  1. I think that Enterolab fills a need for a lot of people who have run out of options. If you have biopsy-positive, or even blood positive celiac, all that it took for you to get an answer was those tests. Mind you, it probably took years or even decades. But you've got a solid, concrete answer. But there are so many of us here who don't have any...
  2. My MIL and I are definitley at odds as far as how we experience life. She doesn't understand how I can go through a week and not exercise (she is in her mid-late 50's and still plays soccer twice a week and volleyball once a week). On the other side, I can't see how anyone can go through a week without researching something. She mentioned once when...
  3. Before I went gluten-free, I couldn't have cared less about chocolate cake. Didn't like it. At all. Brownies either. Too much cakey chocolate going on. Add in chocolate frosting? OMG. Gross... I'd eat it to be polite if someone gave it to me, but that's it. My best friend's son's birthday party is tomorrow and he's having chocolate cake with...
  4. That's so great... My husband went through the same thing. In Oct '05 he accused me of being a hypochondriac and said that he was starting to worry that I needed a psychiatrist. He got very upset and said that he was really very concerned about my mental health. This was a month and a half after I found this board. By Valentine's Day, he stopped...
  5. Courtney - definitely make sure that multivitamin, and any other supplements you take are gluten-free. Other than that, it can take a while to heal. You'll have ups and downs. Today, I was totally snappy with my daughter. I'm 99.99989% sure I haven't been glutened, but my gosh I was snippy today. I think it was an actual MOOD. Miss Cooking...
  6. I'm so sorry that your aunt is going through this. I agree with your mom. We have a saying in my family. We can get used to anything but dead. Your aunt still should absolutely and always be encouraged to have every feeling that she's feeling while she's going through this. It's the suppressing of it that really can mess with you. When she...
  7. Wow. She sounds wonderful. What a sweetheart to do all that. I can see how you don't want her to be offended or hurt. Approach it like a team effort. Tell her that you think he might be getting glutened somehow, or may be reacting to some other food. Ask for her help. You might want to have her watch for reactions for something you might think...
  8. Not a dumb question at all. The thing is that it takes a very, very small amount of gluten to get a reaction. In the case of body wash, it can be the spray from the shower that bounces off the shower curtain or door misting back onto your lips. Then the residue from the gluten dries on your lips. When you eat, the gluten comes off on your food when...
  9. My husband and I went to Europe several years ago (his mom still has family there). He had just gotten a new camera and was very "remote control" about it. He refused to take ONE picture that didn't have people, mostly me, in front of it. Nancy in front of Heidelberg Castle. Nancy in front of the Louvre. Nancy in front of Notre Dame. Beautiful...
  10. Wow Jerry. A man of many talents. I used to do photography a little bit. My favorite thing to do was when there was a party outside, to walk a long way off, use my huge-mongous zoom lens and just shoot pictures of people. They completely forget you're there and the expressions and conversations you can capture are so genuine. It completely blows...
  11. Oo. Heath bars are gluten-free? I'm trying to find a new favorite candy bar now that Butterfinger and I don't get along anymore. I haven't had a Heath bar in years. Those recipes all sound so good. Thanks for posting them. Nancy
  12. When I was waiting for all my testing to be done, I just experiemented with different gluten-free foods so I would know what I liked when I went gluten-free. Also, read a lot here and learn as much as you can so you can go gluten-free when your biopsy is over. Nancy
  13. Enterolab does gene testing by cheek swab, and will test for the gluten intolerant genes as well as the celiac ones. Most people will have either two celiac genes, two gluten intolerant genes or one of each. The genes are found in most people, but not everyone develops problems with gluten. The gene test is $150. You can contact them and ask if they...
  14. By the way, the doctor who wrote that article that mftnchn linked to is Dr. Scott Lewey, one of the most well-known celiac doctors in the country. Nancy
  15. That is really horrible that the Celiac Foundation said that. It is controversial because they haven't published their work yet, but a SCAM??? That's a horrible thing to say. I'm stunned. Not having pre-existing on my kids med charts is a big reason I went through them too. Enterolab just helped me know that I was barking up the right...
  16. Yea, they're a real mess in that regard. I have learned not to tell them anything personal and keep things as "surface" as I can. The really good part about them is that they're really wonderful about me and the kids being gluten-free, and have me verify ingredients and read labels to make sure our food is safe. They're the only ones I trust to cook...
  17. A couple months ago my husband brought up some valid points when it comes to whether or not our daughter needs to be gluten-free. Long story short is that I agreed to do a gluten challenge on her before she starts kindergarten. I decided to not tell her that we were doing this, or give her any obvious gluten, only having to probably take it away later...
  18. --> QUOTE(Lola B @ May 18 2007, 09:05 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oh my goodness - if what you're saying about Hidden Valley is accurate, then my mystery might be solved. I've been glutening my own child by giving her carrots and Hidden Valley dressing to dip them in. I read all of the ingredients on the label and assumed (incorrectly) that it was safe...
  19. Yea. Where's your picture? I think everyone should have a picture up. Wait. Crap. Never mind. Pretend you didn't see me. Nancy
  20. We use Heinz all the time. I guess from the standpoint of doctors and nutritionists, it's better to tell you that too many things need to be avoided than to leave something off the list. I came across a recent post that someone said they had headaches and GI issues after trying Hidden Valley. Drat. Hopefully they'll re-formulate someday. ...
  21. Now THAT is a phrase you should put in your signature line. Seriously. That's my theory too. With all the hoops we have to jump through, why complicate things. I'm going to get the Loreal conditioner to try. Thanks Jin! Nancy
  22. #6 - They ask you how to spell celiac. Nancy
  23. You don't have to avoid vinegar for the most part. That's old information, but there are some vinegars you do have to avoid. Apple cider flavored vineger can have gluten (regular apple cider vinegar should not). Malt vinegar is not gluten-free, malt is barley. Honestly, dieticians and nutritionists are generally not well-informed about celiac...
  24. There have been a couple different responses from them that I remember - (1) Hidden Valley Ranch doesn't always use the same type of starch in their modified food starch. So they won't guarantee the source. You kind of end up with a Russian Roullette situation. It can be fine for a long time, and then all of a sudden it can make you sick as a dog. (...
  25. YAY!!!! Thanks for posting that. Gotta love the PubMed. Nancy
