  1. Just saw my GI doctor and she confirmed my analysis. Celiac can definitely present itself as gluten sensitivity. It's not even really a case of being misdiagnosed - it's just that there isn't any damage to the villi yet. The only way to know for sure that it will not further develop into Celiac is to be tested for the genetic marker. But seeing how approx...
  2. A few possibilities come to mind... If you're eating too close to when you go to bed, or eat gas-producing food at dinner time, this can cause pain in the morning. If you are not getting enough sleep, this can actually throw off your metabolism and even affect your blood sugar levels, which can cause morning nausea, cramping, light headedness, etc. ...
  3. Just one point to add... it also depends on how healthy the person ate before and after going gluten free. Simply being gluten free does not equate to healthy. If the person ate like crap before the diagnosis then their body is likely to be weaker and more depleted and therefore take longer to heal. And if the person continues to eat like crap after going...
  4. Just one thing to add to all of the previous posts... many foods are naturally gluten-free and do not have to be labeled "Gluten Free". You can Google just about anything... "does chocolate have gluten?" and learn how to read the labels. The trickiest is the "malt" products that are made from Barley - they won't be labeled as having come from Barley (at...
  5. One thing that has really helped me is getting a good dose of easily digestable protein in the morning. I use Designer Whey protein powder, French Vanila flavor. It actually tastes good - even just mixed in water - doesn't have that weird chemical-like after-taste that you get with most protein powders, is certified gluten free, low sugar, and 18 grams...
  6. Salads aren't so bad if you add some nuts, and/or chicken, etc. to spruce them up. Also, not all dressings have gluten. I'm partial to Hidden Valley Ranch - certified gluten free. Newman's Own dressings do not have gluten (not sure if that is true of all varieties/flavors, but I know several of them are safe). You just have to read the labels carefully...
  7. Vit. D should be closer to 50. With muscle pain, magnesium and potassium come to mind. With general weakness, B vitamins such as a good B-complex comes to mind. Your "spaghetti legs" comment reminds me of how I felt when I had low blood sugar. Try making sure you get enough protein, in small amounts throughout the day - rather than trying to just eat...
  8. When I first asked my doctor to do the blood test for the antibodies she asked me "Why on earth would you want that?" - then I told her my uncle has celiac and she immediately ordered the test, even though I wasn't having any symptoms myself (other than early osteopenia). She hinted that if it weren't for the family-history, the health insurance would not...
  9. If you're still concerned about going Gluten-free with topical products, sensitive-skin Curel is Gluten-free - and I have found that it actually works really well (was using it for years before I even knew I had a gluten problem). Also, most Bare Minerials makeup is gluten-free, as is most Banana Boat sun screen. Check their websites for a list of specific...
  10. You may want to check with a doctor as far as which fats you can tolerate without a gallbladder. Are you eating real butter or margarine? Margarine is pretty nasty from an ease-of-digestion standpoint. If it is real butter, check the label and make sure there are no funky additives in it. As far as the cheese. I don't have issues with milk at all...
  11. 1. keep reminding yourself of the illnesses/symptoms that you are trying to avoid by going gluten free in the first place - your withdrawal symptoms will go away and if gluten was causing your previous issues, then they will be gone too 2. make sure you check on the sausage - some have fillers/additives/flavors that include either wheat or barley Good...
  12. Citric acid is safe. From glutenFreeLiving: Citric Acid This ingredient is gluten free. It is usually made from corn, beet sugar or molasses. Even when made from wheat, citric acid is so highly processed and purified that no gluten protein would remain.
  13. I'm not familiar with DH and have not seen your pics, so I don't know if this is similar, but a friend of mine has hidradenitis and recently discovered that avoiding gluten makes it go away. I don't believe the doctors have connected the two yet, but many who suffer from hidradenitis have.
  14. << In their cases, eating gluten won't give them celiac and may not even be the actual " cure".>> Absolutely correct. << No need to argue. >> I hope you didn't take my setting the record straight as an argument. It is important that people who have reason to believe they have gluten sensitivity understand the risks...
  15. So Celiac is an immune response that causes damage to the villi. But you can have Celiac but get a false-negative diagnosis because there isn't damage (or enough damage) to the villi... yet. So you get diagnosed with gluten sensitivity. But if you actually have undiagnosed Celiac, and you continue to eat gluten, then you are more likely to eventually have...
  16. This site also mentions that if you do not have the Celiac gene marker, then you cannot get Celiac – but you can still have Gluten Sensitivity. However, they do not have enough information to know for sure if someone with Gluten Sensitivity and the gene marker will get – or is more likely to get – Celiac. If I have non-celiac gluten sensitivity now, ...
  17. This is what I could find at my finger-tips. I'm sure there's more out there. Open Original Shared Link “It's not clear yet whether gluten sensitivity raises your risk for other conditions, including autoimmune conditions — some researchers believe that it does, and others say it does not.” (and of course, Celiac is an autoimmune condition) Ope...
  18. Actually... it depends on which doctors and which research you believe. Some believe the two are linked - others are waiting for confirming additional research. No, having gluten sensivity does not mean that you are guaranteed to get Celiac Disease. And some people get Celiac Disease without having any symptoms of gluten sensitivity first. But there is...
  19. I start every morning with Whey Protein - I use the Designer Whey brand, French Vanilla flavor (available from the Vitamin Shoppe and some Target stores). It is very low sugar, no added "crap" in it, and whey is often even tolerated by dairy-intolerant people. It kick-starts the metabolism and really sticks with me - keeping various cravings at bay for...
  20. Good point KarenG - I look at gluten intolerance/sensitivity as the precursor to Celiac Disease. Similar to hypoglycemia being the precursor for diabetes. If you nip the precursor, you don't get the next stage of the disease. So as a gluten interant person, if you avoid gluten then you avoid the disorder evolving into the next stage - which is Celiac Disease...
  21. Janey - I was recently diagnosed with gluten intolerance and did not have any obvious symptoms - but it does run in my family. Eating gluten when you have gluten intolerance has been scientifically linked to diabetes, thyroid problems, severe skin problems, certain kinds of cancer, hair loss, osteoperosis, and a long list of other ailments. So yes,...
  22. BelleVie - I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that... getting emotional at work, for any reason, is always humiliating. I'm no doctor, but just wanted to throw this out there... I was having weird spells of uncharacteristic anger and rage too. I'd wake up ready to kill. For no apparent reason. This was before my celiac diagnosis, so I didn...
  23. Thanks Kareng - I did think of that... but just can't bring myself to eat something I know is doing internal damage. From what I've read, I would also be very surprised if the damage that has already been done were to disappear within just a few weeks - does anyone know if this is even possible? I do plan to re-do the blood test in 6 months or so to see...
  24. Tonalyn - I'm newly diagnosed and going through some adjustment as well. I haven't braved eating out yet. But given that you have Hashimoto's, fatigue, depression, and insomnia - it doesn't sound like you've been asymptomatic at all. Just undiagnosed. Try to look at it this way... once you get the gluten out of your body, the things that you're doing...
  25. Hi Everyone - I'm new at the gluten-free thing, having just been diagnosed 10 days ago (not officially, just by blood test). But I haven't touched a spec of gluten in those 10 days. I have had several of these types of conversations though. I brought 3 unopened boxes of cereal into the office that I had just bought before finding out that I couldn...
