  1. Unfortunately, avoiding dairy can be just as tricky - if not harder - than avoiding gluten. Are you confident that you have eliminated all sources of lactose and casein? (Medications often have lactose, and many many things have casein in some form or another. In fact, if you're eating soy cheese, it's almost guaranteed that you aren't dairy free, because...
  2. Soy Delicious does make a very good chocolate non-dairy frozen soy dessert (gotta love the descriptor!) that is Gluten-free Casein-free that Trader Joe's carries. (I don't have it often since I'm struggling to lose the 6-8lbs I put back on this year (that I didn't need).)
  3. Since you are still experiencing problems, yes, I would stay away from items at risk for cross-contamination, like the rice crackers. That does restrict your options, as there aren't that many things produced on gluten-free-dedicated lines, but until you feel better, you need to be conservative. You mention your primary symptoms being gas and bloating...
  4. (I mean this as a general reply to everyone on the thread, it was just Jnkmnky's line that got me thinking...) I think it depends, really, on the type of diet you eat before transitioning to being gluten-free. The way we tend to eat and cook, it wasn't too challenging - didn't use too much in the way of risen breads or products that were made with wheat...
  5. It might be, but it might not be. It's hard to say. Did that blood test include the five antibody tests for celiac? That's important. Also, the tongue thing - having been on inhaled steroids for a good length of time in the past, yeah, I'd bet you've got thrush (oral yeast infection). They suck. But there are oral yeast medications that will clear that...
  6. lol... I don't know... I think with gluten-free bread, there may be a fair amount of sense in that statement "I bet her bread is bread". some of it really isn't bread, you know. it's ground up cardboard held together by a vacuum package, unless it's actually just a porous rock.
  7. I think, and this is definitely a broad assumption, that this is one of the reasons why the idea of candidia as a *real* systemic issue isn't respected by many people; a vocal portion of the group who does believe that systemic yeast overgrowth in otherwise mostly healthy people can be a problem is also very dismissive of other answers, saying that the answer...
  8. With as often as they add new items, I wish they'd update their lists more often. Their west coast one says 2005, but there's a lot of stuff at the store that should be gluten-free (or I've checked elsewhere that is) that's not on the list. :-( Ah well.
  9. unfortunately, it's the casein. :-( I miss dairy more than wheat. :-/
  10. what a geek I am ;-) "coding" means writing a computer program. :-) I'd use Java (a programming language) so it was able to play over the 'net on anyone's operating system.
  11. It is possible to be intolerant or allergic to other grains, but there are other options as well. First, does regular rice cause this problem - not just processed rice? Also, was it a gluten like reaction or very different? How long have you been gluten free; sometimes things can bother you for a while until you heal? Have you identified other food intolerances...
  12. nah... it just takes a while to get there. I've been working that one in particular all year, and have been doing yoga for over four years now. (I also had a wall there to help me get into it...) another student in my class can do it in the middle of the room (no wall), and hold it pretty well... it's amazing to watch.
  13. any chance they're dairy free as well?
  14. I was at a friend's birthday party once, and they tried to accomodate me, but for a lunch (the party was a dinner) I headed out to a grocery store. That's the first time I tried Thai Kitchen's bowls. I don't regularly eat them (they're too heavy on the carbs for my hypoglycemia and have a lot of salt), but they are tasty, and it's wonderful having that...
  15. stupid ever-presence of dairy... grumble, grumble, moan, whine. :-D nah... that's great they're coming out with new options that are gluten-free!
  16. Here's something I had for breakfast the other day when I was in a hurry: heat up a corn tortilla in the microwave to make it soft. wrap it (like a taco) around a big leaf of lettuce and some lunch meat. I don't know what it is about the combination of the turkey lunch meat and the warm corn tortilla, but it was tasty, and (eating two) about 10 minutes...
  17. And Nature's Path has corn flakes with an interesting (in a good way, to me) texture - the flakes are much thicker and crisper than Kellogg's.
  18. woot! thanks! it works! (sorry for the excessively bright colors... I don't much bother with fashion sense when I go to yoga... ;-) )
  19. It's just me and my husband, and we never did any frying, or much baking, so we're gluten-free with the exception of his box of cereal, his box of granola bars, and a small section of the counter where he gets bread. ;-)
  20. And you're darn good at it. We all need a niche, right? Once we identify them, someone's gotta teach 'em. ;-)
  21. dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, and shellfish those are the eight major allergens that will need to be identified on packaging. it's true that oats, barley, and rye won't have to be labeled, but the law does require that a definition of the term "gluten-free" be determined. (legally it's more complicated that common sense would indicate...
  22. cool beans! thanks! :-)
  23. If you have leftover chicken and rice, the soup is really a snap, otherwise, it'll take as long as it takes to cook rice and cut up the chicken. If you have a Cuisinart-like food processor, that REALLY helps too. Rather than post a specific recipe, I'll outline how I go about making my soup - that'll give a bunch of options for how to you want to make...
  24. I've been thinking for some time that I wanted to take on a little coding project at home, since my current work tasks have exercised zero of my coding skills. Originally, the thought was to do something along the lines of Open Original Shared Link, but better at keeping track of recipes, since there's so much cooking from scratch on this diet (my take on...
  25. You might try browsing the other stores in your area to find out what they have. I notice from the posts on the board that some things seem easier to find in some places than others. And how about carrying some gluten-free licorice? There's a place to buy it online, but I've yet to see it in a store! ;-)
