ARCHIVED Swelling Of Ankles And Hands?
bluelotus replied to Mjohnson73's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't get the swelling, but I do get sore joints - esp. my ankles and knees. I remember seeing a physical therapist years prior to celiac disease diagnosis and she couldn't figure out what was up with my ankle (usually my left one that is most bothersome, kind of weird that it is not symmetrical). Anyway, nice to know that I wasn't the only one with... -
ARCHIVED Generic Medical Question - Allergies
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I went to my doctor (general physician) - he didn't even know how to spell celiac....scary. But, at least he admitted his ignorance and refered me to an allergist, who I will see on Monday. Do you all have any advice on suggested tests? Would a skin test be able to pick up the fact that I can't digest certain proteins (like corn)? Or is that more for... -
ARCHIVED Just Tested For Celiac Disease...
bluelotus replied to jajus100's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Probably b/c the tests aren't sensitive enough to small amounts of gluten in your system - this will likely cause a smaller immune system reaction (though maybe not less symptoms on your part). That's my understanding anyway.....hope its correct and I don't end up confusing anyone. -
No. people really are that stupid. I had one guy stunned b/c he saw me eating shrimp. How can I eat shrimp if I can't eat gluten? What!?! Its depressing....and it has changed my perspective on how intelligent people in general are.

ARCHIVED Generic Medical Question - Allergies
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks to you all for the replies - things are starting to make a bit more sense. I just wish that these allergies would go away after our systems healed and that we weren't at greater risks of developing more, even after going gluten-free. Right after I started my diet, I was fine with all foods except gluten....then I started reacting to milk (2 months... -
That's great! Thanks for representing our needs to a new group of people!

Two things - 1) stay away from Nioxin. It has wheat in it and it is expensive. I used it for a while, didn't notice any regrowth or lessened loss (had used it for a year+) and got headaches from the wheat. I am no doctor, so if it is something you are interested in, by all means, but I'd just be careful. 2) I haven't heard of soy or dairy causing hair...

ARCHIVED Cosmetics-shampoos, Etc
bluelotus replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Let me just start by saying the sense of community in this forum is great. I've learned a lot (and I already considered myself a know-it-all) and I've felt comforted by the fact that others go through what I go through. I have a really hard time going out to eat, or for the topic of this discusssion, going to salons and asking for specifics. Its not... -
I am in atlanta too and have never eaten out here, so I appreciate the tips as well.

ARCHIVED I'm The Only One :(
bluelotus replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
thanks for the great pdf. others were talking about the inheritance of this disease a week or so ago and I tried to explain that most genes, and most diseases, are not inherited in the typical recessive fashion (very different from what they tell you in high school bio.) and that even having a gene for something doesn't mean you will get it. genes don't... -
Coming from a science background, I ask a lot of questions myself and have always wondered about this. What is in a smell? If you are at the in-laws, a restaurant, whatever, and "smell" bread, isn't that in itself a particle? But what kind of particle is it and what is in the particle? It scared me one day while I was at Panera Bread with my husband ...

No, I have moved several times since then and figured she (the derm) was full of it anyway. I will be seeing a regular physican this week and hope to get recommendations for a dermatologist, allergist, etc. I realized that by her trying to put me on everything available, she really didn't know what the h#ll was going on and likely wasn't going to find out...

I guess it would depend on if they cooked it in broth or water - the safest thing to do is ask. I hate having to ask stuff though and always feel like I am being a pain, so I just stopped going out. Hope you have better luck than I do.

Do you know how they diagnose Hashimoto's thyroiditis specifically? I was told I have "hypothyroidism" (diagnosis made prior to them realizing I had celiac disease), but with celiac disease, I wouldn't be suprised if it is autoimmune related.

LRgirl, is your hair loss spotty? is that why your derm. was able to inject in one spot and why you use a steroid cream?? just wondering..... when I first went to a derm at age of 21 for hair loss (yes, waited almost a year before seeing someone), she put me on every imaginable medicine - rogaine, steroid, vitamins, etc. the steroid shampoo made me...

I am 23 and my hair started falling out when I was 20 (around the same time as my "bathroom" symptoms really began to take off). Unfortuneately, I don't have much advice, though I would say stay away from rogaine....its crap. I used the womens variety for about 2 years and I don't think it did anything (and, if you look closely, it says regrowth only lasts...

ARCHIVED Fda Docket: 2005n-0279 Food Labeling Gluten Free
bluelotus replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just posted my comment as well - let's all keep our fingers crossed that we have just improved the quality of our lives and will now be able to make better/less time consuming food choices! Wow, if I can go a few days without calling a company, I wouldn't know what to do with my free time!! -
ARCHIVED Ham
bluelotus replied to BRCoats's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hormel would be the easiest to find, but Wellshire farms makes great gluten-free hams. They have a website and you can order directly from them. Some stores, like Harry's and Wholefoods carry this brand as well. Good luck. Soup is so great for our lunches! -
ARCHIVED Reaction
bluelotus replied to joyce's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you talking about lundenberg farm bbq rice chips? I used to eat those all the time and never reacted to those (though that doesn't mean much). Then I noticed that I seemed sensitive to corn, and being that those chips are mostly corn, I had to stop eating them..... Not that this information helps much, but I wouldn't place my bets on gluten being in... -
I, like a lot of celiacs, have a ravenous appetite. So, most of the time, I need something "thicker", so to speak, in the morning than fruit. I will make pancakes that aren't very sweet (like a flat bread) ahead of time to last for the week. I then will cook a Wellshire farm sausage (they also have chicken) morning breakfast patty in the microwave (about...

ARCHIVED Bacon?
bluelotus replied to mdono's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry, forgot to mention that Wellshire farms makes a turkey bacon as well...their meats are very good, but can be a bit expensive. I too have heard that Oscar Meyer is gluten-free, so they are always a cheaper fall-back. -
Thanks to both of you for the ideas, maybe I will try to keep some cooking utensils seperate for gluten-free cooking as well as a skillet or two. This is just so frustrating (as I am sure everyone already knows).....

ARCHIVED Bacon?
bluelotus replied to mdono's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wellshire farms has yummy bacon....they have a website which you can order from. Also, some stores, like whole foods and harry's carry this brand. -
I was wondering how everyone copes with being gluten-free in an "non-gluten-free" household. I am married (just moved in with my husband recently), without children, and have been doing the gluten-free diet since last Nov, with a few mistakes. I have been cautious about the obvious and not-so obvious gluten sources (soaps, lotions, toothpastes, etc.), but...

ARCHIVED Which Do You Use?
bluelotus replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use all-natural, 100% maple syrup. Some chains (like Kroger and Walmart) will carry these, but they are expensive ~$10 a bottle.
