ARCHIVED Postive Test, Is This Serious
tarnalberry replied to tlcmel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, positive means positive, and I'm rather shocked that the nurse would tell you that. I would call back and ask for some additional discussion on this one, but would also go gluten-free. ;-) -
Congrats on getting it working! ;-) I like it! ;-)

I've done much better at the active things I do recently than I used to. I don't know if it's all the diet, or what, but I've done better.

ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances!
tarnalberry replied to mela14's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
About the meds - I would see if you can find a compouding pharmacy anywhere nearby (or close enough to ship medications) to have them make a compound that you can take. It may cost a bit more, but it might solve the ingredient problem. -
ARCHIVED L-glutamine
tarnalberry replied to Emme999's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Whew! That's a lotof protein! :-) I get, maybe 80g of protein a day - none of it from dairy, and *maybe* half of that from meat. (The rest being from vegetables and grains/legumes.) The majority of the population definitely doesn't consume 400g (mentioned previously in your reply) of protein a day. (I'm not actually commenting on the L-glutamine supplementation... -
ARCHIVED So How Careful Are You Anyway?
tarnalberry replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
while I voted "stop using if several people react", I often will choose not to use something that's not made on a dedicated line if it's not "important" or if it's something I can make at home or get elsewhere. for instance, I won't buy dried fruit at wild oats most of the time, because I can get the same items at trader joe's where they don't process (to... -
ARCHIVED Pasta Salad Glob
tarnalberry replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
experiment with the brands, and make sure that they were truely a touch undercooked (not just undercooked by using fewer minutes than the packaging suggests). I haven't had too much trouble with some of the tinkyada shapes, but they never hold up fabulously. (oh, also try letting it cool to nearly room temperature and stir well before refrigerating.) -
I used it for about a month, but my body *really* doesn't like the hormones in there - I think, in particular, the synthetic progestins. I didn't have a problem with it other than that.

I put down what my favorite sport to DO is. I'm not a big fan of watching track, but I love running. As for watching... I *used* to be a basketball fan, but then the Lakers tanked it, and they're just not so fun to watch anymore. (I tried, really I did.) So, these days, I mostly watch european soccer, since that's what my husband records non-stop on the...

ARCHIVED This Is Disgusting.....
tarnalberry replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you have to do that, but at least two days is better than three. Good luck getting through it! -
ARCHIVED As Promised, A Few Recipes
tarnalberry replied to tarnalberry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sun Dried Tomato Crackers Ingredients ----------- 1/2 cup millet flour 1/2 cup quinoa flour 1/2 cup buckwheat flour 1 cup amaranth flour 1/4 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes 1 tbsp italian seasoning 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp salt water, as needed garlic salt *note - the important flours here are the buckwheat and the... -
ARCHIVED Warning: The Gluten-free Bible
tarnalberry replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
It sounds like, from what's been posted here, that Jax would be going for libel in a lawsuit. I don't know exactly how hard it is to prove, easier than I thought it should be from what I recall the last time someone mentioned it to me, but based on what I've read, it would be a tough call even at that, as the comments I've seen haven't been directed at ... -
ARCHIVED Sweet Rice
tarnalberry replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
lol... ginger's good stuff (though I can only take so much candied ginger at a time...) garlic? nope, not in the sauce itself, but on the items I cook with it. it'd probably be fine. maple syrup... ehhh... no. :-D I don't think the richer taste of the maple syrup would hold up well against the salt in the soy sauce, but I'm not a big maple syrup... -
I'm glad you guys gave it a shot (and enjoy it). I know a lot of people are skeptical (I was at first too), but I'm glad it's one more item in my arsenal for facing the world. ;-)

While it's certainly no substitute for working with a therapist or medication, I was wondering if you'd tried meditation and exercise? I know it's not a cure-all, but the meditation techniques I've learned doing yoga have really helped me kill the "about to flip out" switch. It doesn't make everything all better, but it lowers the rolling boil to a bare...

ARCHIVED Sweet Rice
tarnalberry replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Like regular wine, I haven't worried about whether or not mirin specifically say "gluten-free" on the bottle. (I use the same brand you picked up.) I don't remember the exact quantities I put in that recipe, but if it's not quite to your liking, I'd encourage you to futz with it as necessary. I like extra ginger, and my husband likes plenty of pineapple... -
ARCHIVED Sweet Rice
tarnalberry replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"glutinous" rice is fine. it does just mean that it is a sticky rice. technically ALL grains contain gluten - because gluten is just the technical term for a plant protein. we use it vernacularly to refer to wheat, barley, rye, and oats because that's what the intolerance is called, and the major gluten used in... the western world, is wheat derived. ... -
ARCHIVED Question
tarnalberry replied to KB11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As noted, it is genetic. Your chances are not as high as your aunt's or uncle's, but higher than the general population. (I believe second degree relatives are 1 in 44, but I can't quite recall what the odds with third degree relatives are...) Symptoms need not be obvious, or even particularly present at this point in time. But on the off chance that... -
I agree. That's a great way to get the doctors to have some ownership of understanding the problem, while not necessarily challenging them in a way they find turns them off from listening.

ARCHIVED Godiva Chocolates - Contaminated
tarnalberry replied to Maija's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are still a lot of other chocolates we can have. Hershey's will list any source of gluten, so just check the ingredients. Tropical Source makes Gluten-free Casein-free (on dedicated lines) chocolate that is very good. (They has flavoris including "crisp rice", "raspberry", and "mint".) I believe Green&Blacks chocolate (much of it) is Gluten... -
ARCHIVED I Feel Absolutely Miserable
tarnalberry replied to Hakman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you're mainly living off rice and veggies - and hence not getting enough fat and protein - you may be experiencing blood sugar problems. You might try adding more protein and fat to your diet (in the form of meats, nuts, and higher protein/fat grains (like buckwheat, quinoa, rice bran), and other items like coconut milk and oils) to see if that makes... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to sulli39's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The cheapest/safest way to go is to stick to whole, naturally gluten-free foods. So, produce, meat, rice/beans, dairy (if you can have it). Rice cakes aren't necessarily bad, but if you've got a brand your confident in, add peanut butter to lower the glycemic load of the meal. Chili can be easy to make in large quantities so that you can save leftovers... -
It probably did some damage, but not a lot of damage, and hopefully you'll start feeling better soon. I know the feeling of being out and about and worrying about what you can eat, so I thought I'd share some of the stuff I make/bring that's non-perishable that I can have on-hand, besides fruit, of course. *beef jerky (homemade, but I had Tillamook...

Yep, you absolutely can have a problem with gluten and still have normal blood tests. Of course, the first question that comes to mind is: what blood tests did you have? (A lot of docs don't run the full panel, or require more positives than others might require for a diagnosis.) The other thing to consider, besides the interpretation of the tests is...

ARCHIVED Gf After 3 Years And Still Not "better"
tarnalberry replied to SJN1279's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
nope, unless you went through York for IgG antibody testing, your blood tests wouldn't have identified a casein intolerance. if you had serum allergy testing, it would probably have revealed an IgE allergy to casein, but the two are different reactions in the body. for me, my reaction to casein is actually quite like my reactions to gluten, but it was hard...
