ARCHIVED I Have My Daughter Back!
Ursa Major replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Great news, you must be so happy! -
ARCHIVED Brown Rice Contamination
Ursa Major replied to Vykt0r's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am intolerant to all lectins, some more and some less. Rice will effect me almost the same way that gluten does, especially the brown rice. So, I suspect that maybe you simply can't tolerate the rice and it has nothing to do with cc at all. -
ARCHIVED Pooping & Miralax
Ursa Major replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree about the soy - that is even worse than regular milk. Soy is terrible for anybody (unless it has been fermented the traditional Asian way to get rid of the potent toxins soy beans contain, which takes years to do) and has been shown to cause the reproductive organs in boys to not develop properly, causing fertility problems in adulthood. The reason... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Diagnoses And Doctors
Ursa Major replied to LoriC's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Lori, I don't think they are allowed to drop you if you are already a client when diagnosed. And not all companies care about the celiac disease diagnosis, either. I hope you'll never have that problem. Oh, and yes, you certainly should tell a dentist or new doctor that you have celiac disease! -
ARCHIVED Pooping & Miralax
Ursa Major replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would say, instead of giving Miralax with milk, cut out the milk and hold the Miralax! Dairy is known to cause constipation, and could well be the culprit here. Nobody needs milk after weaning, and (contrary to what the dairy industry wants you to believe) dairy leeches calcium out of your body, rather than putting it in. The foods highest in calcium... -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do?
Ursa Major replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You said you have suspected she has celiac disease before. If it was my child, I would have the gene test done to see what her genes are. If she has the celiac disease genes or the gluten sensitive genes, and she has those episodes after eating gluten, I'd take her off it permanently. I don't believe she dislikes gluten foods because she isn't used to... -
I agree about the dairy. It is known to cause constipation, and could be the culprit. It is best to stick with simple, naturally gluten-free foods in the beginning, like meats, vegetables and fruits, and not start eating gluten-free substitutes until after some healing has taken place.

ARCHIVED Confused About Diagnoses And Doctors
Ursa Major replied to LoriC's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I just want to mention that with a diagnosis of DH, you automatically have a firm diagnosis of celiac disease. Not all people with celiac disease have DH, but all people with DH have celiac disease. celiac disease is the only thing that causes DH. And the only valid treatment for it is the gluten-free diet. The Dapsone is only used to help clear up symptoms... -
ARCHIVED I Baked A gluten-free Black Forest Cake
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, even though I have a migraine, I will tell you what happened. Everybody absolutely LOVED that cake! My son said, that it was the best cake I have ever made (he is 24, so 'ever' is quite a while here ). And that obviously includes all the gluteny cakes I've ever baked, too. If I wouldn't have told people it was gluten-free, nobody would ever have... -
Enterolab will send their test kits to anywhere in the world. You have to send the sample back by overnight courier, which isn't cheap. I just ordered the full panel for my youngest daughter, and I live in Canada as well. And Ginsou, I understand that some doctors won't believe you if you can't show them a paper with numbers. Mind you, a lot of them don...

ARCHIVED Should I Ask For Endoscopy?
Ursa Major replied to doulagrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your husband wants to see an 'official' diagnosis with a paper to prove it, I'd go with Enterolab. But your son has all the classic symptoms of celiac disease and absolutely needs to be on a gluten-free diet, the sooner the better! He won't have to eat gluten for the Enterolab testing. And with young children the absolute best test IS the diet! If... -
ARCHIVED I Baked A gluten-free Black Forest Cake
Ursa Major posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am so excited that I need to share. I used to be well known for my fabulous Black Forest Cake, but haven't baked (or attempted to bake) one for the past two years. We are having guests today, and I decided to give it a try. If it tastes as good as it looks, it will be a winner! Anyway, gotta go, if you have questions, I'll answer them tomorrow. ... -
ARCHIVED Are Personal Emails Allowed?
Ursa Major replied to frec's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well, there is. When you set up your personal preferences, you can allow or disallow personal messages. So, with some people, you won't get through. But I think most people allow the personal message feature. -
ARCHIVED Are Personal Emails Allowed?
Ursa Major replied to frec's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Those private messages are not e-mails, but messages from one forum member to another only. And yes, of course they are allowed, that is what the feature is there for! So, if you want to ask somebody a specific question that you don't want to publicly post, go right ahead. -
ARCHIVED 3 Yr Old Son
Ursa Major replied to hapy4dolphins's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, constipation can also be a sign of celiac disease. But it is also one of the major symptoms of a dairy intolerance (not just lactose, but casein intolerance, meaning all dairy). I would take him off both gluten and dairy for at least a couple of weeks to see if he feels better, and then challenge one at a time, at least one week apart, to see what... -
ARCHIVED Who's An Expert On Nightshades?
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
No, it is obvious who he is, you can buy his book from Amazon. What she thinks is fishy is that it looks like he only came here to advertise his book, not to help people. -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Explain Lab Results To Me?
Ursa Major replied to RachaelJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, none of the links lead to any of the scans of the lab work. Why don't you just post the values (including the normal range)? Whether it is celiac or an intolerance makes no difference at all, you would have mostly the same symptoms, and the treatment is the same, too (the gluten-free diet). I get joint pains from things other than gluten... -
ARCHIVED Bday Cake Recipe
Ursa Major replied to Nikki'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had bought Glutino chocolate cake mix, because I want to try making Black Forest cake next week for having friends over for supper. One of my daughters is here this weekend with her little girls, and she saw the mix last night (she and her older daughter, who is 16 months, are gluten-free now) and begged me to let her bake a cake. Since I can just go tomorrow... -
Well, on Monday I found an envelope from Medic Alert in the mail. And thinking that the bracelet would come in a box, I opened it, and it was the bracelet. I was surprised that it was engraved exactly the way I had agreed upon with the person I was talking with on the phone! And the wallet card that came with it has a ton of information that is excellent...

ARCHIVED Who's An Expert On Nightshades?
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It sounds to me like it may be dairy. Not just lactose, but rather casein, meaning ALL dairy! I have never had a problem with nausea after eating nightshades myself. Potatoes will give me diarrhea and rumbling in the intestines as well as joint pains, back pain and headaches. Tomatoes give me terrible migraines and mild stomach problems, peppers make me break... -
ARCHIVED Is Beef Jerky Okay During Pregnancy?
Ursa Major replied to alamaz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I really can't see any good reason at all why beef jerky would be a problem during pregnancy. Doctors know usually next to nothing about nutrition, and I would think that your doctor would be the last one to know if meat jerkey would be a problem. I simply wouldn't worry about it at all. If you like it and it is gluten-free, go for it! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Problem
Ursa Major replied to Kitty Cat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sure sounds like you have a problem with gluten. Unfortunately, if you have stopped eating it, and your GI orders testing for celiac disease, you will be guaranteed false negative results, even if you have celiac disease. You have two options: Eat gluten foods again until you see the GI and be sick, or stop eating them, but not bother getting tested... -
ARCHIVED Medications
Ursa Major replied to kali-mist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Why would epinephrine have gluten? It is the same as adrenalin, something the adrenal gland is supposed to make in times of stress. It is a steroid, and I am sure it is perfectly safe. -
ARCHIVED Uggh, Bad Blood Tests Results - I New It - Glutened
Ursa Major replied to jmd3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Were your levels lower than when you were diagnosed? Maybe your body just takes a long time to heal, and your levels will come down to normal eventually. I have eaten the chili from Wendy's and wasn't glutened. Being glutened (if you were, you should have known at the time) wouldn't show up in blood work a month later, I don't think. Is your house... -
ARCHIVED False Negative...
Ursa Major replied to rock on's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is a high false negative rate with the blood tests. Also, he may not have intestinal damage, but rather damage in other parts of the body. In which case his blood tests wouldn't show celiac disease. I would try testing with Enterolab to see which genes he has, and what his levels would be with them. In the end, the diet is the best test there...
