  1. dogear, There are many, many people who don't eat the "standard" diet through personal choice - for instance anyone who eats vegetarian, vegan, kosher, low carb, high carb, raw food, etc. etc. What you eat and why you eat it is your own personal choice. You don't have to explain it to anyone. A simple "I don't eat gluten" will do. If people persist, you...
  2. The diarrhea cleared up first. Then the brain fog, unless I accidently got glutened. I still have sleep problems, although I've seen a bit of improvement in the last few days. I'm starting to have occasional days when I have energy! Not much, but any improvement is welcome. I only started gluten-free end of August, so I'm about in the same time frame as you...
  3. If you're meeting for sporting events, consider packing a picnic lunch to eat at the event, or find a park and enjoy after. Outback, PF Changs and Carrabas have gluten free menus - you still have to be very careful, but it helps. Also Boston Market has a number of gluten free items. You can check their websites for more information. I'm sure there are some...
  4. Thanks! Made me wish I still lived on Long Island so I could go try out all those place. Oh well, next time I visit, at least I'll know where I can go. Debbie
  5. I've picked up the book and looked at it. Doesn't make any sense to me, and the foods he notes for my blood type are all wrong. For instance, supposedly I AM supposed to be able to eat wheat. Well, with one celiac gene and one gluten sensitive gene, that's not the best advice, even if I hadn't "triggered" the celiac. There were several other foods "advised...

    ARCHIVED Ugh--doctors!

Rusla, I agree with you about the veterinarian! My cats go to a clinic with multiple doctors - not one has ever not taken the time to do a thorough evaluation, explain to me any problems, medicine, possible side effects of medicine, etc. I don't get one tenth of the attention from my doctors that my cats get at the vets. I've told a couple of the vets...
  7. could you have a food allergy? Maybe dairy or corn or eggs or one of the other major problem foods. Then you'd only get diarrhea on days when you ate that food. Debbie
  8. Rachel, I have DH and I find that even gluten free, some other things can cause an outbreak. Stress, for instance. If I'm under a deadline at work or school, I'll usually end up with a few new blisters. Pressure or injury in or around the area also sets off an attack. Like, once I jammed my thumb - not badly enough for a doctor, but it really hurt for a...

    ARCHIVED Ironic

Yes, Kimball only tests for the 2 gluten sensitive, celiac genes, DQ2 and DQ8. But the non-celiac gluten sensitive gene DQ1 is the one most often associated with nuerological damage, like ataxia. Even if you don't have DQ2 or DQ8, you could still have DQ1 and gluten ataxia. I know, it's expensive, but the Enterolab test is probably worth it, if the NIH...
  10. elonwy, sounds wonderful. And don't worry, anyone who doesn't already know the dishes ar gluten-free will never even think of it. I know - I've cooked specialty allergen free dinners for non-allergic people several times, and no one (except the one I make it for) ever notices. Debbie
  11. Well, there isn't a lot of research on celiac disease and heart disease, but there is some, and most of it seems to show higher rates of heart disease among celiac disease patients. https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-50105572217.03 Debbie
  12. darlindeb25 If you want to make a stuffing without cornbread this year, I have a great recipe that uses no bread at all. It does use eggs, though, as the binder, so won't work for anyone who's egg sensitive. If you want it, email me at debbiewil@juno.com. Debbie

    ARCHIVED Do's

The couple of DO's I've been to haven't been more knowledgeable, but they have been a lot more willing to listen, more open, etc. Definately among the better doctors I've seen. I'd definately have a DO as my GP if there was one in my town. Debbie
  14. debmidge, I am so sorry for all you went through. I too have found doctors to be very less than "professional' and it is getting worse every year. I also don't expect doctors to be perfect, but I do expect doctors to listen and to THINK, not just assume that they know everything and that if you don't respond to the drug they give you or that the ONE test...
  15. The studies seem to show that gluten isn't absorbed through the skin, so a skin care product containing gluten shouldn't directly cause DH. But anything that is on the skin, hair, etc. can be ingested. How many times a day do you touch your face? If you're eating finger foods and pick up a piece of cheese, nuts etc. and put it in your mouth, anything on your...
  16. What I hate are the doctors that absolutely refuse to listen to you and are sure that they know everything. Case in point - many, many years ago I spent a week visiting my family. My youngest brother had just been diagnosed with mono (and I have to admit I spent much of the week teasing him and giving him a hard time about it. ) Well, a week or so after...
  17. Tell me about it! I told my doctor 10 years ago that I got diarrha every time I ate pasta. I didn't test positive for a wheat allergy, so the doctor just dismissed it as all in my head. And I had low iron levels - borderline anemia. The doctor just told me to take iron tablets. So I was taking 3 a day, and still low iron. I told the doctor that I just wasn...
  18. Check out the HIPPA law. If there is no lapse in coverage, or no more than a certain number of days (I think 62 or 63), then an insurance company CAN NOT deny coverage due to a pre existing condition. So if you have coverage now, and he gets coverage at the new job within the "grace" period, you won't have a problem. If there is or may be a lapse, then it...
  19. Saw the title and couldn't resist joining in. Yup. my mother's 100% Irish. My dad's a mix, but it"s Mom's family that has the history - Diabetes, colon cancer, stomach cancer, Addison's disease, asthma, allergies, thyroid - right down the list of everything caused by or associated with celiac and gluten! Debbie
  20. That is great! And keep an eye on that classmate. With that ability to grasp the pertinent information and actually apply it, she should do well in her career. I know, I'm always looking for someone willing to actually take the information she's given and use it. Debbie
  21. Ignore that idiot in the store. Just pity his poor family. And there's some really great, easy meat marinades. Red wine or vinegar or lemon juice, whichever you prefer, olive oil, and seasonings - just salt and pepper will work, or add onion, garlic, whatever you want that's gluten free. Minimal time and effort - great steaks. Debbie
  22. I have a question for the more experienced members. When I was first learning about gluten-free foods, someone told me to be careful of teas, because some companies use wheat starch as the sealant on tea bags. The tea might be fine, but I could still have a reaction from the bag, especially if I had several cups. So I stick with ones I know don't use wheat...
  23. Yes, it's all the small "hidden' gluten that I hate. I have no problem whatsoever staying away from bread, pasta, cookies, etc. But it's when you order the salad with grilled chicken breast, and make sure no croutons, you check or go without salad dressing, clean grill, etc. etc. then have a reaction anyway, because they used a commercial frozen chicken breast...
  24. I read one study where they found MEASURABLE reactions to glutens in celiacs (ie. increased antibodies, etc.) with .1g of gluten. A slice of bread has about 4.8 grams of gluten, which means it's got 48 times the amount of gluten necessary to cause a celiac to have a measurable reaction. And with the size of the average crouton, one probably has at least...

    ARCHIVED Newbie

Hi Gina and Kaiti, You guys are awesome. I'm also a newbie, and HATE the grocery story thing. I feel like I have to pick up and read every single label in the aisle to find the one that's gluten-free. Having the list of brands is soooo great. I don't mind picking up the the dozen or so types of one brand and reading the labels, to see which ones are gluten...
