyhow, my story (Lutheran) is that I didn't take communion for quite a few years because of the wafer (it tasted and felt like styrofoam. I mean, how much gluten could have been in that? Enough obviously) and the pastor became concerned. He said I could just get the wine. But then he went back into the Army as a chaplain (he had a great repore with younger people) and our current pastor said I had to take the host too. So now I give him a fragment of a rice cracker (can't get the whole thing down before the wine comes around - in individual communion cups) so it can get blessed.

Hi all,
I was doing so well and I hadn't been glutened for ~ 2 weeks. But, last night I made chilli and now I am not feeling so well (tired and D).
So, though these products are on a gluten-free list I have and I don't remember problems with them before, thought I would run them by you all......Anyone had problems with these? :
Bush's canned pinto beans
McCormick's gourmet chilli powder
McCormick's black pepper
Del Monte tomatoes - plain, chopped, canned
McCormick's garlic salt
A couple other things like steak and salt in there that shouldn't be a problem. Who knows, maybe I just can't handle spicy foods right now until I have healed more.
Your help is appreciated. Thanks!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think I would put it down to the combination. We had chili a few nights ago (my husband thinks he's still cooking in the restaurant so we had more than a gallon of the stuff) with just about the same ingredients as you did. I'm bloated still. Probably the beans. I wonder if the combination of celiac disease and age makes things a little harder to handle (goodness, did I say AGE?
) I lament at times that when I was in h.s. I had a cast iron stomach. Not any more!

Which brand of Cream of mushroom is gluten-free? Is Cream of mushroom easy to make homemade with, I guess, corn starch?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've made cream soup with cornstarch - couldn't tell the difference since it was used with tomato sauce for smothered swiss steak.

Vydor is right, the symptoms can change, which makes it even harder for drs to dx from symptoms. Even though I've been gluten-free for 9 yrs, my reactions to accidental glutening are different than they used to be. The D is gone, but the fatigue and irritablity live on. Good question though

On days er, nights that I'm having problems with sleep, I use plain ole antihistimines. Benadryl (or generic) knock me right out. It won't address all of your other issues, but you may get some sleep. And you know what they say about colds - if you medicated yourself, it'll last seven days. If you don't do anything, the cold will last a week.

Deb is right - take yourself back down to simple basics. Your intestines have been damaged and it takes time to heal. Think baby - easily digested foods -but NO GLUTEN. And you'll probably have to eliminate dairy for awhile. The part of the intestines that are damaged from gluten is also the part that makes lactase to digest milk products. As you heal, you'll get the lactase making parts working again. But healing takes time, so in the mean time, simple foods. Most people use mashed potatoes when glutened until the tummy problem is gone. And life w/o bread products? It can be done. There are bad, tolerable and excellent products out there. And after awhile, you'll learn to associated regular gluten containing items with poison, after all that's what it is to your body, and your tastebuds will forget the regular flour items. Well, not entirely, but your cravings will diminish quite a bit - negative association works wonders there. Gluten = pain, discomfort, nausea, D or C, more pain, terrible gas, even more pain...
I'm sure you get the picture. And as you recover and feel normal, it's even easier to go gluten-free, because once you feel good, you won't want to do anything to jeapordize it. Good luck!! Hope you start healing soon!

Well, considering a lot of drs don't understand celiac disease - and you think that at least THEY would want to know more, I suppose the reactions of typical lay people shouldn't be surprising. But you would think that if they were more of the friends that you thought they were that they would be more caring or at least try to understand more. I don't bother with people when they have that attitude - The fact is I cannot have gluten and if they can't understand that and can't seem to get their minds around that fact, then there's nothing I can do about it. Can't teach someone who doesn't want to learn.

Any body know which soups are gluten-free?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I haven't found any regular campbells, but their Select gold label in a box - butternut and italian tomato don't have wheat. Progresso new england clam chowder, Southwestern-style chicken, Campbells chunky Grilled Sirloin steak, and their chunky chilis don't list wheat either.

It's very okay for you to post here asking for support.
I'm very sorry to hear of your tragic loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.
-
Not sure if this has been done here already, but I was just wondering if there's any corelation between blood type and celiac disease. All the people in my family who have celiac are AB+ (including me). Just curious. Maybe we can send our results to Dr. D'Adamo (the guy who wrote Eat Right for your Blood Type) and see what he thinks!
thanks
Gabby

Well, why not? And it doesn't hurt. I voted (A)

Hello Hall100 and welcome to the forum -
Well, I think your naturopath was correct, but your dr was mistaken in how long you should have been on gluten before the test. But the fact that you were on gluten, went gluten-free, felt better, went back on gluten and felt worse is a positive dx for celiac disease - the diet challenge. That's how my gp did it for me 9 yrs ago. That's the only testing he ever did for me, and I'm not about to get any other testing done. Well, if I had some extra cash I'd do the DNA because I'd want to know.
Anyhow, going back on the gluten re-damaged your intestines so now it's like starting all over again. Stick with it, I'm sure you'll be better in time.

I thought that the honey bbq were gluten-free! I know that the chilli cheese are not, but I think that I read on their website that the honey bbq twists were gluten-free. I also checked the label, and it looked safe. Maybe I missed something.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well, it's been awhile since I had them. Somebody offered them to me so I had one while I was reading the labels - wheat. Usually wheat is used to disperse seasonings equally and as a binder of flavorings to food.
-
I agree with Raven- if you feel good, keep eating gluten-free. You're not denying your body of any important nutrients like essential amino acids or anything. Your body is telling you something isn't right when you eat gluten. It's just that the tests aren't sophisticated enough yet to tell what is wrong. Listen to your body and keep it happy!

i used to take echinacea, it always kept me from getting sick. (don't take it now, bad with active autoimmunes however...)
colloidal silver--anyone here use it? i am not endorsing it here, so don't run out and get it, apparently some people will get argyria from it... however, i will say my dh loves it and it always gets rid of his sinus infections...even with conventional antibiotics have not.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My mom is always trying me to take echinacea, but with all of my hayfever allergies I don't try it. I take extra zinc and C for immunity boosting.
Colloidal silver? Never heard of it - and I don't like antibiotics for my chronic sinusitis. And argyria? Could you expand on that, please?
For me - ginger is an old stand-by for upset tummy. That's why ginger ale is so nice when my stomach is upset. Just last week I had to leave work my stomach hurt so bad. Didn't want fresh soda, but thankfully we had a bottle of gingerale at home that had been opened for over a week. Flat, but soothing. Chamomile tea is soothing for my tummy too.
Is Gluten Killing My Brain Cells?

I get the brain fog, but not as severe as yours, but I was giving myself a low level glutening every day by eating cold cereal with malt. I started to get numbness in my extremeties and a constant low level brain fog. My theory is that the celiac disease causes malabsorption and so the body doesn't get what it needs to keep your nerve cells healthy and firing properly. And your brain (and everything else) functions by nerve synapses. So if they don't fire properly, it's like putting really cheap gasoline in a high powered engine - it goes but not too well. (Sort of showing my age here- who remembers regular and premium gasoline and gas price wars when gas was $.27/gal?)
