ARCHIVED Mayo Appt
AlwaysLearning replied to Sharonmarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to ask, did the celiac doctor who told you to stop taking supplements run any tests for deficiencies before telling you to stop taking them? Granted, I'm generally anti-pill and would advise getting tested before advising taking them, but if you're having issues, I'd at least look into it further. -

ARCHIVED Will I Ever Feel Better?
AlwaysLearning replied to WisconsinKim's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your experience is anything like mine, you'll start to see/feel noticeable differences in your body in the first few days of going gluten free. Despite being in the midst of withdrawal, I was ecstatic! And I had so much hope for a future with fewer problems! Seriously, little things throughout my entire body that I didn't even realize were problems... -
Relief from most of my gluten problems occurred in the first two days of going gluten free, but I probably wasn't completely successful at steering clear of it for the first month, getting hit from some of the hidden sources like spaghetti sauce and my toaster. But I still had/have plenty of problems related to vitamin deficiencies that I'm just now starting...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Depression
AlwaysLearning replied to SteffiW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I read somewhere that vilii damage is one of the later stages of gluten allergies so I wouldn't expect an endoscopy to show much if you've been gluten free long enough for previous damage to have healed. Plus it shows up in patches so unless they get lucky and biopsy a patch that is damaged you could still get a false negative test result. And I've also... -

ARCHIVED Soap Causing Abdominal Pain
AlwaysLearning replied to DreamRunner's topic in Super Sensitive People
I have to wonder if it is from the soap and not something else. I had abdominal pains long after going gluten free and just recently found out about the link between vitamin B12 deficiency (which I have) and abdominal pain similar to IBS. The pain disipated within minutes of taking a B12 supplement (gluten-free, of course). If you are showering and eating... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Was Causing Schizo Problems
AlwaysLearning replied to CanineGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
CanineGluten, thanks for making me smile. Your posts are quite entertaining, especially the one that has you not eating any grains but drinking a beer. I can't imagine trying to eliminate all grains all at once. It doesn't surprise me at all that you keep going back to having them in your diet. How about focusing on just gluten, which is highly likely... -

ARCHIVED Does Gluten Affect Your Thinking ?
AlwaysLearning replied to jiggles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of my first symptoms after being glutened (even minute contamination) is irritability. If nothing sets me off, I might miss it, but it doesn't take much to set me off and my reactions are completely out of proportion to the situation. Anger is often the first noticeable symptom that makes me realize that I've been glutened on a small scale. This normally... -
I'm jealous! Every eating-out experience I've had to date has meant getting glutened! You should post the restaurant's name and address.

ARCHIVED I Have Regressed After Two Weeks
AlwaysLearning replied to MizzyLou's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wouldn't overlook other vitamin and mineral deficiencies as a cause of problems. Many of the problems I had hoped would improve when I went gluten free got worse instead, but seem to respond well to vitamin supplements. (Vitamin D and B12 both appear to be problematic for me though I'm sure there are others I haven't discovered yet). Gluten reactions... -

ARCHIVED Hi, New Here, And To Gluten-Free Cooking.
AlwaysLearning replied to ChiTownZee's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would never eat anything that came out of a regular bakery. The dust in the air from wheat-based flours would be enough to contaminated the end result of anything that was labeled as gluten free. That said, I know that there are two gluten-free bakeries in my area and another in my home town that do nothing but make entirely gluten-free products. And... -

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
AlwaysLearning replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Beer Chicken (I've done this poaching method with just water and it is still quite tasty. White wine works too) This makes a juicy, evenly cooked chicken with lots of flavor, and enough gravy to serve over rice. (I normally serve with a separate side vegetable.) Ingredients: • Boneless chicken (I prefer thighs and get the organic/free range) • Black oli... -

ARCHIVED De-Glutening The Kitchen
AlwaysLearning replied to laura1959's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd also replace: • Wooden and plastic utensils such as big spoons, spatulas, etc. • Collanders and sieves, especially those that are plastic or are woven. If you have a metal collander with big holes, you can probably clean it well enough. • Non-stick pans. Don't forget the bake ware. Don't forget things like: • Butter dishes that are made of... -
I definitely had jaw pain related to gluten. It would hurt mainly when chewing and start a few hours after eating something that contained large amounts of gluten. But it went away completely when I went gluten-free. I particularly noticed this in the last month before I went gluten-free, when I was starting to become suspicious of gluten. But TMJ is also...

ARCHIVED Are Reactions For One Person Always The Same?
AlwaysLearning replied to tka's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had different reactions. I've never had a full-on dose of gluten, meaning I haven't knowingly eaten anything that contains gluten. But the amount of contamination matters. Lots of contamination means that my stomach will start to rumble almost immediately, though perhaps not soon enough to stop eating the food that triggers it. Any level of contamination... -

ARCHIVED Tomato/tomato Sauce Alternative?
AlwaysLearning replied to Renegade's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most premade spaghetti sauces contain gluten. It is one of the hidden ingredients in the tomato paste. There is a gluten-free brand called Monte Bene. Depending on the flavor you choose, it could also contain milk. Open Original Shared Link -

ARCHIVED Going Gluten-Free How Bad What Is At First?
AlwaysLearning replied to Renegade's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Presume that spaghetti sauce contains gluten unless it is actually marked as gluten free on the label. It is often an ingredient in the tomato paste. So don't blame nightshades right off the bat if you haven't found a premade sauce that is made more carefully. I've heard anecdotal stories of coffee becoming bothersome for those who go gluten free. Curious... -

ARCHIVED How Long Challange Is Recomended Before Biopsi?
AlwaysLearning replied to Mum in Norway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is there a reason you are seeking out a confirmed diagnosis of celiac? I ask because there seem to be plenty of downsides to being confirmed without many ups. On the upside, if you were willing to do the math to figure out the differences in costs of gluten free foods vs. non, you could have some more tax deductions. On the downside, you could have to... -

ARCHIVED Too Much Good Flora In Colon Found & Inflammed.
AlwaysLearning replied to KnightRobby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just treating with antibiotics seems like treating the problem without figuring out the cause. Isn't yeast supposed to help keep bacteria in check? And unless one were taking a probiotic, why would the good bacteria grow unchecked? Is there some degree of a mono-diet in the mix? Lack of or too much of a certain food? Too much raw food or too little? ... -

ARCHIVED Cleaning What I've Got To Prevent Cross-Contamination
AlwaysLearning replied to Lightforth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, I would beg, borrow, or steal some kitchen items until you can buy, especially the pots and pans that you can easily return in their original state, or even cleaner. Just one all-metal pot and pan could tide you over. Most of the other things you can work around temporarily though perhaps not conveniently. Some of the other ideas listed above are... -
Have you been tested for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? They often go hand in hand with gluten allergies and some don't seem to improve even if the digestive system has had time to heal. Over-the-counter B12 tablets took care of my abdominal pain - in minutes after taking just one! But I did take it with OJ so who knows if folic acid played a part as...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed 2 Months Ago
AlwaysLearning replied to tka's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you are describing is pretty much what most deal with. So far, I have gotten glutened every time I have eaten out with the exception of sushi (though I still have to be careful). So I have stopped trying to eat out. Facing the prospect of having 4-5 days of bad reactions is enough to make me not want to risk it. Sometimes it sucks, but I've become a... -

ARCHIVED Newly Gluten Free, New Symptoms
AlwaysLearning replied to Soconfused27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I slept quite a bit in the first few days, had plenty of gluten mishaps in the first month but generally felt much better overall in addition to having lots of odd symptoms just disappear. In hindsight, I think I felt better in that first month in part because I had been taking a multivitamin when I first went gluten free. Though a whole list of gluten... -

ARCHIVED Mayo Appt
AlwaysLearning replied to Sharonmarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sharonmarie. Get yourself tested for vitamin deficiencies. They go hand in hand with the malabsorption problems that come with gluten allergies and some of what you are describing with the leg pain is a symptom of B12 deficiency, I think. Either that or vitamin D.
