  1. I think that this is a very valid point. Going completely gluten-free can be expensive when the whole family is on the diet. But over time as you learn to cook with whole, fresh foods....it can be turned around to be less expensive. I do most of our grocery shopping at Marc's where their meats and organic produce is much less expensive than at our...
  2. I imagine that this is one of those things where the answer will go either way equally. My dd definitely had as much water going out as she did going in. I suppose that if your dd's urine were dark in color as opposed to being clear, that it may just be she isn't drinking enough water. I'm not sure how you keep track of that with a child still in diapers...
  3. Your story is very similar to a lot of our stories. Not many of us were lucky enough to be diagnosed quickly, much less diagnosed at all. With Shaye, 3 pedis and 2 GIs were completely clueless. Their advice was constantly the same when dealing with Shaye's FTT, frequent stools and overactive behavior. Dr.: "She needs to be fed more pasta, bread and...
  4. The cookie sheet idea is an excellent idea! Thank you! As for them eating on the floor....I don't know what that's about. They have a plush area rug which is a no shoes/story time place for them to sit and it was mentioned after the first glutening that they were eating their snacks on it while listening to a story. Other times, they have gone to...
  5. LOL!! You KNOW that I'll be sending over anything that you need. You know, it seems that a lot of the members of your other allergy board are now moving into the gluten sensitive/celiac side. I wonder if there's a bigger connection than we all would suspect. Personally....I think so. First me, then Kensie, then Aziah and now you. I'm sure...
  6. All of the symptoms you are describing can be related to Celiac disease. It is so incredibly frustrating to see these symptoms making your child miserable and then have it brushed off by doctors because every other test they are running is coming back "normal". It's no small wonder that it takes an average 11 years to get a diagnosis in this country. In...
  7. There are many that are dairy-free. For dd, I buy Metagenics brand Bifobifidus and Acidophilus. I've also found that eating a bit of chili helps me. I assume it's because of the glutamine found in meat and beans which soothes the small bowel. Glutamine deficiencies are pretty rampant among us and is pretty crucial for keeping the intestines healthy...
  8. That is absolutely awesome news. So glad to hear of another person benefitting from this lifestyle! As simple as it seems, these small efforts we put forward into the world can completely turn a life around for the better. So how quickly did the smile spread upon your face? lol!! What a beautiful thing it must have been to see. Thanks for sharing...
  9. I don't know about the Propel.....but for us, a dose of probiotics works pretty well. It's also a great thing to have for colds, flus and general illnesses of a bacterial nature. Hope she feels better soon!
  10. Oh Heather...I REMEMBER those days when we first discussed the potential sources of the diarrhea and we went back and forth between soy and gluten. That had to be over a year ago. And it's almost pathetic that you figured it out on your own then....and once again had the moxy to figure it out now. Thank goodness you've been so diligent and persistent with...
  11. Oh man. I hadn't even considered the handsoap everyone else uses! This is NOT good. I think that I'll be having a very serious talk with the teacher on Tuesday as to where to go next. Guess I'll be buying some handsoap in bulk this year.
  12. The issue of playdough in this case, may or may not apply. The teacher went out and purchased gluten-free playdough for Shaye's class. But you know, it could be a possibility as 2 other classes share that room (different days) and I don't know if the other classes are using gluten-free playdough or not. And if so, I don't know what their cleaning schedule...
  13. I'm hoping some of you can share your wisdom and help me figure out what's going on with dd. She started pre-school 3 weeks ago and it feels like she is having reactions or side effects from exposures nearly every day at school. She only goes 2 days per week, but the side effects are sucking up most of the week and the poor thing needs a break! Our situation...
  14. There is a list of ingredients to avoid on this site. And there is also always a one-page gluten-free diet "start-up list" in every issue of Living Without magazine. The Delphi Forums also have extensive lists for safe products which are updated continually. That should help get you through the initial phases of finding the right foods. Also on this...
  15. My mother has been going in for Celiac panels and endoscopies for over 9 years now and has yet to be diagnosed. She has the full battery of tests run every 2-3 years and has a colonoscopy every 2. Yet when she remains gluten-free, she "miraculously" does much better and can actually leave the house without planning her day around the presence/absence of...
  16. You know...I did have that same problem. And for us, the issue was that once we went gluten-free, my dd's casein intolerance reared its ugly head. She is 3 now and so help me....EACH and EVERY time she has even a trace amount of casein...she wakes up at some unholy hour in the morning. It's beyond bizarre. But then again, on a casein day, dd wouldn't...
  17. Here's just a small sampling of the recipe sites available to you for gluten-free meals. I have found that the Paleo diet ones are absolutely awesome for those with dairy and gluten issues. And I was shocked at how easy and quick some of the recipes were....without sacrificing flavor or nutrition. The best thing to do in the beginning....keep it simple...
  18. Oh my. I can understand with so much negativity, why you'd be discouraged and need to vent! Any chance that you can hang out with your son more??? I wish that there was something that could be said or done that would help this situation. It's just so sad to hear you aren't getting the support that you need when you do so much to support everyone...
  19. It's a good thing that you have this checked out to rule out any possibilities of something life-threatening. It may also help to set up something with an allergist if other tests come back "normal". Under the Anemia of Chronic Disease that I posted, there was an explanation of how anemia could occur with chronic inflammatory conditions. If you're gluten...
  20. I found several references to dairy preventing iron absorption and a possible explanation connecting a dairy allergy/intolerance to chronic anemia. I hope that this helps. And perhaps it may also be of use to see an allergist in case of an allergy. Open Original Shared Link “Dietary Sources The best dietary sources of iron are liver and o...
  21. Sorry if this is redundant, but by chance, have you tried eliminating dairy? I had read an article a while back that stated 50% of all iron-deficiency anemia was immediatley caused by problems with dairy. Apparently, it can block the uptake of iron. Just a thought. Also, I found this site which talks about studying stools. How appropriate...
  22. All kidding aside, if it were my decision (as to taking colloidal silver), I would research both the allopathic and alternative sites out there and then seek treatment from someone who has a background in both as well. Two heads are always better than one. I sought out a homeopathic MD with my dd and the results were exceptional compared to the 3 pedis...
  23. Stephen Barrett, is about the LAST person I would refer to for honest health information. This is one of the more amusing short articles about him. In fairness, I've quoted directly from an alternative site he has attacked repeatedly. I've read other news articles of how he let his PSYCHIATRIC M.D. license expire (that doesn't really qualify him as an...
  24. If you really want a true idea of whether this is caused by milk, the best thing to do is to take all dairy out of the picture for 3-5 days. Then re-introduce for one day and wait to see if the symptoms come back (give 2-3 days for reactions to occur). This includes all milk-derived ingredients so it probably will be a bit of a challenge, but usually the...
  25. You know, this whole thread is really interesting to see just how different the perspectives are. For me, I *may* have been mortified if my dd was acting up in public (because BELIEVE ME, she did prior to going on a gluten-free/CF diet). But at the same time, we'd spent months at the pedi's and other specialist's offices with NO progress whatsoever...
