ARCHIVED New Member - Long Standing Cs (long Post)
elye replied to RKB-MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome, Dr. Russ! I haven't been able to read all of this post, but I noticed several suggestions of things to ease glutening symptoms. Dr. Joseph Mercola talks a great deal about probiotics, and how a large dose of them works unbelievably well and quickly to fend off traveller's diarrhea. This may be something to try...I believe he suggested ten caplets... -
ARCHIVED Why Get A Biopsy?
elye replied to Mayflowers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We also had a rare experience with a very with-it GP. My dad has had celiac symptoms for years, and he recently had inconclusive blood test results. When he questioned his family doc about having a biopsy, the doc said, "your intestinal tract is twenty-two feet long. Chances are excellent that tiny samples taken from it, even if there are many, will not... -
Oh, I needed that...Excellent, Chelsea. Probably the only truly flattering pic of me in existence. And you ain't no standard poodle, yourself!

ARCHIVED Anybody Heard Of Zonulin?
elye replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, very informative...thanks for all that! I've just been at another post where zonulin was mentioned, and I'll bring up my point here, too. The news about a commercial drug on the horizon to treat the symptoms of celiac is INCREDIBLE news for us, not only because we will have the option of relieving the symptoms, but because celiac will suddenly become... -
Yes, sad but true...no condition is going to be talked about too much until there are big, expensive drugs associated with its control. Celiac has a cure--diet--so the big pharaceuticals don't want anything to do with it. Zonulin may help to get them taking a second look. ...And maybe Oprah has stocks in the Zonulin company.... ...Hell, she probably...

ARCHIVED Need Some Help
elye replied to mike2184's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Glad you're on the right track! Sounds like you're proactive and really know what you're doing, so I'm sure you know the answer to this: do you have blood sugar issues? I know that one symptom I get when my BS is unexplicably high is a slight tingling on one side of my face. Tingling lips are very often present with HYPOglycemia, as well, but you would... -
I was part of that Oprah email campaign that we instigated last year. It was very well organized, and went on the premise that we, as a huge group, INUNDATE her corporate office with letter upon letter. In fact, there were shifts put in place...everyone with a last name A-H wrote at the beginning of the week, then I-P a few days later, and so on, and then...

ARCHIVED What's The Deal With Soy?
elye replied to mythreesuns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Back to the soy for a sec--I have been reading and abiding by everything Dr. Joseph Mercola has said for years now (www.mercola.com). He warns everybody to stay completely away from UNFERMENTED soy, which is the common stuff--tofu, food additives, TVP. But FERMENTED soy (tempeh, miso) is in fact very beneficial for your health, as all properly fermented... -
ARCHIVED Okay, About Oats...
elye posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have a question for you all: The one thing I really do miss in this diet is my morning oatmeal. I know about how the gluten in oats is not toxic for many celiacs, and I also know about the cross-contamination issues with the big North American oat brands out there. Hence, I stay away from oats as I am wary of cross-contamination. I know that oats that... -
Weight-bearing simply means you are bearing your weight, so anything other than swimming is considered weight-bearing. When an activity involves one foot always being in contact with the floor, it is considered low-impact. If at any time during an activity both feet (or both skis, in the case of downhill skiing) leave the ground at the same time (running...

It's the very best. Not so great for your joints, but superb for bone density...
-
Skipping is terrific!...Get a good sports bra...
-
Weight-bearing exercise means, quite literally, exercise where you are bearing your own weight. Therefore, the only exercise that is not weight-bearing is swimming. Impact is another ballgame--exercises like biking, elliptical training and skiing are no-impact because your feet are never lifted--literally, no impact. Walking is low-impact, as your feet...

ARCHIVED Untreated Celiac And Mini-strokes
elye replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey, Beverly, You know, I'm actually feeling (physically) very well. I went for a blistering run this morning, I think to run away from all of this, and it did take me away from it, at least for a while. But you guys are a big part of my therapy, there's no question. I think of your husband now, Beverly, and hope all is well with him. And of course with... -
ARCHIVED Untreated Celiac And Mini-strokes
elye replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for all your responses, guys, you really are awesome. Of all people, it was my GP, NOT my endocrinologist, NOT my new neurologist, NOT my gastroentirologist, and NOT my diabetes eye specialist (yep, I've talked to ALL of them since this happened!) who brought up a possible connection to celiac disease and the TIA. It could very well be arbitrary... -
Wow, cdfamily, thanks for that great post...very informative. No, I have no other neurological symptoms, and had nothing but the double vision when I had this episode last week. This would be a brand new glutening symptom for me, as I've never had it before. It's all very odd...I'm getting an MRI done, so that may provide some answers, or it may not. ...

Hey, debmidge, Could try the sepia...it is known for absence of side-effects and contraindications. Although I know when depression is situational, it can seem like NOTHING will help. Keep strong! Sepia is available in most health-food stores, sometimes by order. I take six drops of the liquid when I'm too sad to get through the day.
-
Hi, Robbin, I have always had BP readings at around 115/65. And great cholesterol, too. I guess this is why I am wondering if it could have been a glutening symptom rather than a TIA. I think I have heard mention of some visual problems occurring with accidental glutening on the board, but I'm not sure about double vision. I am now on a daily ASA since...
-
Hey, all, Has anyone experienced double vision, and attributed it to being glutened? I experienced sudden double vision last week while at the gym. I rushed to the ER, where I spent all day in observation waiting for a CT scan. I had no other symptoms, just the bizarre double-vision, and it cleared up after about two hours. My scan came back normal,...

Just a warning about St.John's Wort: it can seriously contraindicate a number of other medications, so if you are on oral contraceptives, blood thinners, SSRIs or some steroids, this herb can compromise their effectiveness. When I can't seem to get happy, I find great success with sepia. It is the ink from the cuttlefish, and has super mood-lifting properties...

ARCHIVED Do They Put Your "out" For The Biopsy?
elye replied to Chelle15's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My endoscope was no big deal. I had the spray so the back of my throat was frozen, which felt unusual but certainly not painful. I was sedated, but I told them "just enough to make me really relaxed". And that's exactly what they did. It depends on your personality--I do not like being unconscious and out of my own control. If you're okay with being... -
ARCHIVED New Here...and Nervous
elye replied to Brit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, ditto with the no-problem endoscope for me. The spray freezes the back of your throat, which feels unusual but certainly not painful, and there is absolutely no pain during the process. I was given the option of sedation, and I said, "yeah, but just enough that I'm really relaxed". It was fine! -
ARCHIVED Great Paper On The Neurological Manifestations
elye replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow, this is so timely! Thanks so much for this article, ravenwoodglass. I'm going to my first appointment this aft with my new neurologist after I had a sudden TIA last week (at least, this is what the ER docs suspected it was) and I will bring this along! -
Quick question...I was checking the label out on a carton of ice cream today at the grocery store, and everything looked safe. Then I came to "stabilizers". I wasn't sure, so I didn't buy it. I've checked my gluten encyclopedia reference book and they don't have a listing for "stabilizers". Does anyone know if stabilizers mean possible gluten?

ARCHIVED Dr.s Are Frustrating Me...
elye replied to num1habsfan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Seems like we all have a waiting list story...Just two days ago I was rushed into ER with what was possibly a transient ischemic stroke, and waited two hours to get into observation (clot-busting drugs need to be administered within three hours), and then another four hours to get a CT scan. Now really, possible heart/brain attacks MUST be addressed immediately...
