  1. Hi Sue If you possibly can, I would agree with Scott and would encourage you to try to hang in there and consume gluten until the test. I think a couple of slices of normal bread a day or similar would normally be recommended, but as much as you can possibly can tolerate. There are benefits from having a formal coeliac diagnosis in the UK - you...
  2. This is very interesting. I didn't know oats and soya could aggravate DH.
  3. Yes... I googled an exact US alternative to golden syrup and several sites says there isn't one! However, I gather you can buy it in certain stores in the US. The brand you need for an authentic British flapjack is Lyles Golden Syrup. Sorry... going slightly off piste with this Oats thread!
  4. I reckon you are right there. One thing I ought to add is sometimes I think pain can be to do with the inablility to tolerate a certain sort of fibre content in the short term, while the gut is healing. I had the very same sore stomach when I ate lentils after diagnosis, so I had to give them up. I reintroduced them a few months after going...
  5. RMJ - thank you so much. I find the whole oat question so interesting. Strange thing is I had absolutely no pain eating oats until I adopted a gluten free diet, and ate them all day long those days .
  6. 😊 RMJ - I wish I had your brain! Can you tell me, this T cell response etc, are they saying there was actual villous blunting as a result of consuming oats? It's late here in the UK and I'm reading this and finding all of this a bit complicated.
  7. Dave, this is something I would like to know as I've never been able to find this out. All I can say is about three months ago I found I could eat oats (pure, certified gluten free) again seemingly without pain and probably rather overdid it. Then, a month later, the burning stomach and neuro symptoms (muscle twitching) started up. There could of course...
  8. No problem at all. And thanks for sending that link - yes, it's funny you should send that as I vaguely recall a few threads on this website which mentioned tTg tests being affected by other autoimmune conditions. But as you think it is unlikely it is caused by these, it does sound as if coeliac may well be responsible. I hope the testing goes...
  9. Hi Hulia I think in your shoes - this is just my personal opinion and I should say I don't know anything about the reliability of home testing - I'd be inclined to get a blood test from a GP, as you will get to know how abnormal your test was. This can then be used as a benchmark to show how well you are recovering when you adopt a gluten free diet...
  10. Hi Hulia Do send that link, as trents says, it's fine for that kind of thing. But out of interest, where did you get tested for coeliac disease? Was it a test you sent off for or at your doctors' surgery? Cristiana
  11. Many, many thanks for keeping us updated. I'm a so glad a that a few important things have been ruled out already but my heart goes out to you both at this really challenging time. I hope that the treatment brings relief. Just one very important thing - crazy as it sounds, make sure the endoscopy will include checking for coeliac disease as I...
  12. https://www.nigella.com/recipes/guests/regula-ysewijns-flapjacks This looks like a good recipe. I'd advise to stick to oats - don't use spelt - and also forget about the chocolate chips. Your first flapjack should be unadulterated. If you slightly undercook them or add a bit more syrup (I think in the States it's called light treacle?...
  13. Hi Hulia Welcome to the forum! Can you post your results for us. There are different tests taken, it would be good to know which you had. Cristiana
  14. I think of porridge as oats cooked with water and salt (if one is Scottish) or milk and sugar (if one isn't!) At least, that is what we call it in this house. The thing that I do wonder about is what you Americans call flapjacks. Flapjacks in the UK are oats added to melted butter, brown sugar andgolden syrup etc to make a sort of oatey biscuit. Absolutely...
  15. I am so sorry she is having such a rough time. I really hope you will both get the answers you need very soon.
  16. Just read Wheatwacked's post. If you want your GP to check for this ask for a CA125 blood test, and even if the levels return as normal and your wife continues to feel bloated usually GPs are pretty good at referring patients for a a transvaginal ultrasound to rule out anything to do with the ovaries. You can always ask for this for peace of mind...
  17. Hi Layla Easy to say (because I panic about every new symptom), but try not to panic.😊 I get a tickle deep in my throat when I've been doing a lot of dusting. Is that the symptom you have? Or something else? Sneezing? Itchy eyes? It would be normal to react to the dust if you haven't done a bit of deep cleaning in a while. And I don't know ho...
  18. Hi RMJ I haven't been able to eat them for years but started again in the spring. Initially all OK - but overdid things, and then got gastritis type symptoms and twitching muscles. I have no idea if it is the oats or whether something else is responsible so I'll be interested to see if my antibodies have gone up. I am so glad most coeliacs can eat...
  19. Hi Rebecca I was told to avoid oats for six months when I was diagnosed here in the UK. But then again the advice may be different for children. About ten per cent of coeliacs react to avenin, the protein in oats, and therefore cannot even eat the pure variety. Unfortunately I appear to be one of the unfortunate coeliacs in this position. ...
  20. I have been googling morning nausea and it seems there's quite a bit out there about it. There are a few mentions of gastritis. I wonder if your wife might have gastritis? A friend of mine suffers from gastritis and she feels terrible first thing, before she has eaten. I suffer from gastritis too and more recently if my stomach is acting up I can...
  21. Does your wife have accompanying stomach pain with this nausea, or is it more like a the sort of nausea one feels if one is seasick?
  22. Great advice from Trents. I'd just like to add, your wife probably won't have any problem obtaining blood tests at this time, so you may wish to get blood tests done in any case. The endoscopy may take a while longer than normal but your NHS hospital may not have too long a waiting list at the moment compared with others. In any case, it may be that if...
  23. Hi again Great advice from Ravenswood. Also just to let you know that my nutritionalist saw a lady who had been told by her doctor that she had MS. No one had checked for coeliac disease so at the nutritionalist's advice these tests were done, and indeed she did have coeliac disease instead! My nutritionalist also went onto say that some of...
  24. Hi there... I believe a new thread has been created (possibly by a fellow moderator, or yourself?) which is a good idea. I wonder if you could post your latest comment onto that thread and I will answer on that, to avoid getting the threads getting in a tangle! Thanks! Cristiana This seems to be the new thread. https://www.celiac.com/forums...
  25. Hello Robsimonroberts Welcome to the forum, but I am sorry to hear your wife is going through so much. I live in the UK so sympathise as the NHS is under a great deal of pressure at the moment and it is a difficult time to be going through this medical uncertainty. My own diagnosis took some time. This is not uncommon among coeliacs! I was finally...
