ARCHIVED Gluten-free Hypoglycemia Diet?
tarnalberry replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
they can do fasting blood sugar tests, which are generally run at every physical. I also test out as low-normal (I'm on the very low end of the normal scale), but the symptoms fit to a T, and my doctor said " regardless of the tests, you're essentially hypoglycemic. treat it that way." if it's that "mild" (clinically), then there's not a lot you need to... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Hypoglycemia Diet?
tarnalberry replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
you don't necessarily have to cut out all carbs or sugars if you're hypoglycemic. a lot of it depends on how sensitive you are. it also means that no one can give you a diet to follow, you have to find out for yourself what works for you. read labels, and look up the nutritional information of things that don't have labels. (the Open Original Shared Link... -
ARCHIVED Washington Post Article
tarnalberry replied to katebuggie28's topic in Publications & Publicity
While I think that there is too much use of pharmaceuticals in this country, if not the world, I think that there's an equally strong backlash against it by some segments of the population, for the sake of the backlash, and not borne out of logic. We didn't invent infections after antibiotics came along. We didn't invent bi-polar after lithium came along... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Hypoglycemia Diet?
tarnalberry replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
the two diets are actually really compatible, if you don't eat a lot of specialty gluten subs. lower your carb intake, particularly balancing carbs with protein and fat (and fiber) at each meal. fruits and veggies with protein and fiber are important for this, for instance. (sweet potatoes and even waxy potatoes being better than russet potatoes, as one... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Convincing Brother To Get Tested.
tarnalberry replied to Bravie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
if you can commit to making him *GOOD* meals for a month, and being there for him, food wise and socially, for that whole month, (and if the bet doesn't work ), ask him, "will you just give it a try, if I make the hard part of it easy for you? just try it to prove me wrong? one month, see if it makes any difference in your symptoms, and then I'll stop... -
ARCHIVED This So Totally Pissed Me Off!
tarnalberry replied to loco-ladi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
you can't. not legally. because saying that requires you be able to test it. not logically infer it. but empirically test it. since the tests can't get that low, it can't be said. -
ARCHIVED Just Looking For Someone To Listen
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, I think his expectations may have to change too. He seems to have some particular ones as well. Have you guys agreed to keep the cupboards a particular way? Have you guys agreed that you'll do a particular amount of housework? Have you guys agreed that you'd do certain things, be a certain way? My husband and I had a lot of unspoken assumptions... -
someone on the board actually called the only major manufacturer of adhesive for envelope glue, and nope - doesn't contain gluten. from all the checking up on it that's been done, it appears to be an urban legend. of course, it's a very easy thing to avoid - use a sponge, use a damp paper towel, use your finger (just once, of course!). I still avoid licking...

ARCHIVED This So Totally Pissed Me Off!
tarnalberry replied to loco-ladi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
we've had a number of discussions about this in the past, and I'm sure that a search will find some of them. the short of it is that a label statement called out by a law like that has to be testable. "absolutely no gluten" is not a testable (or even scientific) number. so, there was a fair amount of time put into determining what number was testable at... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed--scared, Confused
tarnalberry replied to canadave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you are going through is TOTALLY normal. I mean, who - if they don't have this in their family - ever thinks about wheat being *bad and scary* when they're growing up?! It's a full-on grieving process (those five stages, you know?) to go through. And it's cyclic, so it's not like you do it once, and BAM! you're done. But you'll get to feeling better... -
ARCHIVED Just Looking For Someone To Listen
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
lazy is relative. I urge you to banish it from your vocabulary unless you are using it to measure it against your own true DESIRES, not your own EXPECTATIONS. if you *WANT* to sit and read all day, and that's what you do, you're not lazy, you're quite productive! (assuming that you haven't let your house *literally* fall on your head, but if you don't... -
I'll get back to you with the sort of stuff I generally take backpacking with me on Monday (long weekend this weekend, and got home late tonight )

ARCHIVED Just Looking For Someone To Listen
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
when I read your post, I see expectations screaming out at me. whose expectations are they? what does it matter if some of those expectations aren't met? (if you get an F in life for not having a clean house, please give me my F now, 'cause I'm not sure that's a test worth passing.) ok, that parenthetical really is my point, I suppose. particularly... -
ARCHIVED Need Breakfast Ideas -- Gfcfsf
tarnalberry replied to Greeneyes4950's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
my most common breakfasts (that don't include eggs): quinoa flakes w/ flax meal and fruit spread (for flavor/sweetness), made with water quinoa flakes w/ almond meal w/ agave or honey and cinnamon made with almond or soy milk rice cakes (Lundberg farms) and peanut butter fruit smoothie (I don't even use a milk sub most of the time) made with whole... -
what sort of facilities are you going to be having at your camp? when I first read the question, I was thinking backpacking (which is what I do), but thought car camping was a possibility. now it seems it might be at an established camp with buildings, and maybe facilities? what will you have available to you?

ARCHIVED How Easy Is It To Travel Gluten Free In The U.s?
tarnalberry replied to amber's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Disneyland is easy to eat gluten free at - they'll take care of you. While mainstream stores don't tend to have specialty gluten free stuff, you can get non-specialty stuff (fruits, vegetables, eggs, meats, rice, corn, etc.) there. And there are *LOTS* of health food stores (besides Whole Foods), like Mother's Market and smaller mom-and-pop places, that... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Antibiotic Cure?
tarnalberry replied to Ali82's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
potatoes and tomatoes are in the nightshade family, and belladonna (deadly nightshade) *way* back when, turned people off to eating potatoes and tomatoes for fear they were also poisonous. they are in the same family, but they aren't poisonous. (unless, of course, you get too many unripe potatoes and ingest too much solanine... ) -
I'd wager that most people probably did learn it, and forgot. They had other things to learn about. Just like they learned about math things they don't use any more that I maintain that they "should" know, but they forgot about. And just like they learned geography and history that they forgot about (as is proven by surveys about where people think countries...

ARCHIVED Yellow Hands And Feet
tarnalberry replied to parla's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
if it's palms, feet, and armpits - not mucous membranes - chances are less likely it's jaundice. too much vit A can cause the problem as well, and many other things. has your doctor completely dismissed the symptom, or did you not specifically mention the worry of that symptom itself? have you gone to another doctor about it? what has been looked into... -
ARCHIVED Can Celiac Bloodwork Change?
tarnalberry replied to momto1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
blood work can change for a number of reasons. here are four that apply to your case: 1. tests in children under two are unreliable and generate false negatives at a higher than normal rate 2. celiac isn't "on" from birth - it can develop at any age; tests before that will be negative, after will be positive 3. tests from different labs use different... -
Yeah, and people don't truly, in the big picture, get along just fine eating processed foods, not getting out and getting exercise every day and getting some sun every day. But I don't in any way getting all worried that people are ignorant for eating things than come out of a box and have more than four ingredients - or, heaven forbid, they can heat up...

ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn
tarnalberry replied to Tyria's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
you can use regular popcorn in a brown paper bag, staple it twice (at least three inches apart) and microwave until you hear the popping die down (depends on the microwave... play with it...). -
you can do it without getting any additional lights, just start turning off/down the lights in your own house along with the light conditions outside (or, if you're in the north like I am, maybe a little earlier ). don't have a bright living room at 9pm. don't watch a bright tv at 10pm. help your body adjust. the eyes are a major input to the circadian...

it looks like the site was resized for a minimum resolution of 1200x1024. I agree that it's unfortunate, as I have both a 14" and 12" laptop that don't display anything larger than 1024x768 (which, afaik, is still the web standard for min resolution). but I'm unaware of anything you can do about the display of the website. it may be the forum software...
