  1. Unfortunately, the blood test is extremely unreliable in children under six and there are many false negatives. The same goes for the biopsy. For children this age the diet is the most reliable test, as well as testing from Enterolab (stool testing, no blood draw involved, less traumatic for everyone except for your wallet ). Also, even though 95...
  2. Kelly, I imagine it would be really tough staying gluten-free while in Iraq. I would think that cross contamination is pretty much unavoidable, even if the chef tries. Do your commanding officers know you have celiac disease? I hope it will work out.
  3. Hi, and welcome to these boards. I am sorry to say that you have a very ignorant doctor, who tortured your baby with taking all that blood for nothing. First of all, those tests are extremely unreliable in children under six to begin with, and secondly, after being gluten-free for a whole month, you are guaranteed a false negative, even if it would have...
  4. How exciting, I am very glad for you!
  5. Olestra is known to cause health problems, two of them diarrhea and stomach cramps. Nobody should eat anything with olestra as an ingredient. It is poison! I hope you feel better soon.
  6. Karen, the difference between you and Abi's son is, that you were undiagnosed for years, which made you really ill. Abi's son will NOT grow up having severe health problems that will just sneak up on him, because he is on a gluten-free diet at a very young age, and will avoid developing all kinds of other problems. In my experience, it is best to stay...
  7. Well, my honest opinion is that if he is growing, happy and healthy, then you must be doing a good job of keeping him gluten-free. Since you are right, that is all you can do, I don't really see the need for a blood test, either. Keep up the good work!
  8. I agree that testing him now is a good idea. Eczema is ALWAYS caused by food intolerances. All five of my oldest daughter's kids have intolerances. And they all had eczema until the cause was figured out. My oldest granddaughter was absolutely covered in eczema from head to toe until the age of two. The cause was primarily dairy. Once she was taken off...
  9. Amy, your scores are quite high, as you already know. With all your health problems I would definitely eliminate all gluten, dairy, egg and soy. Those are foods that many people can't tolerate (including me). You may never be able to have them again, I still can't, even after two years of eliminating them. I wouldn't try for another baby until your intestines...
  10. Susan, I guess I am too blunt again......... one of my problems. I am sorry if I made you feel worse. But I will certainly pray for you. God can heal anybody, even if nothing else works. And who knows, maybe there is something new that will help you. Maybe those silicone injections? You could mention those to your doctor.
  11. I should have said POSSIBLE side effects. But nevertheless, it is devastating for the people it hits. I don't know how high the risk is, but for something like that, any risk is too high. I am sorry your back is that bad. Chiropractic may halt some of those problems, but I am afraid that nothing can fix your back, it is probably too late for that. I...
  12. One of the side effects of Fosamax is necrosis (rotting) of the jaw. Not a nice idea. I believe the way those meds work is, that they prevent the bone from renewing itself. It won't get rid of the old cells, but just adds new ones. The problem with this is, that even though the bone looks denser on the scans, it is also more brittle and more prone to fractures...
  13. You sure sound like you have celiac disease as well. There is no such a thing as mild celiac disease. You either have it or you don't. For some people the only obvious symptom is anemia! You don't have to have the same symptoms as your daughter, or many at all. I always thought it was normal to fluctuate from diarrhea to constipation all my life, too....
  14. It is perfectly safe for you to keep breastfeeding your baby. Your IGA should go down very quickly on a gluten-free diet, and your milk shouldn't be a concern for anybody when that happens.
  15. I am very glad for you on both accounts.
  16. I figured it out at age 52. My mother, who undoubtedly had celiac disease all her life, died of liver cancer at age 66 and was never diagnosed. Many here suffered needlessly for decades because of ignorant doctors. Some people just choose to be ignorant. No doubt he is one of those ignorant doctors we all love to hate! And of course, the apple...
  17. I see in your signature that you have been gluten-free only three months. That is not enough time to really be well by a long shot. Also, being intolerant to raw veggies won't be forever. After eliminating gluten from my diet it took me six months before I could even tolerate a small amount of raw carrots or green salad again, and I wasn't able to tolerate...
  18. You had an autoimmune response to gluten. Your results may only indicate that your villi weren't totally destroyed yet. As has been noted before, it is irrelevant how high your test scores are. If you have elevated levels, you are every bit as much of a celiac as the person with really high levels. You had the symptoms, and I assume you got better without...
  19. Jerry, that's great. I love the picture. Will your local newspaper hire freelance photographers? My daughter (who studied photography) worked every second weekend for our newspaper for a while, and got paid by the picture. They'd send her on assignments to cover (often she'd write the story that went with it), and fairly frequently (for larger events) she...
  20. Jerry, that's beautiful, especially with the moon as well. You really have an eye for amazing shots.
  21. Hi Rolland, and welcome to this board. You know, even kids that don't have celiac disease can grow late. Two of my brothers and my son (who may or may not have celiac disease, I don't know at this point) were extremely short until about 16 years old. In their sixteenth year they just shot up and grew a foot or more in a year. My youngest brother, who was...

    ARCHIVED Wow

I liked the blue better. But then I am not known to like change. I'll get used to it eventually.
  23. Gloria, I agree with Nicole. Dairy has been shown to cause constipation and it sounds like it could be your nephew's main problem. It is possible that gluten is a problem as well, of course, especially since many people with celiac disease are also dairy intolerant. But for starters, I think taking dairy away from him might be enough to relieve the constipation...
  24. Hi Meredith, and welcome to these boards. I will try to answer your questions as best as I can. *Is this related to celiac disease? Not only is it related to celiac disease, having DH means that you have celiac disease. *Does this mean I have celiac or should be tested? I am concerned because my grandmother died of stomach and colon cancer. She...
  25. I have never heard that breastfeeding a baby could cause a false negative for the mother's blood work. On the other hand, those blood tests are not very reliable in picking up celiac disease. Since you tested positive four years ago, you should have tried the gluten-free diet, even with a negative biopsy. Apparently, you had a very uninformed GI. The damage...
