ARCHIVED Nioxin Products
Claire posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently recommended Nioxin products (cannot remember what forum I was in at the time). Some alert member corrected me for which I give thanks. So sorry for giving bad advice. Ignorance is definitely not bliss! I did contact the company and got a swift reply: yes their products do contain wheat. I see in some older posts it being said that the... -
Thanks for the reply. Not on mine. You probably are right - an old bag. They shouldn't sell 'old' bags. Right? Have you every used this flour? Anything good or bad about it? Claire

ARCHIVED Imagine If This Happened In The Us....
Claire replied to celiac3270's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's probably why this won't happen here. We have to feed Big Pharma. It is sort of the law of the land. -
That is what I thought too. Even material put out by hospitals will list buckwheat as a no-no. I would be lost without it! Red Mill displays Teff in its' gluten free list but does not identify it as such on the package. Too bad. They should. Thanks for your comment. Claire

Information on some of the flour substitutes is outright contradictory. The following are clips from various blurbs about Teff. It contains no gluten Teff is nearly gluten-free it contains practically no gluten Avoid: All cereals containing wheat, rye, oats, or barley; bran; graham; wheat germ; durum; kaska; bulgar; buckwheat*; millet*;...

I was told recently by a neurologist that if you put a gram of gluten and a drop of blood (from a celiac disease person) together in a petri dish - an interactive attack will begin almost immediately and will be sustained for days - even weeks. This is not to be mess with. Claire

There are some really sharp wigs out there. It is an answer for the short term - while you work on your health - and your hair. There is a product line by Nioxin that is recommended by physicians and hair salons for patients who have had chemotherapy. I too have lost a lot of hair. I had tons to start with so it is more noticeable to me than anyone else...

ARCHIVED More Restrictions

Soy Garden Margerine (100 vegan) - gluten free as a spread or for baking. For a 'sometimes' treat with cheese - get the oldest hard cheese. Also unpasteurized cheese - the Swiss seems to be well tolerated. You can use a Lactaid tablet with it to be on the safe side but generally unprocessed, unpasteurized cheese will work out. Unpasteurized may be hard... -
Processed food and medications play a role in leaky gut syndrome but 'reactive' food itself plays a far greater one. Sometimes with disorders like celiac disease it is hard to know which came first the chicken or the egg. After years of bizarre symptoms i was diagnosed (in 1990) with Type II, Delayed Food Reactions. I tested reactive for all grains except...

ARCHIVED Last Min Advice?
Claire replied to Danijela's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would suggest you see both a gastointestinal specialist and a neurologist. Hopefully that route will lead you to some help. You also might see a naturopathic doctor. They have a lot to offer. Don't let doctors tell you what you don't have. Claire -

ARCHIVED Substitutes For Cornstarch And Soy Flour
Claire replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That sounds like a good idea. I can't handle corn. As for soy - I really wouldn't care to use it because I think it isn't the greatest for either texture or flavor - with the exception of Van's Soy, gluten free waffles which are wonderful. Have you ever used teff? Thanks for your help. Claire -

ARCHIVED Substitutes For Cornstarch And Soy Flour
Claire posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would like to hear from anyone who has found good substitutes for cornstarch and for soy flour. Most commercial gluten free baking mixes contain one or the other. Even recipes for making your own seem to likewise use these products. Thanks for your help. Claire -

They might miss a sale if they did that! Excuse me but my cynicism isn't improving a bit. -

ARCHIVED B12 Deficiency And Medical Incompetance
Claire replied to canadianbowlofcherries's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are so young! I am much older. Consider yourself lucky if you get a diagnosis now - after only a few years My problems began nearly 30 years ago and only now am I approaching a diagnosis. Now is too late to repair irreparable damage done to the central nervous system. Doctors are a threat to your health - if not to your life. Go gluten-free and don... -
Buckwheat gluten free waffles with peanut butter, jam, jelly or both. I kept a large jar of mixed nuts, seeds, dried fruits on the shelf. As you made this up for yourself you can exclude anything that bothers you. The possibilites are endless. It is always ready for a snack or to add to dry gluten free cereals to make a delicious crunchy breakfast...

I am looking for a support group somewhere in the area between Frederick, Md. and Harrisburg, PA. Those places would be the ultimate distance. I live in southern PA - about a half hour from the Maryland border. Thanks for info.

ARCHIVED Just Found Out And Need Some Advice On Docs.
Claire replied to morrigan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I understand that this skin disorder is the slowest of the celiac symptoms to clear up totally - from weeks to a couple of years. Having seen it in a friend I would say it is well worth waiting out the relief and whatever it takes to get it. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Did I Finally Find An Answer?
Claire replied to Claire415's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hate to tell you but I think you came to the right place. Do an internet search for Dermatitis Herpetiformis - a skin disorder that is the sole property of celiacs. That is what you seem to be describing. Good luck namesake. -
ARCHIVED I'm An Idiot - Feel Free To Tell Me Off.
Claire replied to nadinec's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Smart girl! I can tell you that it doesn't take much to do damage to body cells that you cannot see and maybe not even feel the consequences for months - even many years. I know whereof I speak! I am living with the consequences. I was not deliberately careless. I didn't know that gluten was the problem. Thought for years that it was yeast. I gave up... -
