  1. Hmm, I saw a summer camp program someplace that offered a week or two during the summer for gluten-free kids.Everything that week was gluten free. I'll have to see if I can find the place again - it was last summer when I saw the info on it, and I don't remember where or what the name was. Debbie Ok, check this website: Open Original Shared Link I...
  2. Um, I know 2 people with celiac who also lost hearing. One had numerous associated diseases - Addison's, diabetes, etc., and whether the hearing loss came directly from the celiac, or from the host of related problems, I don't know. The other person really had no associated symptoms. She started losing her hearing in her twenties, and while she had some symptoms...
  3. Yes, everyone heals at a different rate. I've heard it can take up to 2 years, but that's more for people who were exposed for a very long time and not diagnosed. Still, 6 months to a year seem to be "average" healing time for most people, so the fact that you are seeing improvement is good. Also, have you checked on any other food sensitiviiies? Gluten intolerance...
  4. There's a couple in Maryland (Baltimore area) that does a gluten free dining and travel club thing. They arrange a couple of trips a year - cruises and the like - that are all gluten free. The site is Open Original Shared Link FYI, they've got a ClubMed adults only planned in Feb., a ClubMed family getaway in July, an Alaskan cruise in May, a tour of...
  5. None of the current tests are perfect. The blood tests can indicated celiac, and testing positive on more that one is highly significant. If the biopsy shows villi damage, especially with positive blood tests, then celiac will probably be diagnosed. There are one or two other things which can cause villi damage, though, but they are very rare. Also, if...
  6. A friend just sent me this information. It's probably very beginner level, but I thought I might go, to see what info they have. Just saw a blurb in a mailing from Shady Grove - a class entitled Gluten Free Diet being taught Monday, Feb. 6, 7:30-9 pm. Cost $20. Understand how gluten damages the celiac small intestine. Learn how to identify food products...
  7. Just to prove everyone's different - I lost weight on prednisone when I was on it last year. The doctor only gave me enough for twelve days, but I lost 4 pounds during those 12 days. Since I am, and always have been overweight, I thought it was great. But I have had completely indiosyncratic reactions to medicines before - stimulants can put me right to...
  8. I agree. No matter what Drs. think, they aren't God and don't know everything. (The problem is convincing them of that.) I've know doctors to prescribe a medicine a person was allergic too, and the fact that the person was allergic was clearly noted in the person's file! So definately talk to the pharmasist and to the doctor. Also, while this doctor thinks...
  9. I do get little tiny blisters the first day, then they dry up (Or I scratch so much I break them) and what's left is red splotches, rashes, and occasionally a patch of dry peeling skin. Your pictures looked much like my hands the second day. I do get the blisters first, but not everyone blisters. Try to see if the doctor or dermatologist will test the next...

    ARCHIVED Fast Food

FYI - one thing to watch with any restaurant is the time you are ordering. If it's the middle of the lunch rush, there is far more likely to be a problem than if it's between times and you're the only customer. The staff is preparing several meals at once, and therefore a much higher likelyhood of cross-contamination. Also, last thing at night when things...
  11. I believe that a big stomach can be caused by malnourishment, as well as gas, etc. If malnourishment is contibuting, then : 1. the villi have to heal, which can take many months or a year. 2. enough vitamins/minerals then have to be absorbed to bring levels up to where they belong. Since she's so young, the villi should heal fairly quickly, but she...
  12. I noticed improvement in some other symptoms after the first few days, but it was probably a couple of weeks before I started having really good - not at all depressed, jump out of bed - kind of days. And it was still sporadic at that time. I'd have a good day, then a few "normal" for me, depressed, days. Then after another couple of weeks I noticed I was...
  13. The easiest things I can think of are soups. I'll throw some meat and vegetables and seasonings in a slow cooker, and just let is cook for a few hours. Then it's ready when I'm hungry. You can use frozen vegetables - just throw a bag full in. I watch the sales and check out the stores own brands - one of the stores by me frequently has them for .99 for a...
  14. Yes, yes, yes! This board and the people on it have made going gluten-free soooo much easier! Thank you, Debbie
  15. When looking for flours, don't forget the nut flours. I especially like them for sweet baked goods. Coffee cakes and muffins, things like that just seem to beg for almond or pecan flours. Also walnut, hazelnut, etc. Nuts add a bit of protein as well so I like to use them whenever possible. Also, I've seen pumpkin flour for sale. Haven't tried it, but I bet...
  16. This is from another celiac forum, but it should give you plenty of information to start with. (And if you make it through all of 'em, let me know. I've only read about half so far.) Open Original Shared Link Debbie
  17. Thanks jerseyangel. And thanks for the site Claire. I don't mind reading a few bottles - if I know Brands A, B, and C are supposed to be gluten free, I'll check before I buy. But just looking down the aisle at the 40 or so brands the store carries, and thinking that I might have to read EVERY one to find one that's gluten free - well, I just haven't even...
  18. Actually, the food pyramid was designed by the USDA. Yep, that's right. The US Department of AGRICULTURE is the one who came up with the pyramid. And what do you think the USDA supports and gets support from? Farmers, maybe? When the pyramid was originally designed about 30 years ago, it was promoted by the USDA to encourage people to eat more farm products...
  19. Cathy, Let me tell you my story. I started having problems about 15 years ago. Just didn't feel right, fatigued a bit more easily, took longer to recover from colds, a little occasional diarrhea. Nothing major, but I told my doctor. Ran tests, and decided noting wrong with me - eat a better diet (as per the pyramid, which just made my worse) and get more...
  20. Most of the Carnation Instant Breakfasts are gluten free (NOT the chocolate malt). I'll often throw a couple in my bag and add one to a cup of coffee (with a little half and half if possible). The rich chocolate one makes a nice "cafe mocha" drink; that and some fruit will usually get me through the morning. You could have a gluten-free breakfast bar or donut...
  21. One of the on line search's for Bed and Breakfasts, innseekers.com, now lists gluten free meals as one of the search options! Just for the heck of it, I did a search on Maryland (my state) and found 2 B&B's that state they can serve gluten free meals. I would suggest you talk to then personally and verify chances of cross contamination, etc. but still...
  22. I think you do what I do - I don't think about eating until I get hungry, and then there isn't time to actually fix things. So I've gone hungry or eaten the wrong things far too many times over the years. When I realized I HAD to go gluten free I had to sit down and think about it, make plans, and be prepared. It's not easy, but I've been gluten free for...
  23. Thanks Claire, This is great. I admit, I was feeling overwhelmed by trying to find all gluten free items. I just about got the foods down, and was not looking forward to soaps, etc. Mostly, I just threw everything out that said wheat, barley or rye, and was using only a couple of things with no obvious gluten and doing without if I didn't have anything ...
  24. Are you absolutely positive you are completely gluten free? Nothing in a skin cream, hair spray, shampoo, pet food, anything, that could be getting into your system? Is your house gluten free or are your husband and daughter eating gluten, leaving crumbs, using flour, etc. that could be cross contaminating your food? If you are still getting gluten, even...
  25. Oh honey, I'm so sorry to hear that. You're too far away for a real hug, but a cyber hug was just sent your way. And I know just what you mean. Debbie
