  1. As someone who has been newly diagnosed as well, my perspective is that you don't have to buy a lot to try to heal. Talk to your son and have him decide what type of track he wants to take with this. It'll help some of the psychological shock of the change. Research things together and as a family so everyone understands and feels included. Pretty much what...
  2. Last night I had a dream that I just kept eating "normal" pizza, and I was terrified that when I woke up it would be true and I would be sick for the next three days. The thing is, I've had a really positive experience with my diagnosis (sorry to all the posters who have felt ostracized). All my friends and family have made every effort to try to understand...
  3. Thanks for all your tips! I made Tinkyada pasta tonight which (unbeknownst to me when I bought it) has spinach powder that turns the water a lovely green. But I don't know if it was that or the near obsession level of care that I put in to make it not stick... But it worked!!
  4. Welcome! And it will be okay. I just got diagnosed too (by blood in February and my biopsy was last week) and I also happen to be in college! It's difficult at first and you will always be at risk eating something you don't make, but it doesn't mean you have to starve. Find out how to contact your dining services. As someone who is on a meal plan, they...
  5. Thanks for all the tips! We do keep all our food separate, only eating what we each buy except for some staples and times when it would be ridiculous to buy a whole extra thing (like honey and salt). We like different types of peanut butter and jellies and such like that. She doesn't cook/bake much - that's all me, so I can keep that stuff pretty separate...
  6. I just finished up all my diagnosis stuff on Friday and am trying to figure out how to keep my teeny, tiny dorm kitchen safe. I share the apartment with my wonderful roommate who is trying her hardest to understand cross contamination and make our kitchen safe. She's a huge gluten eater though, so it can get a bit difficult. We've already discussed getting...
  7. How do you keep brown rice pasta from sticking? The worst I've dealt with is spaghetti and shell style noodles. I used a bigger pot tonight and that helped but I still had an entire section of spaghetti that adhered to itself creating a crunchy, chewy glob at the end of the strands. All the pasta that did not get stuck to itself was a perfect texture. Is...
  8. It hasn't come out yet, but I'm super excited for Gluten Free Girl Every Day. Open Original Shared Link That's her blog post talking about the book. Her blog is my favorite place to go when I need reassurance that everything will be okay and for ideas for great food.
  9. And I'm done!! Everything went really well today. The doctor only took one or two biopsies after he said he was going to take 8...which is slightly frustrating. But he also said there was enough visual damage that I should start being gluten free today, which was the plan anyway. I'm still a little sleepy and groggy but I don't remember a thing after they...
  10. Update: I had more gluten yesterday than I've had in the past week and man did I pay for it. I'm still feeling it in my limbs today (soreness, tingling) but there were multiple points where my body was trying to decide if I'd stop hurting it if I puked or passed out. Luckily neither happened. But I haven't felt that bad in a long time... since before...
  11. It's finally here! My endoscopy is on Friday at 9am. I've been doing a gluten challenge for the past three weeks to ensure that I get the positive I know is there. Even if the biopsy comes back negative, I have my blood tests and these past three weeks have been such a living hell that I'm never touching gluten again. So here I am, the last 48 hours...
  12. I'm having my endoscopy on Friday and was instructed to go back on gluten right after the meeting with the GI. If it makes you feel really sick to the point where you can't function, talk to your doctor. How important is having this last test to you? That being said, if you do an endoscopy stay on gluten, at least a little. Going back on is a lot worse than...
  13. I'm a week out from my biopsy. I went off gluten after I got my blood tests back in February. I just started back on it about two weeks ago and I'm not having the same symptoms as the ones that prompted me to get tested. Initially I was reacting a lot more but this past week I've almost felt asymptomatic digestive wise but psychologically and physiologically...
  14. Here are some articles to back you up: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I had to go back on gluten because of my biopsy next Friday after being off for three weeks and the psychological effects are amazing. Off gluten my ADD seemed to disappear and the insecurities I've been working through in therapy...
  15. Stay on gluten. But yeah about a slice of bread a day (or equivalent) will be adequate. Some people choose to go full overboard with gluten in every meal, but if it makes you feel super crappy then keep it to a minimum. For blood testing you should be on it for 12 weeks, for a biopsy 3-4 weeks, according to the University of Chicago Celiac's Center (cureceliacdisease...
  16. If they prepared your potato on a surface with gluten then you could be cross contaminated. If you're going to check for any sort of other food intolerance, then do it in a controlled environment like your own kitchen.
  17. I don't know how many of you read "Gluten Free Girl" but Shauna's stories and writing have been super helpful to me throughout this entire process. She has a great attitude about living and eating gluten free that I think sometimes gets a bit lost on these forums. Here is a link to her page titled "New to Gluten Free?" but her recipes and entire blog is worth...
  18. That's a sucky answer to get! Very frustrating as well. If you are considering the biopsy, you'll need to stay on gluten, just going to put that out there. I'm two and a half weeks away from my biopsy and I had to go back on gluten after 3 weeks off and I'm about ready to call in sick for the semester. Going back on is a lot harder than staying on. And...
  19. If you had a positive biopsy result then you have celiacs. I don't know why your doctor wants blood tests unless s/he is testing for something besides celiacs. Your initial tests could have come back negative because a few weeks is time enough to heal. Celiac can turn on at any time so make sure your children stay on at least a light gluten diet for at...
  20. I started back on gluten on Friday for my endoscopy on the 19th and am having weird symptoms that I'm not used to, and one is pretty concerning. The biggest one is more of a girl issue. I've been on the pill for 4 years now. I started it because I was noticing a distinctive D/C cycle that aligned with my menstrual cycle. It fixed that problem except I...
  21. I almost trust restaurants that have a "There may be cross contamination" disclaimer more. Because then I know they at least understand that cc is an issue. But I look at reviews of places (Find Me Gluten Free app) and only use the list and cautions from my local celiac support group. The support group also has descriptions on the varying levels of celiac...
  22. As everyone has said, you have celiacs. But it'll be okay. For being athletic with celiac's, make sure your macros are staying in a good level. I'm kind of in the same boat (more like a canoe compared to your boat), but started being gluten intolerant at 17 ish and the more I took it out, the worse of a reaction I had. I'm about to turn 21 and I swim on...
  23. As nvsmom said, you might have to get them tested every couple years because it does just kind of "turn on" one day. Though from everything I've seen and other people's stories, a stressful event or body trauma are common "triggers" so especially test after large life transitions. My IBS kicked on when I entered high school and I think Celiac turned on as...
  24. You probably still have gluten in your system, if headaches/migraines are one of your recognizable symptoms. It take most people a couple days to flush things out and be back to normal. For me it can be as little as 40 hours but up to 60ish until I stop feeling the effects of gluten. But do you know about your reaction to any sort of anesthesia? I remember...
  25. Glad to hear you made it through! I hope you get the answers you are looking for, but it's good that you're listening to your body about it. So find some gluten-free pizza, bread, pasta, cookies and hard cider and go back to feeling better!
