  1. I'm not looking forward to it in the least, but I'm a firm believer in the effects of a positive attitude. My dining hall has actually been great to the point where they started stocking gluten free pastas for me and will start a whole new dish just for me; I'm the only one who ever asks for gluten-free. But if this starts hurting my grades I'm going to call...
  2. You have to find your way around things that you can't let go of. For me it's cookies... totally addicted. But if you want some positivity about this whole experience, check out glutenfreegirl.com - amazing articles about her life gluten free and great recipes. It will get easier, you just have to embrace it as part of who you are as well as not letting...
  3. Happens to me all the time. But I've never considered it weird. If it's uncomfortable to pass then maybe that could be an issue but there are certain things our bodies don't completely process which is how you can tell about an animal's diet by its scat.
  4. ...finishing the Girl Scout cookies my mom sent me 2 days before my blood work came back positive, not worrying about cross contamination when I'm eating somewhere besides my own kitchen (as a college student that happens a lot), dining hall cookies, being able to eat with my friends on campus, orange chicken, not stressing about "I can't eat that," not checking...
  5. I just went in to see the GI today and have been almost 3 weeks totally gluten free. He wanted to do the endoscopy and said if my reaction to gluten every day that just a little every other day or so would help ensure that we get the positive that I know is there. Talk to your doc about your reaction and maybe if it's bad enough, you could just stop asking...
  6. I think mine was stress triggered. I started having colon spasms connected to IBS during my freshman year of high school in 2006 but it didn't get really bad until my senior year. I started on birth control that year to try to deal with a D/C cycle that lined up with my menstrual cycle. It worked except in high stress situations. The last few months of senior...
  7. I usually feel like something is just "off" in the world starting within half an hour, the next day is filled with the worst smelling farts, then about 40-50 hours after glutening it all comes rushing out and that's the sign that I can start moving on with my life after eating tons of yogurt and drinking lots of water. It makes it difficult to know what the...
  8. This past weekend at the grocery store I realized my brand selection depended a lot on if something was listed specifically as gluten free versus another product that had the same/similar ingredients list that was also gluten free based on that. Even in things that should be inherently gluten free such as plain yogurt or deli ham. So my question is how...
  9. That could explain the years of horribly chapped lips!! But I've got my boyfriend trained that if he doesn't wash up after eating gluten, no good bye kisses. It's kinda sad sometimes, but getting sick from a snog is worse!
  10. I think what gets people up in arms is the people who say they are "gluten-free" and then go and eat fried rice with regular soy sauce for example. The people who claim bread and pasta free is gluten free. And as with everything in life, we as the quote-unquote experts of what is and isn't gluten free, should take it as a learning/teaching opportunity. There...
  11. I've had multiple mixed IBS and gluten-like reactions from Planter's honey roasted peanuts. I bought Wegman's brand honey roasted peanuts (labeled gluten free) to just make sure it was the brand and not peanuts in general and I'm totally fine (eating them now actually). The only difference in ingredients is that Planter's uses fructose and corn starch...
  12. So I messed up. I was finally sold on the "eat gluten beforehand" and ready to go in and get all my testing finished two Fridays ago. And then I got sick. Not glutened sick but flu sick and decided in my 102 fevered state that it would be better for me to heal if I took gluten back out. I was also stuck in my gluten-free apartment for days and as a result...
  13. I got a copy of my blood tests today! From what I can tell I'm a strong positive. But I was also right in that my university health center was not super thorough, so I'm glad I've got the gastro appointment set up for Friday. I'm going to try to copy it here as precisely as possible Test name ----------- Results --- Units ----- Range Tissue Transglut...
  14. Thanks for your reply! Did you go through IES? Just wondering because that's how I'm getting there. I lived in Germany a couple years ago so I know just how non-gluten-free friendly that cuisine was. I can speak a bit of German so I'll definitely look up what those phrases are.
  15. It might be related to just overall nutrition, which is of course affected by your celiacs. I've always had a ridiculously high drive which gets worse when I exercise (so this thread is a little scary) but my boyfriend was naturally malnourished due to other factors and once he got that straightened out he came up more to my level. So it's logical that going...
  16. Thanks for all your responses! I'm going to add gluten back in at breakfast (my body used to handle that better than later in the day) in the form of the neglected rice krispies still in my pantry and slowly finishing off the Girl Scout cookies my mom sent me two days before my blood test came back positive. I'm also going to go by the health center and...
  17. Are you sure it's just the coffee or caffeine in the coffee? I've been totally caffeine free since 2010 and it helped with a lot of my IBS symptoms (colon spasms), but it's also gotten to the point where "decaffeinated" drinks can set me off because of the traces of caffeine.
  18. This is such a comfort to read! I had a pretty extreme gum graph when I was 18, about four years after symptoms began showing up (though I didn't get diagnosed until last month) and gum issues over all and knowing that those could be related is great!
  19. This might be totally off track... but is there anyway she could be suffering from some other issues in addition to celiac? Such as bulimia? It could explain the vomiting behaviors and if she went gluten free and continued to have symptoms it would mean admitting other issues. It's rare, but ignoring medical diagnosis to cover up undesirable or "forbidden...
  20. You mentioned that you were "being really clean" so just enjoy all those good fruits and veggies you can get. Instead of buying lots of gluten free pastas, I julianne a zucchini and put some pasta sauce over it which is a really easy meal. And I might just be weird but I also love cooked, cubed sweet potatoes with a little pasta sauce. If you (ironically...
  21. As I'm finalizing my plans for this summer, I'm realizing just how difficult all my options are going to be for dealing with celiacs. If I don't get a fellowship I applied to (I'll know in a couple weeks) then I'm scheduled to go to Austria for half of summer, ironically to study psychology of health. And I am definitely going to Russia for summer 2014 as...
  22. It's a generic so there's no company. Would the pharmacist know possibly? The internet was being unhelpful... at least with my current attention span
  23. My TJ's has gluten-free frozen waffles right by all the regular ones, so they definitely make them. Maybe if you talk to the manager then they could order some for the store? I'm guessing, because you didn't list it, that you don't have Wegmans (mostly in the north east) but if you ever go where there is one, their gluten free frozen waffles are better...
  24. Does anyone know if methilyn (brand name of Ritalin) is gluten free? I take my prescribed 10mg dose to help me focus through my swim practices (too many numbers to keep track of) and university courses. I've always had a bit of a reaction to them but I thought it was just my IBS: I get mild spasms when I take it on an empty stomach or too soon after breakfast...
  25. Thanks for the welcome. Alabama isn't really hilly, the highest point is just over 2400ft (730m). I had a fluoroscopy for my colon spasms and to check for Crohns when I was diagnosed with IBS a few years ago, and that came out clear. Auto-immune disorders run rampant on my mom's side but we all have different ones, so mine is celiacs. As to "why...
