ARCHIVED Come And Rant!
bluelotus replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah. I have had people comment (knowing I have celiac disease) that people with wheat "allerigies" (as they think of it) are genetically inferior and shouldn't reproduce. What the..... !!!! Nice. Then others will say things like, "I don't understand how someone could be so allergic to something" (as if it was my fault, first; second, I am not allergic... -
I am so sorry that happened to you, but I completely understand. Not only do you miss the obvious ingrediants, but it is so easy to justify eating something with ingrediants that don't sound alarm bells ("well, spices wouldn't have wheat, they'd have to say that".......mistake). I've been there so many times. I am in the process of writing a paper for...

Hi, I study population genetics and most genes don't follow that "typical" recessive path that we are taught in basic bio....very few do. Most genes interact with one another, exacerbating or negating various conditions. Certain conditions aren't determined by one gene either, but by the presence/absence of many. That is why things like cancer are so...

ARCHIVED Feeling Bad In Russia
bluelotus replied to RussCourt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree about eliminating bread, maybe replace it with potatoes, rice, etc....those are pretty tummy friendly. Also, avoid soy sauce and some of the more obvious sources of wheat (ex. blue cheese, sausages/mixed meats). That should help. I have no idea about international shipping, esp. of food products, but you may want to check out Ener-G online, Bob... -
ARCHIVED Pam Cooking Spray-grain Alcohol....gluten Free?
bluelotus replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My pam bottle specifies that it is a corn based alcohol - it says this in parentheses (sp?) after mentioning grain alcohol. -
Ha...I like the soap analogy...funny. I would agree - cross contamination issues - they need to be careful about what food they've touched prior to preparing a gluten-free dish, watch where they cut their fruit and veggies (was bread just sitting on that counter on that exact spot??), make sure that they mix a gluten-free salad seperately from others...

ARCHIVED Can Anyone Reccommend...
bluelotus replied to sb4480's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Collective Wellbeing for fine hair - a bit pricey (sp?), but has a nice organic, herbal smell and it is vitamin fortified as well. Some hairstylists I know say not to use Pantene b/c they add waxes to their shampoos, which will weaken hair overtime. Sorry to be critical of that shampoo, but if it works for some, great. Hope that helps! -
ARCHIVED La Choy Soy Sauce
bluelotus replied to knvb78's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just for anyone's fyi - I mentioned Bali Spice above. I think this brand of soy sauce made me sick (though the ingrediants didn't sound any alarms), so I called them and could not get a straight answer out of them. They said that they didn't have that information and the only people that did were in Indonesia. I also had this topic going in the Ingrediants... -
ARCHIVED Bali Spice Soy Sauce
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Called Bali Spice people, and the people in the US deal with selling it, they really have no information on ingrediants, etc, saying that that info was in Indonesia and they couldn't get it for me. Nice. So, guess they are out as a soy sauce (esp. since I am still sick, five days after eating it.....likely I was glutened). The sauce was too salty anyway... -
ARCHIVED Cosmetics-shampoos, Etc
bluelotus replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with the last comment and I take offense to the comment about being an extremeist. I'd like to think of myself as just owing up to my health condition and being careful. I was using a shampoo which (I was unaware) had wheat in it. I was getting headaches all the time.....I checked the shampoo as a last resort and when I stopped using it, my headaches... -
ARCHIVED B12/iron Deficiency & Acne !
bluelotus replied to Evonneda's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Forgot to mention that dairy seems to be a frequent culprit of skin problems as well. I think there was even a short article about this on MSNBC's website about 6 months ago. -
ARCHIVED B12/iron Deficiency & Acne !
bluelotus replied to Evonneda's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My skin got very bad for a while (as did my other symptoms) right before I was diagnosed. Prior to seeing a doctor, I began using Proactiv, and, though it may seem cheesy, it really helped, though it took a few months (and ruined some sheets and towels b/c of the peroxide in it). About 5 months after going on Proactiv, I was diagnosed with celiac disease... -

ARCHIVED Carnival Cruises--accomodating To Celiacs?
bluelotus replied to augie's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Sorry for the confusion. Nope, it was their dining room....I didn't eat at any of their restuarants (I thought it would be easier that way, not having to explain my situation to someone new every time). Hope this helps and enjoy your cruise! -
Appendicitis And Gluten/wheat Sensitivity
bluelotus replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you all want an to read an interesting case of appendicitis - I had my appendectamy when I was 20 and diagnosed with celiac disease when I was 23 (though no doctor ever tied the two togther and no doctor ever thought of celiac disease, even with my other symptoms; I had to ask to be tested). Anyway, the night before, my undergraduate advisor asked me... -
ARCHIVED I'm An Idiot - Feel Free To Tell Me Off.
bluelotus replied to nadinec's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree, seems I have gotten more sensitive over time as well. Also, as others have mentioned, I would consider other allergens or intolerances - for me it seems to be dairy, eggs, and corn.....and it seems that I add another food group to this list every few months. -

ARCHIVED Chapstick
bluelotus replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just called them and they asked which kinds I wanted to know about since they have to look up each one individually (they have over 15 kinds!!). So I just asked about the basic ones - called Classics - that is, the original, mint, cherry, strawberry, etc. They said of the classics are gluten-free. This info used to be on this website (under gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED I Think I Just Screwed Up
bluelotus replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not entirely gluten-free related, I have celiac disease and have apparently developed a corn allergy. I've only been on a corn free diet for a week, so still getting used to it. I was making soup last night and dumped in a bag of frozen vegies....not even thinking....tons of corn in it. Nice. At least my husband can eat it.... -

I used to have eye problems too - when I was in junior high to nineth grade (less than 10 years ago), I would get blurry vision in my periphery. Sometimes it would move around my eye, but most of the time it was just to the sides. This happened infrequently, but it scared my mother and doctors enough that they gave me a catscan, finding nothing unusal,...

ARCHIVED Generic Medical Question - Allergies
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I appreciate your response and you putting some thought into my question(s), as I do tarnalberry. I am hoping to have a general physical in the next month or so, maybe I can find a decent doctor and he/she will be able to answer this question regarding general allergies. (I've been so angry and disappointed with dr.'s in the past and their lack of knowledge... -
ARCHIVED Sugar
bluelotus replied to Felidae's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do you have Domino sugar in Canada? I emailed them in April 2005 for my own interest, wondering if they used gluten in their caramel coloring. They said that their coloring is gluten and corn free, they only use corn starch (which is safe) in their powedered sugar, and all of their sugars are gluten-free. Hope this helps!
