ARCHIVED Celiac & Breastfeeding Info
Idahogirl replied to angielackner's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Just curious, for those who talked about breastfeeding every 1 to 1.5 hours, for how long did you do this? I know I am going against the grain and most lactation specialists disagree with me, but I don't believe in on-demand feeding. Not that I think scheduling is right either, if you ignore the baby's hunger cues. I read a really good book called On Becoming... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Broth
Idahogirl replied to elfkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I add cornstarch to make it thicker. I am also curious about Wyler's bullion, we have jars of chicken and beef in the fridge. I think they have some ingredients that are suspect, but not obvious. Lisa -
This link was posted on our local celiac forum, and I thought I'd share. It has a lot of information about the laws and a good explanation of why this happened in the first place. Open Original Shared Link Lisa

ARCHIVED Pregnant And Craving Cereal- Help
Idahogirl replied to michaunj's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I made sweet n sour chicken the other night-I have been craving Chinese since I've been pregnant, but haven't been able to have any. I found the recipe somewhere on this site. You use equal parts rice flour and cornstarch (I used one cup each), add one egg, then room temp. water until it is the consistency of pancake batter. Dip your cut up chicken in... -
I cheated a couple days after I started the diet, thinking it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I had a huge hotdog on the bun. I had stopped taking Dapsone, so my skin was inflamed for days. There was another time that a friend brought what she thought were gluten free treats to Bible study (she even looked up the recipe on the internet). They had Rice...

ARCHIVED celiac disease Is Big Time News!
Idahogirl replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Publications & Publicity
I am still confused. Aren't they going to do more testing to see if the oil contains gluten specifically? If the gluten was removed in the processing of the flavoring ingredient, then it couldn't be responsible for the kid's problems, and it is still gluten free. Sounds like they are jumping the gun, and the tests should be able to prove if the "agent... -

Ours has a leopard pattern on him, and he's starting to get some orange, too, especially on his underside. He is not totally full grown yet. He is the coolest cat ever! Except when he's a snob and doesn't want anything to do with me. But when he's feeling cuddly, he's my baby! He was a stray who adopted us. He started out as Chloe and now he's Joey... -
ARCHIVED Real People Cereal
Idahogirl replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Safeway's version of Corn Pops is gluten free. I like Cocoa Pebbles, Barbara's Corn Flakes, and Rice Crunch 'ems, too. It's better to have a little variety, the same cereal everyday can get so tiring! Lisa -

ARCHIVED Graham Crackers
Idahogirl replied to Kristen2Denise's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My husband does that cereal thing, too! I have to buy at least a couple of boxes at a time, because he'll eat one package at a time in a bowl with milk. I'd never even thought of that before I married him! I miss graham crackers, especially with milk. -

Dumb question: how do you know you have the oil at 375 degrees? Is that medium high? -
I have been craving Chinese food for sooooo long now, and this thread is making me hungry! Maybe there's hope! Lisa

I wonder what the science is behind removing the protein from the grain. Sounds simple enough. The gluten is only part of the wheat, not the actual wheat, right? So, why the big deal? If it's true, then their fries are safe for us after all. Maybe it's more complicated than I realize. Also, if this really is the "evolution of science", will this affect...

ARCHIVED Really Interesting Article On How It All Began...
Idahogirl replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Publications & Publicity
I lost interest when he started talking about evolution. No, thanks. If that's his starting point, I'm not interested in any of the rest of his conclusions. Lisa -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Is Big Time News!
Idahogirl replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Publications & Publicity
I love McDonald's fries (as a treat, not every day!). I'm wondering if what they said about "cooking the gluten out" is true, like with vinegar. Should be interesting. I'm tired of giving up the few delicious things in life I have left to hold on to. They are so far and few in between, and it seems like they are slowly disappearing. It's time people... -
ARCHIVED New Book--living Gluten-free For Dummies
Idahogirl replied to Moongirl's topic in Publications & Publicity
My husband was telling me that he met the guy who wrote the first "for dummies" book (I guess he lives in our area), and since he has it copyrighted he makes a ton of royalties off of all the copycat books! It would be nice to be that guy..... -

I thought I read on another string that Safeway's version of corn pops are gluten free. Does anyone know if this is true? -
I was watching Conan O'Brien last night and one of his guests was Sarah Vowell. She is an author and also did the voice for Violet in The Incredibles. One of her comments was how playing a superhero only accentuated her weaknesses, one of which is being allergic to wheat. Conan thought it was hilarious that there is a community for people with "wheat allergies...

If you have a Q'Doba in the area, they have a gluten free menu. You can order any of the burritos without the flour tortilla, and ask for a white corn tortilla on the side, and make your own burritos! Or you can get tacos with the corn tortilla, but this is very messy! Plus they can't fit all of the stuff they put in burritos in there. Taco Bell's website...

ARCHIVED Cat Food...cause Of My Itching?-
Idahogirl replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel lucky to have such an easy cat. He's never messed anywhere but the litter box, rarely coughs up furballs, and doesn't shed much. And he's the sweetest kitty ever! He does try to lick my nose all the time, which drives me insane! When I push him away, he just looks at me as if to say "but I love you!". I have my son feed him, and I haven't had... -
I can relate to what everyone has said. We are looking for a church right now, and it seems that all of the activities to welcome newcomers revolve around food. Friendship dinners, Valentine's dinner social, welcome dinner (these were the three things announced at the church we went to this morning). I don't want the first impression that people have of...

I learned the hard way: use the miniature marshmallows. The big ones take forever to melt. The small ones are so much faster and easier! -
ARCHIVED What Specifically Should I Look For On Labels?

For tomato soup, try Pacific Natural Foods organic creamy tomato soup. It comes in a box, and they have it at a lot of grocery stores. Tastes just like Campbell's. I tried another gluten free kind, and it had a weird taste to it, and did not have the "creamy" taste. Lisa -
ARCHIVED Prepackaged gluten-free Flour Vs. Homemade
Idahogirl replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was using Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free bread mix, and then decided to try a recipe from scratch. It was very crumbly, and the texture wasn't all that great. I used the Bette Hagman's flour mix (mixed myself-rice flour, potato starch, tapioca starch). I haven't expiremented with any other homemade recipes, but have gone back to using mixes. Although,... -
