ARCHIVED Hi...(Recently Diagnosed)
AlwaysLearning replied to bellalunarena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Within two days of going gluten free, you should start to see/feel differences in your body that should help you get past the initial shock, little things that you may not have even realized were a problem will suddenly go away. For instance, my hands and feet used to be painfully cold, but all of a sudden, they were the same temperature as the rest of my... -
ARCHIVED Bloating, Cramps, Diarreha Still ..................... Attractive!
AlwaysLearning replied to LolaB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Is your tea gluten free? Lots of teas include a variety of ingredients that may be something other than just tea. My WholeFoods stores label gluten-free teas on their shelves with big green tags, and I'm always amazed at how few are actually making the gluten-free grade, though I don't doubt that there are some additional ones in the mix that are safe. There... -
ARCHIVED Confused About The Tsh Guidelines, Are My Levels Good?
AlwaysLearning replied to answerseeker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wouldn't underestimate the vitamin deficiencies when it comes to them causing problems. And though the malabsorption problems would improve in the long run, there are some vitamins that are more difficult to get straightened out, like B12 which is often added to the breads that we are no longer eating, and becomes more difficult to absorb as we age. Vitamin... -
ARCHIVED Is Okay To Self Diagnose?
AlwaysLearning replied to freeme808's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In the U.S., if you don't have health insurance through an employer, you can expect to pay higher health insurance rates with a celiac diagnosis. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free & Dairy Free - Basic Shopping List For A Beginner
AlwaysLearning replied to hbunting86's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are so many places to find hidden gluten that I wouldn't rule it out as the main source of your problems just yet. There is a whole list of things that need to be duplicated or replaced in your kitchen in order to avoid cross contamination if you haven't done so already. With the leftovers coming home with your boyfriend, I'd say duplicate, color code... -
Gluten is an opioid pectin that messes with the opiate sensors in the brain in addition to the damage it does to the digestive system. The brain fog is just part of the withdrawal symptoms, and though it lasts for a couple days minimum, is normally the last symptom to get through before returning to normal, so you are close.

ARCHIVED Newbie, Need Some Help
AlwaysLearning replied to amitaitos's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I'd look into other issues that started before you went gluten free. First step is to look for the ones that can be found with blood tests (easy and least expensive option too) so that means checking the hormone levels and vitamin deficiencies. And of course, if you do have deficiencies, make sure you only use gluten-free supplements. I had hoped... -
ARCHIVED How About A Reward For Avoiding Getting Glutened!
AlwaysLearning replied to AlwaysLearning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So how long do I have to be gluten-free to not be considered a newbie? I'm close to the nine month mark, though only about four months since my last major accidental glutening (learning the hard way that restaurant's gluten-free menus are not gluten-free), and about two since a minute contamination incident (I actually watched them wash everything they... -
ARCHIVED Is Genetically Modified Wheat Common Now-Days Responsible For This Condition?
AlwaysLearning replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Though I haven't read every link in this thread, I have done some reading about "modern wheat" and can't buy into that concept as the cause of gluten allergies. Aside from some types containing more gluten which could mean that people are suffering more extensive damage faster, I think most of the increase in diagnosis comes from increased awareness and scientific... -
ARCHIVED You Can't Hurry It.
AlwaysLearning replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Big thanks to everyone who posts on this forum. It was a huge help to me, not just to point me in the right direction of gluten as a problem that doctors all missed, but also in helping me to avoid making mistakes in the beginning ... though the first few months were still an accidental glutening mine field. -
ARCHIVED How About A Reward For Avoiding Getting Glutened!
AlwaysLearning replied to AlwaysLearning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, Udis products do taste good, though after my initial "buy anything to avoid feeling deprived" phase in the first few months, and then the "buy really extravagant raw ingredients for my own cooking" phase in the next few, I think I've finally settled into a more regular pattern that is low on sweets and less expensive. I suppose I could do new kitchen... -
ARCHIVED Struggling As A Celiac:(
AlwaysLearning replied to lexibrowning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I'd work harder at teaching everyone around you about the dangers of contamination and continued exposure. I had pain and bloating long after going gluten-free, but vitamin deficiencies appear to have been the cause, or at least supplements seem to have helped ease the pain and get me back to my normal size again. Plus, cravings went away once I... -
ARCHIVED 41 Male With 24/7 Vertigo And Floating Sensation Off Balance
AlwaysLearning replied to coil's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want to start with simpler possible causes, allergic reactions in general will affect the ears, causing pressure from swelling. But if you're already gluten-free for a while, that should have eased up already. Iron deficiencies also cause dizziness so a simple blood test could rule that out and look for other possible deficiencies from malabsorption... -
ARCHIVED How About A Reward For Avoiding Getting Glutened!
AlwaysLearning posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've decided that I want some sort of reward for avoiding accidental glutenings, like they have chips in AA. But rather than rewarding years, it would have to be months. -
ARCHIVED Brother Has Same Symptoms But Wont Adhere To Diet (Rant)
AlwaysLearning replied to whitepine's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I so feel your pain. When I went gluten free and realized all of the little things that it "cured", I immediately realized that my entire mother's side of the family was exhibiting symptoms with just a few exceptions. But I did limit the number of them that I told about my suspicions about their health. My sister was the first person I told ... and she... -
ARCHIVED Responses To "i Have Celiac" Or "i Have Food Allergies" ...... Gotta Vent A Little!
AlwaysLearning replied to cap6's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love it when people rant. It makes me feel better too. I have to attend a family event at a restaurant that I can't avoid, and am dreading having the whole gluten conversation arise when I don't have any food in front of me. I don't mind having to eat my own food before and after, but I just really don't want to have to have those conversations. I'm even... -

ARCHIVED Have I Been Glutened?
AlwaysLearning replied to no7ang's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lots of borborygmus gurgling is one of the first symptoms I experience when I've had quite a bit of contamination in what should otherwise be a gluten-free food. It starts within minutes of being glutened and can last for several hours. And I really only experienced that in the first couple months of going gluten free. Not sure if that means that I've gotten... -
ARCHIVED Candida Vs Gluten Intolerance
AlwaysLearning replied to Renegade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't jump on the yeast band wagon too easily. Yeast is a natural part of the body's flora. It is supposed to be there. I agree 100% with the previous poster that if your yeast levels were out of balance - you'd know it without a doubt. "Leaky gut" is also controversial but when I researched it, all I found was personal anecdotes without any scientific... -
ARCHIVED Tomato/tomato Sauce Alternative?
AlwaysLearning replied to Renegade's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You are so right that I did not word that well. How about this: Most premade spaghetti sauces have the potential to contain gluten. It can be one of the hidden ingredients in the tomato paste, natural flavors, or any one of a multitude of ingredients that may be used in a sauce due to a lack of procedures being in place to specifically monitor gluten during... -
ARCHIVED New Study Points To Antibiotics As Celiac Disease Risk Factor - Celiac.com
AlwaysLearning replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think it could be more likely that those who are suffering from an autoimmune disease are more likely to develop illnesses that require antibiotics, especially because the sinuses are one of the areas that are inflamed by gluten allergies. -
ARCHIVED Need Advice, Please!
AlwaysLearning replied to Niks's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have problems with abdominal pain that definitely responds well to B12. And it is worse on the lower left side though is pretty much all over. My levels aren't as low as your daughters and I've never experienced the extremes you describe but at their worst, some constipation was in the mix as well. If you just research B12 deficiencies, you won't find... -
ARCHIVED Hypothyroidism And Fluoride
AlwaysLearning replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I totally agree that Dr. Mercola is right on target half of the time, and out in left field the other. But he has often made me research more on my own, which is never a bad thing. When it comes to fluoride, my personal experience alone is enough to tell me that it is a poison. After having a filling go awry and horrible tooth pain follow, the dentist told... -
ARCHIVED Bloating For 8 Months
AlwaysLearning replied to jasonD2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was having horrible bloating and abdominal pain related to a vitamin deficiency, and it improved immediately with supplements. That said, I wouldn't run out and start taking supplements without getting tested for deficiencies. When it comes to any sort of pill, including anitbiotics, not taking them is always going to be better than taking them unless...
