  1. Ask if the doctor knows anyone sensible elsewhere. The rest of us could use a good doc. Debbie

    ARCHIVED Doctors-worth It?

Well, one thing you DON'T want to do when you are sick is find a new doctor. You should have one or two that you like, and checked out when you were feeling well. For instance, if you think you may need a GI, say to do an endo in a couple of years to make sure everything looks well healed and there's no villi damage, then now or some other time when you are...
  3. 1. Yes - many, many, many people on this board were diagnosed later in life. I was 50 2. Yes, I've been overweight all my life and ONLY ever lost weight on a low carb diet (when I wasn't eating many grain products.) Celiac is a bit less common in blacks than in whites, but is still a relatively common disease. It's even less common in people of Asian descent...
  4. Shirley, Try new spices, or use familiar ones in unfamiliar ways. If the taste of the whole dish is new, the absence of salt isn't obvious. I like cinnamon on meat for instance - rub it all over a roast before cooking. Try out all those spices that you never use, or use a sweet spice for a meat dish, a hot spice for a dessert dish, etc. Make it taste...
  5. Sawyer, I can understand the not wanting to cook all the time, especially after a long day at work etc. One thing that helped me with that is I made a list of a few things I LIKE, that are gluten free and reasonably safe from cross contamination at the local fast food places. I try hard not to hit them often, but the days I work from 8 in the morning until...
  6. Bonnie, Why don't you try to see if the doctor will do COMPLETE nutrional vitamin/mineral tests. I had improvement in some things, but not everything after 6 months. I got my doctor to run SOME tests - (couldn't convince her to check everything, so I still think I'm missing some stuff) and found that I was still low in Iron, which I expected, but also...
  7. Our local co-op does not require you to be a member to shop there, but I understand some do. I'd call first and check before making a trip. With ours, membership gets you a discount on certain days, and a little more "validity" in input - when a member asks them to carry specific items, they are more likely to jump on it and get them in, knowing that the...
  8. Vincent, I checked our local co-op, which is affiliated with several others, but the only one in Tennesee is in Knoxville. If you or anyone want to check out the list it's at Open Original Shared Link Debbie
  9. Hi, I belong to our local co-op and have shopped there for years. There are some links on its site to finding a local co-op or setting one up. Also tells a little about what a co-op is/does. Open Original Shared Link Debbie
  10. Umm, a gradual change might work. Most of us really aren't completely gluten free the first week or two anyway, while we try to figure out all those labels. Maybe, just using up what he's already got in the house, but checking labels and buying gluten free whenever he has to replace something might allow his system to adapt slowly, but he could aim to be...
  11. Judy, This is from Wikipedia. I bolded the part about systemic disease. I think celiac could be called a systemic disease, so there might be some relation. Debbie Retinopathy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Retinopathy [[image:{{{Image}}}|190px|center|]] {{{Caption}}} ICD-10 H35.0-H35.2 ICD-9 362.0-362.2 ...
  12. Oh Judy, So sorry to hear what you went through. Drs. can be such A**es. Don't have any help for you, but you've given me one more thing to think about. I haven't had an eye appointment since being gluten-free, but I'm due for one in a couple of months. Hopefully, my doctor will be a little bit more savvy about the drops and more considerate than yours...
  13. I've had some of their products and found them quite good. You can write them at info@orgran.com and ask for distributers in your area. Their website is Open Original Shared Link Debbie
  14. Oh, Rusla, I soooo agree! There are several different vets in the group practice I take my cats to, and there isn't ONE of them who isn't more caring, concerned and better than any doctor I've seen in the past ten years. The vets take the time to check everything, ask me about any concerns, offer suggestions and alternate possibilities if one thing isn't...
  15. Sitting here with a package of Hormel making my lunch. Ingredients: Pork, beef, salt, contains 2% or less of water, Dextrose, natural spices, natural smoke flavoring, oleoresin of paprika lactic acid starter culture, garlic powder sodium nitrite, BHA, BHT, citric acid. Gluten free Don't see anything that sounds like dairy. Debbie
  16. Well, I think it is any food that a particular person is intolerant to, but I think it is only "problem" foods. There are a number of foods that most people only eat occassionally, and yet never show any problem with on the rare instances when they are eaten - take watermelon for example. Most people will eat it only during the summer, so go 6-8 months without...
  17. I also take thyroid med. I was on Levoxyl 88 mcg for a couple of years, and never felt right. I found out that my main problem wasn't that my body wasn't making adequate T4, it was that it wasn't converting it properly to T3 when needed. After bugging (and I do mean BUGGING) my doctor for a bit, I finally got a prescription for T3 only. That works a lot better...
  18. Yeah, I haven't noticed the light or dark difference so much, but just ability of my eyes to focus. Somedays they are just fine, and some days they're not. Some days my glasses are absolutely perfect for reading and some days I can't read a thing with them, and have to take them off to be able to read. If it was consistantly getting worse, I'd blame it on...
  19. oooh, if anyone goes there, could you post the hours and directions? I live in MD, but my family's in NY, and I go up 15 right through Dillsburg whenever I go to visit family. This would be a great stop on the way up or down. And it's not all that far, about an hour, from where I live. So an occassional "stock up" trip would be possible as well. Debbie
  20. I switched my cats to Innova Evo a couple of months ago. It's completely grain free. They love it and seem to be doing fine on it. I suppliment with raw food several times a week (which I've been doing for a couple of years.) There are occassionally times now when they turn up their noses at the raw food (I was in the mood for turkey tonight, not chicken...
  21. I get very frustrated with the food manufacturers too. I mean, gluten DOES NOT need to be added to almost anything they make. Cereal is one thing, at least it is a grain product, although adding barley to rice seems silly to me. But WHY do they have to add gluten products to things like packaged meats???? Dried fruits????vegetable soup??? Things that aren...
  22. Yes to long lashes - I've always had my glasses specially made so the lens curves out and the lashes don't catch. Hmm, also, I've always have VERY short weak nails, and several other people on this commented on how bad their nails were. Another possible celiac marker? Debbie
  23. Corn for me too. And that's probably been for twenty-thirty years. Debbie
  24. Well, the experts say that gluten must be ingested to be a problem; it can't be absorbed through the skin. But if you have it on the skin it is soooo easy to get in the mouth. If the cookies etc. are premade, and you're not actually working with lots of loose flour flying through the air and all, it shouldn't be much of a problem. If you have a lot of loose...
  25. Vincent, I believe the Yoplait are all gluten free except for the obvious, like granola topping. I know several people on this board swear by yoplait. I just get plain and add my own fruit - just done that for years, since I ate yogurt before it was popular - I made my own (and still do sometimes) back in the sixties. So when I started eating yogurt they...
