Swollen ankles and feet
knitty kitty replied to jantwins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello! Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins. While you're healing, you may not be able to absorb all you need, and supplementing may be necessary. Vitamin D and the B complex vitamins are often low in newly diagnosed people. Here's an interesting article on how low vitamin levels may be contributing to the edema. http:... -
ARCHIVED Canker Sore/mouth ulcer - worried
knitty kitty replied to cristiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, Cristiana! Sorry to hear you're having a problem. I understand how worrisome mouth sores can be. I've had a few myself. I suspect the sore is tied to getting cross contaminated on your trip. Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which in turn causes malnutrition. Your recent CC may have affected your body's ability to absorb nutrients... -
ARCHIVED Didn't get better...finally an answer
knitty kitty replied to thleensd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you had any tests for vitamin deficiencies? Do you take any vitamins regularly? You said you never felt "normal" after your Celiac diagnosis and upon an increase in activity level you felt worse, and your doctor blamed your symptoms to malnutrition. Were those malnutrition issues ever addressed? You sound sadly resigned to taking pharmaceuticals...- 11 replies

ARCHIVED Docs can't seem to figure me out - wondering if anyone has had similar experiences
knitty kitty replied to LaurainAZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Let the new doctors test your vitamin levels before you start supplementing because the results won't come out accurately. The four D's of pellagra are diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia and death. Deficiency diseases don't just happen to alcoholics. They happen to people with malabsorption. Celiacs have malabsorption. So glad that you're going to... -
ARCHIVED Docs can't seem to figure me out - wondering if anyone has had similar experiences
knitty kitty replied to LaurainAZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Laurain, I strongly suggest you take your vitamins! Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition. The B vitamins are water soluble. They need to be replenished every day because your body can't store them. The B vitamins all work together. If you're low in one, you need to take the whole range because they depend... -
ARCHIVED Docs can't seem to figure me out - wondering if anyone has had similar experiences
knitty kitty replied to LaurainAZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, Laurain. Has your doctor considered you might be having a reaction to the synthroid? Did you get any other vitamin levels checked, besides just the vitamin D? Are you taking any vitamin supplements? After experiencing diarrhea for so long, I'm worried that your B vitamins are low. Early symptoms of some B vitamin deficiencies include diarrhea... -
Another source of Sulfites to consider is in medications. Some proton pump inhibitors have sulfites. And dental anesthesia (that numbing shot) often has sulfites added as a preservative. Might explain your recent dental problem.... I developed an ulcer where I got that numbing shot the last time I went for a filling. I was researching and found...

Hi, Ennis! Yes, I have problems with high sulfite foods! I have had to cut out all of those listed foods with some minor exceptions. I have found that I can tolerate Vidalia onions. They are sweet mild onions and have a low amount of sulfites. I can have a few Brussels sprouts and a little broccoli, but avoid cabbage and cauliflower as...

AristotlesCat, You said you tested positive for antibodies. Were the tests specific for gliadin antibodies? Or just antibodies of inflammation in general? Coffee contains polyphenols. The amount of polyphenols can vary with the roasting time of the coffee beans. Perhaps the coffee you've switched to contains more polyphenols. Polyphenols...

A healthy dose of scepticism is essential on the web. But I thought the research was valid. Yes, I agree with the biblical quote being a cheap shot. People often criticise and ridicule novel concepts that they don't want to believe...or have not experienced themselves. Thanks for your input!

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease, Sore throat and swollen glands
knitty kitty replied to Alessio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I apologize for the mistake. Tylenol is not an Nsaid. However, Dexilant is a Ppi (proton pump inhibitor) which may be exacerbating your symptoms, like that previous article I posted said. Hopefully you won't have to take it much longer. And this article explores how medications may be absorbed abnormally with Celiac Disease: https://www.celiac... -
Thanks for the input. Interesting commentaries. The authors of the article rebute the criticisms here: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease, Sore throat and swollen glands
knitty kitty replied to Alessio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Alessio, So sorry you're having such a rough go of it. You might want to reconsider using NSAIDs. There's evidence that use of Nsaids, Ppi's, and Ssri's are linked to persistent villus damage. Open Original Shared Link And you and your doctor should consider vitamin deficiencies. Celiac Disease causes malabsorption. Malabsorption... -

knitty kitty replied to maclu5757's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! Um, please forgive my quirky sense of humor..... Celiac Disease is genetic... All first degree relatives of people diagnosed with Celiac Disease should be tested for the disease, too. Gall bladder problems are often associated with Celiac Disease. Your diagnosis might save your whole family from further medical problems as they age and the... -
ARCHIVED Has anyone found anything that works?
knitty kitty replied to This sucks.'s topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Nicotinamide helps a great deal. Nicotinamide is a form of Vitamin B3, also called Niacin. Many new Celiacs have trouble absorbing sufficient vitamins and minerals because of intestinal damage. Malabsorption causes malnutrition. Deficiencies of the B Complex vitamins, especially niacin, and vitamins A and D often manifest as skin rashes and exacerbate... -

knitty kitty replied to MelissaNZ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
MelissaNZ, Has your daughter been checked for vitamin deficiencies??? Vitamin D deficiency symptoms include urinary incontinence, oral candidiasis (thrush), skin rashes, bumps on the backs of arms, joint pain, distended stomach and short stature. Bones can't grow much without vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency causes delayed gastric emptying (food... -
GeorgeW, Hi. I'm sorry you're feeling ill and are frustrated finding answers. I understand. I spend a bit of time researching how Celiac Disease and the resulting malnutrition can affect us. I'm not a doctor. I'm a microbiologist. You said you were very careful with your gluten free diet, so I believe you weren't glutenized. However, vitamin...

knitty kitty replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Mermaid's Mom and Ennis! I gotta disagree here. I don't think it's just the oats in the Cheerios causing problems. I think it's the corn starch in the Cheerios. I had reactions to Cheerios, but I can eat certified gluten free oats just fine. It's the corn starch component that I have a problem with. I have a reaction to corn and gluten... -
ARCHIVED Possible celiac disease? Arthritis and rash....
knitty kitty replied to emt852's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello. After reading this thread, I wondered if an allergy or hypersensitivity reaction to sulfa drugs might be a possible explanation for the itchy rash and arthritis pain. It sounded so similar to my symptoms when I was on sulfa medications. I did a little research and came across this website that explains so much. I hope it's helpful. Open Original... -
Horrible Pressure Headaches After Eating
knitty kitty replied to lemonade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anil, I'm so glad you are feeling better! The article suggests 600mg of magnesium (too much magnesium will cause diarrhea), 400mg of riboflavin (too much will cause tingling or flushing), and 500mg of omega 3. I took my supplements in divided doses with each meal. I also take a B-Complex vitamin that has 50mg of all the B vitamins and 400mg... -
Horrible Pressure Headaches After Eating
knitty kitty replied to lemonade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anil, I understand how uncomfortable migraines can be. I've suffered from them for many years, too. Does the rash get worse when exposed to sunlight? It looks like it is on your neck, hands, forearms, shins and feet. Does the rash occur anywhere else? Or just to areas exposed to sunshine? I had Pellagra, a vitamin deficiency disease caused by a lack of Niacin, B3. I had a similar rash on exposed areas that worsened when I was outside in the sun...
