  1. "He's also developing an egg that will contain a high level of gluten antibodies that may one day be sold commercially."... from the article..

The side effects to eating the gluten antibodies egg are neck twitching, grub digging and mild random clucking.

  2. Just curious Ravenwood - is it the mild blunting of villi that makes you think it's a positive biopsy? From what I've read, other intolerances, like soy or casein, can cause blunting? I think your idea is great though, and I am planning on getting copies of my biopsies and finding a new doctor!! Thanks!

I'm not Raven, but mild blunting of the villi is consistance with Celiac Disease. Your pathology report is very similar to mine. That, coupled with your positive dietary response to the removal of gluten, is a diagnosis.

As mentioned, a more knowledgeable doctor could help you with a more defined diagnosis.

    Welcome to the Club! ;)

  3. In Advanced celiac, when the villi are all gone, they can see that and the overall looks of the intestines are different.

If there is only some villi damage, but the villi are still there, they often cannot see anything.

There are some images somewhere online.

    nora

My pathology report indicated Mild Villous blunting, as well as visibly indicated. Unfortunately, I don't have the time for research links, but they're out there somewhere.

I don't believe that villous atrophy is considered late stage Celiac Disease, as is sometimes posted here. Google Marsh Scale-Celiac and various stages are indicated.

    Gotta run, sorry. ;)

  4. Hello, I am 22 and was wondering what alcoholic mixed drinks are safe? Like the ones you get at clubs?

I have a grocery shopping guide book but under alcohol it just states that all distilled alcohol is gluten-free.

What does distilled mean? I understand I cannot have beer or malt beverages.

    The drinks I am most wondering about are the following, and the ingredients I am pretty sure they contain;

Strawberry strippers-(strawberry pucker & orange juice)

    Bullfrog-(Lime flavored Vodka & Sprite)

Any list of any others that are safe will help me out, or any info you have about the 2 I listed. Thanks! :D

  5. Just to update anyone moving to DC, here is what I found--

In Georgetown: SweetGreen, Qdoba, Chipotle, 5 Guys, and the Tombs were my staples. The Tombs is amazing with allergies, I highly recommend it. The same people (I think) own Clydes, so I am sure they would be easy too.

In Rosslyn/Court House: Silver Diner, Pho 75, Baja Fresh, California Tortilla, Chipotle

Bethesda: Original House of Pancakes, Austin Grill, Chipotle, Baja Fresh, and supposedly Lilit Cafe...

I tried Lilit Cafe, but they messed up my take-out order/I was recovering from norovirus, so I have nothing really to report :o .

My gosh, is the Tombs still open. That's where we went, when we skipped Mr. Barletts government class, to hang out. (but don't tell my mom  )

  6. I am so new to this also, but I look for the least ingredients and go from there. Like just butterfat and salt, etc. You get the idea.

Before Christmas, seeing all of those modified ingredients never daunted me....NOW!!! It's as if I slam on the breaks when I see all of that stuff!

    Good Luck!

The least ingredients is what I look for as well. That's why I buy Butter (real butter), not margerine or sweet cream. Just makes like a little bit simplier.

  7. Like many of you, i have been sick for many years. My dad was just diagnosed with celiac this past spring. he got really sick, was in the hospital, lost 25 lbs. I have had milder GI issues for past 9 years. Had many tests, no diagnosis.

When my dad was diagnosed, I went to have the blood test and biopsy, both which were negative. I didn't believe the results and went on a gluten free diet for 3 weeks with great results. I am trying my best to be gluten free at this time but it can be hard at times. My brother also believes he may have issues with gluten.

It seems the professional medical community is so subjective on this subject. Every MD i would ask or research that i do tells me something conflicting.

MY question is: how do i figure out if i am just gluten intolerant (and can eat gluten and do no future harm, just have bad symptoms) vs a celiac? Do I assume that since my dad has it, it is therefore genetic and likely celiac? Does gluten intolerance turn into celiac if non compliant?

Thanks for your help in advance! this forum has been priceless!

    Welcome!

You have found a great site. The TENDENCY for Celiac to be passed on to first degree relatives is about 20%. The current available testing it not what we would like at this time. Although, there can be false negatives, but no false positives.

Some believe that a gluten intolerance is a precursor to Celiac Disease. It might be, but I have seen no studies to support that theory. As you know with Celiac Disease, there is an autoimmune response. With a gluten intolerance, sensitivity or allergy, there is not.

It might be wise, given your family history and symptoms, that you begin a complete gluten free diet. A positive dietary response is a diagnosis of either a gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease, as the RX is the same.

  8. If you are just beginning the diet, I would stay away from any possible gluten exposure. Here is some information that might be helpful to you:

Eat simply. Watch out for your scratched pots and pans, wooden cutting boards, plastic spoons because they can hide hidden gluten.

Check your meds, shampoos, vitamins, lotions, lipsticks/balm or anything that can get into your mouth.

This is a great site and welcome!

  9. When I find a product that is gluten free but the label says something like "processed in a facility that also processes wheat," how often is this actually a problem for celiacs? Should I also avoid these products? Who out there still eats these things?

That's pretty much a personal choice based on experience.

If I have other options, that would not be my choice, but otherwise I would consume a product with a shared facility. I am also not sensitive to trace amounts of gluten.

  10. Well I got "gluten-free Lip Balm" and "Stop Stomach Gas" , very interesting associations there :lol:

Tom said murky beers/quirky dears

About the NHL channel, weeeeelll I didn't exactly know I had it either. I think it was the game when the U.S. was playing (Em was that the second game?) that I thought maybe I should utilize the handy dandy "search" feature on the menu option that digital cable provides (that I always forget about having). So I searched for everything hockey being televised and there it was!

    Nighty night Nik!

Ok, this just in (from a google search by Jools).......from what I understand these boxed sets or are the marketing "kits" for this very new product that will be coming out in 2009. Apparently select Walmarts and Walgreens have them across the country (not sure about Canada and UK for Em and Nik). And unfortunately my Walmarts don't have them :(

    and Laura too :D

    It's a silly part-ay!!!

    And Lisa too!

  11. My mom and I want to take a cruise (we have never taken one before) and we are both celiacs - Has anyone had a really great vaca on any of the cruise lines while being gluten free? Thanks in advance for any recommendations! :)

This might be an old site, but bob and ruths.com arranges for gluten free travel, including gluten free cruises, around the world. It's a great place to start.

  12. Everyone knows that Valentine's Day is coming up in just over a month. There are also some candies that come out just around this time of year. Does anyone know if the Hershey's white and milk chocolate swirl kisses are gluten free?! They are some of the only candy that I actually like and can eat in handfulls :P !

Dove Chocolate Promises are sooooo much better. I'm not a fan of Hershey anyway. B) Hersheys will not disclose their source of natural flavors

  13. Welcome!

This is the blood panel that is specific for Celiac Disease:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

For optimum accuracy, a continued gluten diet is recommended. Some doctors may consider a positive dietary reponse the diet to be diagnostic as well.

Members here may be getting colonoscopys in conjunction with endoscopy exams due to years of digestive issues and it's wise to check out both ends (so to speak). Although, an endoscopy/biopsy can detect Celiac Disease found in the small intestines. Colonoscopy is specific for the large intestines.

  14. Hello everyone,

I thought we might keep a running list of supplements that you all take on a daily basis to help heal or alleviate glutening symptoms.

    - L-Glutamine, for intestinal healing

    - Multivitamin by Doctor's Choice for Sensitive Stomachs

    - Fennel Seed, for bloating and stomach irritation

Brand names that guarantee gluten free status would be very helpful to many members. Great idea!
