  1. Yes. I work out regularly or I USED TO until the last year. I've felt so awful in the last year that it's affected my work and my work outs. Many days I was just too exhausted, some of the time it was from sinus infections, some of the time it was from joint pain, some times just felt yucky. I haven't lost weight though, I've actually gained, but hoping that will go away as I start to heal and get more active again. I'm already feeling a bit more energetic and have a lot less joint pain so I'm optimistic for the coming year.

  2. I don't get up to San Francisco much, but in the South Bay Area we have PF Changs and Outback. I'm so new all all this that I haven't really ventured out to eat much yet...but I understand PF Changs and Outback each have gluten free items/menus. There is a health food store in Cupertino called Cupertino Nutrition which stock a lot of gluten-free stuff like Kinnickinnick breads, donuts, etc. We also have Whole Foods stores which carry some good gluten-free items.

  3. Hi and welcome! I'm fairly new to all this myself but I'll give my opinions on as many of your questions as I can.

    1. You do need to be careful. A little bit of gluten can definitely hurt you...you may not feel the effects right away but you most assuredly will still be damaging your intestines even with a little bit, if you truly have celiac or an intolerance. As far as products, some people can react to products used if it is likely to get into your mouth in any way...think hand lotion and then touching any area close to your mouth.

    2. Many people are also intolerant to either the lactose (which is the sugar) in dairy or the casein (the protein) in dairy. I am intolerant to both gluten and casein, so no wheat, rye, barley, oats or dairy for me. All diary has casein, but some people have been able to tolerate goats or sheep's milk products. I'm not taking a chance right now because I'm still having bowel issues. :D

    3. Love peanut butter. I eat a natural kind with no added ingredients...just peanuts and salt.

    4. I don't often buy in bulk. I've heard that the bulk bins can be a source of contamination because people often use one scoop for a couple of different items, or even if they don't if they've scooped flour then scooped nuts, it might be enough in some people to cause a reaction.

    5. Soy nuts are okay if you tolerate soy well.

    6. Packages don't necessarily have to say gluten free to be okay, but look for any added ingredients. I picked up a rice pilaf mix (the kind in a bag, not in a box) at the health food store and when I read the ingredients found barley in it.

    7. I do use cocoa powder, but I have to be careful of dairy, so I read ingredients very closely...the current one is one I bought from Whole Foods but can't remember the name right now.

    8. I use soymilk sparingly because I haven't yet determined if I'm sensitive to it. Silk brand is safe as are many others, but some do use malt in their processing so be careful.

    9. Can't help on spices, I don't use anything excep salt.

    10. Kind of the same answer as #6. You just have to look for unspecified ingredients such as "natural flavorings" those are the kinds of things that can be trouble unless they specify where the flavoring comes from.

    11. I don't eat tofu so can't comment.

    12. Sorry don't know what becel is.

    13. Mostly anything that says flavoring unless it specifies where it came from...although there are many other things which are hidden.

  4. dlp152-

Here is a link to go to for where to eat in Disneyland. It is the basic information that I got over the phone Open Original Shared Link. Keep in mind this is for Disneyland in CA.

The only thing new is the mexican restarant in Frontier Land now has a celiac menu. Ask for it when you go in. All of the Disneyland hotels have gluten-free options as well. There did not seem to be as many options in California Adventure. None of the resturants in between Disneyland and California Adventure are run by Disney. So eating there is like eating anywhere else, risky.

    Hope you have fun!

    Hez

Thanks Hez, yes, we're going to Disneyland in CA! I never did call when I got home yesterday, lol. I wonder if someone is there on weekends? :D Thanks for the link!

  5. I have the DQ8 gene which isn't as common as DQ2. I'm curious about others with similar genes and what their health conditions are b/c I wonder if there are any trends associated with this gene combination. My test results showed problems with gluten and casein. I also have seasonal allergies and a number of mild food allergies. And probably totally unrelated, but b/c there is believed to be a genetic component will mention it--have severe adverse reaction to fluoroquinolones that affect my tendons.

I have DQ8. Also have seasonal and year round allergies. I have lots of intestinal symptoms and a lot of lightheadedness and brain fog, joint pain, acid reflux, and many more, lol. I am also casein intolerant and have other sensitivities which I haven't nailed down yet. I only showed 4 slight reactions when I had my food allergy test about 3 years ago...there may be more now though.

  6. I feel like a kid. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! My family is planning on going to Disneyland (CA) in March. I made reservations for breakfast and mentioned my gluten-free restrictions. This person was telling me no problem, they make gluten-free pancakes. Well, I knew this but for her to know this impressed me (all she does is take dining reservations for all of the restarants). Then I asked her about procedures for finding out where in the park I can eat. She immediatly transfered me to a chef. This person called me back very quickly and took the time to go through where and what I can eat. Then I just received a call from the chef who runs the restarant where we are eating breakfast. He assured me of all the yummy options I will have to choose from. Who knew that eating gluten-free could be so easy? I REALLY think this is the happiest place on earth! Did I mention I can have french fries!

Hez (who can hardly contain herself)

Hez, that is exciting!!! I'm going next weekend (12th)!!!! I really must call today when I get home from work. I'm going with two other friends so I'm not sure where we'll be eating (one likes fast food and burger type food, the other likes just about anything) but if they can give me an idea of which places, that would be a start! I was planning on taking some Lara Bars, peanut butter and trail mix to snack on just in case, but maybe I won't have to pack the supermarket like I thought I would, lol!

  7. Have you ever seen this? - Guidelines to Eating gluten-free at Disneyland

    Open Original Shared Link

It says some of the places there carry Kinnikinnik bread. Crazy!

Wow, thanks for the link...it has some great information!

Cupertino Nutrition is WONDERFUL...they are so helpful and they did indeed have a great selection.

Pturse - I've had one of the Whole Foods employees joke about Whole Paycheck, so something tells me they've heard that before. :D

  8. I have to say I never even heard of this disease until 4 weeks ago. I thought I could loose weight eating healthier. It seems to me that alot of the gluten free stuff is ladden with cane juice no wonder there's weight gain! I haven't found much thats tasty gluten free. I've been sticking with fruits and veggies and meats. I feel like the extra weight i put on should melt off but thats not happening! I'm totally freaked out! I'm only 5'2' and I put on 30 lbs. Managed to shed ten and there she stopped like a train wreck! I'm bloated and miserable! It's like bad PMS!!!

Yep, I've put on about 4 or 5 pounds, but I know it's mostly because I've been eating the gluten free products instead of the basic meats, fruits and veggies. I'm sorry you're feeling so poorly!

  9. I thought egg subs were off the list for can't have's? Is it possible that the body goes through de-tox and it may take me sometime to loose? I've been told that before and I wonder if it's true.

I think it's true in my case....I don't know about the egg substitutes, but I am definitely feeling like I'm going through a detox!

  10. hi guys, I've been getting weird burning type pain in my right elbow, the right side of my back [bra strap area] and the right groin. I've had a CT scan and ultra sound in the last month..both ok..it feels like its on fire with pain..oh ya..I also have a weird bumpy rash on the right side at the rib area

thanks bunches..starting to scare me..could it be food realated?

I get a burning sensation in my skin....feels like a really bad sunburn but there's no redness or rash. Does the rash go around your rib kind of like a belt? You know, in a thin strip around your waist/rib area?

  11. Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but if I have a little, and see that I'm okay, I start to think, hey maybe I can have a little more, a little more, etc. Until I have to kick myself for 'letting go.'

Bingo! And, then it becomes a serious craving, then I have to start all over again with trying to break the habit, lol.
