  1. Lots of people with celiac disease (at least 40%) have unexplained weight GAIN, not loss. Weight gain can be a symptom of malnutrition as well. Her way of looking at it just shows how ignorant she is about celiac disease. If you think you could educate her, so she won't do the same thing to other patients, go for it. If, on the other hand, she is one of...
  2. Yes, all maple syrup (not the fake stuff) is gluten-free. I wouldn't buy vanilla flavouring, but rather, pure vanilla extract. Some flavourings have gluten in them. But others might know more than me, as I never bothered to find out, as I am intolerant to vanilla either way (too high in salicylates).
  3. While gluten may well be your problem, I just want to mention that all of your symptoms could also be caused by nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). With me, potatoes will cause gastrointestinal distress, and tomatoes cause the migraines. Plus, of course, gluten is a huge problem as well.
  4. Dove products are gluten-free. Since I've been using Dove soap, shampoo, conditioner and gel, I haven't had that crazy itchy scalp and skin, or those annoying rashes on my forehead and back of my neck.
  5. Actually, it has been shown that dairy and soy can also damage the villi. In order for the villi to heal, it is best to eliminate both dairy and soy for at least three to six months, before you try them again.
  6. I am glad your kids are doing great. But the above is still poor advice, as not all pre-term babies will do as well as yours. If it is possible to prevent pre-term labour, you should always strive for that. When babies can't go home to be with their mothers right away and have to stay in the hospital in an incubator for weeks, how can that be considered...
  7. I have four older kids (27, 26, 24, 22, the 24-year old being the only son), who are all married. And then there is Susie, who will be 16 next month. She obviously knows everything, and parents are stupid and should stay out of her business. By the way, that is 'sweet' Susie in my avatar. And yes, she can be sweet. Once in a while, and she really is...
  8. Andie, I agree with you completely. I am very glad your son is doing well now. I just wished my teenaged youngest daughter would agree to give the gluten-free diet a try without positive tests! She tested negative on the bloodwork a year ago, and tells me that it has been proven she doesn't have celiac disease, and that's that. I am now having her tested...
  9. Is it accurate that you've been here last on the 10th? Even if you have seen the posts themselves before, are you sure there aren't any new replies? Because every time there is a reply, it is viewed as a new post, because you haven't seen the new reply. Mind you, I have had malfunctions, and there would be posts I had definitely seen in the 'view new posts...
  10. I haven't done the testing. But I know there are many people here with a score of 11 who went gluten-free, and all their symptoms cleared up. How high your score is isn't that important. If it is above ten, that means your immune system is reacting to gluten. People with a lower score often appear much sicker than the ones with a higher score, how high...
  11. Unfortunately, this doctor appears to be quite ignorant about celiac disease. It is a well proven fact that yes, gluten WILL be in breast milk, and can definitely cause a baby to have celiac disease, if that child has a gluten intolerance. Please read this story that someone just posted. You don't want to go the same route! Open Original Shared Link
  12. Kassandra is right, all the symptoms you describe (including the depression) can be caused by dairy and/or soy. It would be wise for you to eliminate those two and then see how you feel. Give it a good try, at least two weeks to a month, before you decide it isn't working.
  13. Shan, I am glad you are still keeping your son off those foods. I have no idea why he still won't grow, that is definitely a mystery. If something is still 'burning him up inside', there is something causing that! Medication may be okay until the cause is found. But the less time he takes them, the better. Maybe he has intolerances nobody has thought...
  14. A little farther up I said this about guaifenesin: There have been serious studies done, with hundreds of patients. Half of them took guaifenesin for a whole year, following the protocol completely, and the other half wasn't. There was no difference in outcome. It was given a fair chance, and failed.
  15. You have a high malabsorption score, indicating fairly severe villi damage. It is true, they can't diagnose celiac disease (as at this point, you can only say it is celiac disease if you have had a biopsy, which is silly), but with having one of the main celiac disease genes, the positive scores, and the high malabsorption score, it is very likely you have...
  16. You know, you don't need dairy for calcium at all. When people say you need dairy for calcium, I ask them, "Where do you think cows get their calcium for those strong bones?" Well, the answer is, of course, green grass! Green leafy vegetables have way more calcium than dairy has ever had, and our bodies can actually use it. The calcium in dairy can't be...
  17. Actually, when a baby is being breastfed, and the mother eats gluten containing foods, this child is being introduced to gluten, like it or not. Because it has been proven that gliadin will be in breast milk if the mother eats gluten grains. In fact, if a mother eats gluten containing foods while pregnant, the baby can be sick with celiac disease before...
  18. The nightshade connection with gluten is, that gluten is a lectin (a kind of protein), and nightshades are lectin foods as well. I don't tolerate any lectins at all (meaning, I can't have dairy, eggs, legumes, any grains, nightshades). If your son has had tons of French fries lately, that could be a problem. But it also could just be gluten, since obviously...
  19. Is your daughter still consuming dairy? It can cause severe depression as well. My husband's cousin has a severe intolerance to dairy. Before they figured it out, she was in a deep black pit of depression, which even antidepressants wouldn't help. When she eliminated dairy, the black cloud lifted, and she fully recovered. Now, if she dares drink milk or...
  20. Ehm, gastric reflux? Do you realize that gastric reflux is one of the very common symptoms of celiac disease? How do they determine that he absolutely cannot have celiac disease? I don't get it. Gastric reflux and medications (which have never been approved for kids, as far as I recall) is good news? Personally, changing diet and feeling better is infinitely...
  21. Oops, sorry, somehow I didn't see that you were saying your husband is a pediatrician. I hate all those short forms, like DD and DH (which I always read as dermatitis herpetiformis, by the way), because it doesn't register as PEOPLE to me! That's why I never use them. I have Asperger Syndrome, and I am very literal, and very visual, too. I like seeing husband...
  22. Yes, not only can gluten cause all kinds of mental health problems (depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia and others), it certainly is addictive. And I expect you are right in believing that you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Please persevere with the diet, those symptoms should clear up within about two weeks, after which I expect you'll start feeling...
  23. Could it be hives? I get hives from gluten (and other things I am intolerant to). Anyway, all kinds of hives, eczema, dermatitis etc. are caused by intolerances. Meaning that he is reacting to food. And very likely you are as well. Dairy and soy are also suspects in skin conditions. My oldest granddaughter was covered from the top of her head to her toes...
  24. That makes my blood boil! IBS isn't a disease at all, but rather a bunch of symptoms. And since they are symptoms of something, how can anybody say it isn't serious? All unexplained symptoms (and IBS doesn't explain a thing) are potentially indicating something serious. The goal should always be to keep investigating until the cause of those symptoms is found...
  25. It sounds to me like you should find yourself a new GI doctor, this one is obviously clueless. Plus, you don't need a doctor to do an elimination diet. NO doctor can stop you if you decide to change your diet or your kid's diet! Many here have done an elimination diet on their own, including myself.
