  5. based solely on the antigliandin test coming back positive, I would encourage you to give the diet a good three month test drive. I say that because that test coming back positive means your body is producing antibodies to wheat protein (and not IgE antibodies, which would be a standard allergy). I'm not trying to say you really have celiac, just that the...
  6. darn... I wish I put on height after I went on the diet... 5"2' is tough to shop for - but hey, I can fit the cheaper childrens clothing. ;-)
  7. Bob's Red Mill. Ancient Harvest. Most of the prepared stuff is either: 1) not dairy free 2) too high in sugar 3) too low in protein 4) outrageously high in fat (12g for a hamburger bun?!) 5) not altogether that tasty for my tastes.
  8. Kaiti's got the list of tests there (IgA is so totally insufficient by itself!), and yeah, you're doc's a bit off by saying "oh, don't worry about it". I would suggest either educating him (if he's receptive) or getting a new doctor. That kind of "thinking" is very dangerous to your health. (*Won't affect you 'til you're 50* might mean you won't develop...
  9. You've got to check with the dentists office to find out what brand they use and the source of the ingredients. "Not swallowing" is insufficient. Of course SOME of it will get swallowed! ;-)
  10. Unfortunately, the ranchero sauce might have wheat in it - and you can't assume that the enchiladas don't either - you have to ask. I find that SIMPLE tacos (in corn tortillas) are often an option, if you leave off all sauces and the like. (Seasoned rice is iffy.) Chinese food - you have to ask, of course - often has dishes in a white sauce that's thickened...
  11. I remember reading about that, and thinking "ok, but is that particular chemical reaction going to finish to completion, and how do you know just how much of the enzyme you need to balance that mass equation". Usually, with lactase, as long as MOST of the lactose is split apart, it's sufficient not to cause any symptoms, but some people are so sensitive...
  12. Just wanted to throw in my additional support for blood testing before going gluten-free. You might consider a biopsy as well, just in case, but you don't have to.
  13. How was he initially diagnosed?
  14. I had dogs when I was younger, but didn't know about celiac disease then. One thing I realized, though, is that with small dogs, if money isn't the biggest of issues, you may be able to feed them "real" food instead of store bought dog food. I'm not how the nutrition requirements vary from humans to dogs, but a vet might be able to help you on that path...
  15. Going off the pill can help reduce yeast infections (estrogen in the body allows yeast to attach to tissue much more readily than without it, hence it's only menstrating women who regularly get yeast infections). Genitian violet - an old remedy for yeast infections before antifungals - can also be very effective, if very very messy (it stains everything...
  16. Yep, those gluten blues are ... "darn annoying", to put it lightly. I generally - during those times, and the nasty hormonal bits of the month - just try to turn off the "thinking about things" bit of my brain. Way harder done than said, I know, but I try to just focus on getting through the following few days before making much of anything of a decision...
  17. Turtle Mountain's Soy Delicious "non-dairy frozen desserts" are good too, though it varies by flavor. ;-) (The organic chocolate flavor is my favorite - good texture and taste.)
  18. I wonder if anyone has done an analysis on a wafer after it was "changed". (I'm an applied physicist by training - we think about testing things after every "change", so I'm not bringing this up in an intentionalyl sacriligeous way.) But it also leads me to the question - one unanswerable without a well funded study - for those who take communion, how...
  19. I understand you're hesitation on reintroducing gluten - particularly for the length of time necessary for the tests. Some doctors - though not too many - may accept positive results on the diet as being evidence enough. The only thing that really matters, though, is whether YOU think it's evidence enough, because you're the one who makes the dietary changes...
  20. The simple version I use "I can't have wheat, or anything made with it - like pasta, bread, sauces with flour. It'll make me very sick." I tend to avoid the word diet, because it has "implications" in our society today. I might use a term like "dietary restriction" or "food intolerance", but for the short version tend to stick with the phrase "will make...
  21. Some of it is different tastes, some of it is learning to cook the food in ways you find edible. (For instance, for the quinoa flakes, cook them until you think they're cooked, and I also don't like them plain - I always make them with soy milk, honey, vanilla, and cinnamon.) (I also don't like rice bread.) Give yourself some time to find the foods that...
  22. Pardon my skepticism, but it's bogus. (Though give me some accurate filming and I can tell you which way it'll spin because of the forces he's applying to the string... :-) )
  23. yep. they're right out of a gluten-free diet.
  24. Enterolab is the only one that looks for antibodies in the stool itself. Other labs do blood testing. Some doctors do not accept the results from Enterolab, because the stool testing method has not been peer reviewed and accepted by the mainstream medical community, but Dr. Fine is apparently working on publishing and researchers in Italy are also looking...
  25. Have they checked you for hypoglycemia or other bloodsugar issues?
