  1. Sarah, an allergy and an intolerance are not the same thing. You can test negative for a dairy allergy and be very intolerant to dairy. The same goes for gluten. Allergy testing will only catch immediate reactions, but will miss delayed ones. Obviously, you know that already, as you have seen the reaction she has to dairy. It is extremely unlikely for...
  2. I don't like saying this, but seeing how much rice you eat, it makes it even more likely as a culprit. I will just eat vegetables and meat (and I have just a few veggies I can eat that aren't high in salicylates), and the only fruit I can eat is peeled pears, and the occasional golden delicious apple. No spices, no herbs, no honey, no teas other than chamomile...
  3. Oh goodness, you have already cut out the most common (and not so common) allergens! Try taking out nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) next to see if it makes a difference. It could also be rice, unfortunately. I can't tolerate rice, either, as it's a grain. And I am intolerant to all grains. Once her issues resolve (if you figure it...
  4. I have gone to lots of restaurants (both fast food and regular) when doing long-distance driving to visit my kids. If I am by myself, I just bring my food, pull over, and eat wherever I am. If there are others, we go and order everybody else's food. If it's a fast food place, I'll get mine out when we sit down with the trays. If it's a regular restaurant...
  5. One of my daughters got married almost two weeks ago (tomorrow it will be two weeks). The caterer made sure there was safe food for me, and I brought my own dessert and my own salad dressing. Two of my grandchildren ate my dessert too, as they are obviously gluten intolerant as well. Unless they are prepared to make sure you are safe, they can't expect...
  6. Oops, we were posting at the same time. Try eliminating dairy and soy to see if it helps, and if it doesn't, look for whatever else could be the cause.
  7. A six month old absolutely can have celiac disease. Are you breastfeeding your baby? If you are, and you are eating gluten, so does she. The same applies to dairy. A lot of babies are thought to be intolerant to breastmilk and are switched to formulas, when the problem is that the baby is intolerant to gluten and/or dairy or soy, and the mother is consuming...
  8. Lisa, it is not true that there is no other choice than Synthroid here in Canada. Doctors haven't heard of Armour here. But they will prescribe desiccated thyroid, which is the same thing. I know, because that is what my doctor is prescribing for me. And if your body is having trouble converting T4 to T3, then Synthroid is not going to help. So, if...
  9. I believe it is because for people who are intolerant to gluten, it acts like an opiate on the brain. We were addicted to gluten the same way people get addicted to street drugs, it made us feel good emotionally at the same time it made us feel physically sick. It could give us a high even though it could cause depression and other emotional problems as well...
  10. All I can think of is, to just copy the recipes and paste them into your word-processing program (Microsoft Word or Works, whichever it is you have). Then you can change the size, font, whatever you want before printing it out. Also, then you can save it to your hard drive, in case you want to print it again for somebody else (or if you lose your printed...
  11. Are you still consuming dairy? That is a possible reason why you still have diarrhea despite being gluten-free. Try eliminating all gluten and dairy (and I'd recommend soy as well) to see if it makes a difference.
  12. Actually, that is not accurate. There are no false positives with the blood work. But there are plenty of false negatives. The same goes for the biopsy. Jody, since you already had the biopsy, you obviously have celiac disease. The next step is to start the gluten-free diet, which you should do immediately. Trying the diet is the best test anyway. If you...
  13. Maybe the soy lecitin? I've heard here that sometimes you feel worse before you feel better when taking probiotics. Maybe you need to try them for longer, or maybe you need to try a different brand to see if it works better.
  14. Grey, those numbers are bad, which should be expected with the level of damage in your gut, unfortunately. You need iron shots. I don't know how you are supposed to get the other things. You may just have to tough it out until your gut heals, so you can absorb your nutrients. The vitamin D level is terrible, that alone would make you quite ill. Try...
  15. You know, there is no way your doctor can see if it is celiac disease with the naked eye. The biopsy results could very well still come back celiac disease. But I am glad your doctor signed the paper saying you should be eating gluten-free. Don't bother with the Prilosec for now, your dad is right, eliminating gluten may well take care of the excess bile...
  16. Hi, and welcome to this board. You are right when you suspect that your son never had any viral infections, but is rather gluten intolerant. I get 'sinus' infections and what looks like ear infections from gluten, too. The sinus and ear problems along with diarrhea and upper respiratory infections (which I get as well), plus his dramatic improvement off...
  17. I agree with Tom. You absolutely need to go on that candida diet! Eliminating gluten, dairy and soy wouldn't hurt, either, as those are very hard on your digestive system (not to mention the rest of your body). If your tongue is coated like that, your candida must be pretty severe. No wonder you feel lousy and have no energy.
  18. We sent our son to Germany when he was 12, to stay with my family for six weeks. He flew from Toronto to Amsterdam, and had to change flights there to get on a plane to Hamburg. They had all the unaccompanied children who had a stopover in a locked room with food, games, tv etc., with people watching them at all times. I think he had a two hour wait. Whenever...
  19. Gluten is in wheat, rye, barley and triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye), and in oats because of a contamination issue. So, if you only eliminated wheat you aren't really gluten-free yet.
  20. Alamaz, your post was an eye opener for me, I almost forgot that I used to have so little strength in my hands at times (it would come and go) that I was unable to hold a cup with one hand, and had to use both hands! I also couldn't pour things or do dishes. I guess I used to have PN as well without knowing it! It is completely gone now, 20 months after starting...
  21. For myself, I had no intentions of eating gluten another HOUR after figuring out it was what was making me so sick. Good dietary response along with a positive blood test also confirms celiac disease. Biopsies are only accurate if they are taken from a damaged area. If the damaged parts of your bowel are missed, you'll end up with a false negative. Biopsies...
  22. I guess it is slow here around lunch time. There are quite a few people here who have peripheral neuropathy, which has improved on the gluten-free diet. If people had it for a long time, it may not get completely better, and progress is slow. IBS is not a real diagnosis, even if doctors would like you to think that. All it means is, that something is...
  23. Hi Katheryne, and welcome to this board. What an ignorant doctor you have! Did she take biopsies of those red areas? It is NOT possible to tell if the villi are damaged with the naked eye, you can only see it with a microscope. And if there is redness, then something isn't right. The villi will get inflamed before they atrophy. Maybe yours aren't...
  24. Susie, have you been tested for deficiencies? Now is definitely the time to know specifically where you need to supplement to make sure you and baby are both getting the vitamins and minerals you need. I believe the reason for miscarriages with celiac disease is that the right nutrients aren't there to sustain the baby. Ask your doctor to test for folic acid...
  25. Are you sure you are just lactose intolerant and aren't intolerant to casein?
