  1. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Wild Oats are in the area. There's the common PF Changs, Outback, InNOut, Chili's, and fast food spots. Additionally, there's all kinds of crazy vegetarian, vegan, raw food, ethnic food, and other types of places - often places where it's easy to find out exactly what's in the food and have it made specially for you. (Not...
  2. Take a look through the abstracts on pubmed.com for the research evidence you need. The answer boils down to "many celiacs don't react to uncontaminated oats, but uncontaminated oats pretty much only happen if you grow them in an isolate laboratory, and there's still a subset of celiacs (~10-20%?) who do react to them".
  3. gluten-free toilettries is a personal call - one that I choose to answer by keeping them gluten-free. Makes me feel better, and that's what matters. I prefer Dove Shampoo/Conditioner (not combined, but the two of them), though I've also used Pantene in the past. As for lotions, I don't use a lot, but what I use is either Neutrogena products (gotta love...
  4. A positive result on the diet IS a diagnostic test, just one that takes a while and that you do in your own home.
  5. Zojirushi makes a rice maker - fuzzy logic rice maker - that's... insanely overpriced, or so it seems. (Its price tag is three digits... for a rice cooker... crazy!) Anyway... with being gluten-free, and my husband decided that he LIKES stir fry, we have lots of rice. And we both hated the stuff sticking at the bottom, and he didn't want to use the "pot...
  6. Here's the thing... gluten-free food doesn't taste nasty. Some of it does, but some does some non-gluten-free food too. You just have to figure out what you like. It's like going to a new country, new culture, with totally different food, and finding what you like and don't like. (It's harder, of course, because you can still SEE your old favorites.)...
  7. I thought I'd respond here, in case any one else finds the information useful, but feel free to PM me back with specific questions. What I have is vulvar vestibulitis. Basically - and here's your TMI warning ;-) - it causes burning pain in the vulvar vestibule (the area immediately outside the vagina itself, but at the entrance) either upon pressure,...
  8. On the yoga bit - there are a number of branches of yoga that do not offer a sustained aerobic workout, but there are some that do. (I still ain't a fan of Bikram, though. ;-) :-P No offense to those who enjoy the practice he designed; I just can't stand what he's trying to do - legally - with it. Blah... long story.) An interesting thing about yoga,...
  9. The splitting into smaller portions is a good idea. I find that I have a couple weaknesses, and use the following things depending on the situation: 1. grab a serving of the food, then go for a walk before having more 2. drink at least a cup of water, and waiting 10 minutes before having anything more 3. read this board before having anything 4. if...
  10. Yep, casein free, no really really nothing with dairy. (Sometimes people on here report that they've been told they can still have yogurt or cheese. Nu-uh. Casein is the protein in milk, and the process of making yogurt or cheese, while it does lower the levels of the milk sugar lactose because the bacterial enzymes or rennet consumes it in its metabolic...
  11. I missed this a while ago, but trader joe's has a number of unsulfered dried fruits - including mango. (yum!)
  12. Plain aloe is the best, BUT there have been studies that suggest it's better to let the skin peel, as the cells that are peeling off are the ones most damaged. (I know, it doens't look pretty. When I went skiing three weeks ago, I got a sunburn in my scalp line, 'cause it's hard to put lotion there, and it was too hot for a hat. (Hence the black headband...
  13. I have to go gluten-free and CF, which makes it a bit tougher. I tend to stick to Larabars, Organic Food Bars, and recently tried the ThinkOrganic bars. All are good. Of course, I prefer my homemade cranberry/hemp ones best. ;-)
  14. As celiac is not an allergy, but an IgG immune response, there is nothing you can do but wait it out.
  15. Health Valley Corn or Rice Crunch 'Ems and Blue Corn Flakes are good too. As is Kashi Cranberry Sunrise.
  16. You can pretty much grill anything. Steak's good for you in moderation, so's chicken, pork, fish, turkey, and vegetables. (Apparently you can grill some fruits as well. ;-) )
  17. I've never taken it. If constipation is a problem, consider adding a magnesium supplement - or evaluating if you're taking too much calicum without enough magnesium with it.
  18. I thought I'd pop back in and add that many folks struggling with a low-sex drive may find seeing a sex therapist helpful. I have a low sex drive not only from the low testosterone levels, but from a condition that causes sex to be very painful. While the condition is mostly controlled at this point (like celiac, nothing is "cured" but can be managed),...
  19. *begin fake admonshing voice meant to amuse you* abby, I'm afraid I'm going to have to correct you on that one. maybe you PREVIOUSLY had no clue, but now you have at least one or two clues! all that's left is decades of practice. *end fake voice* lol I couldn't resist. you've learned so much already! :-)
  20. No. Rye, barley, and oats are not considered common allergens.

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

I had something similar, but not quite so blatant occur, and I just naturally replied with "I don't care, whatever" with a look that was clearly "who cares?!" about the whole thing. It rather confused the person. ;-) haha!
  22. I don't do a lot of baking, but I go with the flours. It depends on how you bake, though.
  23. My opinion (physicist here, but I took a lot of p-chem and bio) is that you have celiac, and no, the blood tests are no longer going to show antibodies (there's got to be something there to react to). As for the still damaged villi - two options: 1) you are slow at healing; not everyone heals quickly, 2) something else is causing the enteropathy - there...
  24. Ooo... no no no on the Bikram. Well, I just am not a fan of the legal crap he's going through with other yoga instructors, or the concept of doing yoga in that kind of environment, but the cup of tea I don't like might just be the cup of tea for someone else. ;-) (I've been doing yoga for 4 years or so - mostly vinyasa - so I know it can get intense. You...
  25. Yep, I think some of us do that. It'll get better as you find more foods you can have, and get used to the diet. Give it time, and get out for a walk while eating those M&M's. ;-)
