  1. Yes, the gluten-free diet is totally possible to do even with the added complication of other food allergies. In order to increase your chances for success, I think it's most important to keep things as simple as humanly possible. Surprisingly that may involve a bit of homework. lol! We have kept our meals very simple here. We bake, broil, steam...
  2. I'd say that yes, it could be a symptom. After my dd was born, I had horrendous foot cramps and pain for over a year. I seriously thought that I had stress fractures in both feet! When we put dd on the diet, I went on as well and the pain cleared up in a matter of days. I've heard many others here report the same thing with foot pain that went away once...
  3. I think that it's human nature to want to blame ourselves or something else when something like this is thrust upon us. The situation often seems completely unfair and it's disheartening to have to go through all of these extra motions while being surrounded by people who are completely oblivious to the monumental efforts we have to make to survive in a...
  4. Personally, if I were to have a second child, I would ignore the studies and not introduce gluten until my child had his/her molars. Why? It's all part of the ptyalin debate I guess...and to me, it makes sense. "Ptyalin and Infant Food. It has traditionally been common to start infants on solid food from 4+ months onwards - however current research and...
  5. The ear infections may or may not be related to Celiac. Another question to ask is....has your dd received the Prevnar vaccine? The reason I ask is because a new "superbug" is being linked to it. And that bug is resistant to all forms of antibiotics, shots, whatever. The only remedy seems to be surgery. There was an article on yahoo about it a few weeks...
  6. In a 15 month old, I would think that positive bloodwork would suffice. The GI will most certainly want to biopsy to verify the bloodwork (though I don't really see the sense as the bloodwork is highly specific to this disease). Considering your son's age....you have to look at the symptoms he's having and make your determination from there. How sick...
  7. LOL!! With bentos....you can't help but be exuberant! My dd isn't going to kindergarten for another year but I've already been looking up bentos like mad. And I've been packing them for myself already (though still waiting for the official kit/container...which does take away from the presentation a bit). It's been kind of funny at work taking in...
  8. My dd also has dairy intolerance and reacts with hyperactive behavior and inability to concentrate. But I would guess that the symptoms of brain fog are entirely possible as well. Food intolerances can manifest in many different ways as we all know. Nutrition status may also be a factor in this reaction. I have found it quite surprising just how much...
  9. This quote is simply fascinating IMO. And I wonder if a certain subset of infants/children are being affected by the following. I've often wondered if the "abnormal trigger factor" could be a specific vaccine? I mean...aren't vaccines specifically made to trigger an immune response in a totally abnormal way (some using live viruses)? I've also...
  10. Multiple food allergies can definitely be quite a challenge. The best thing to do is to find new ways to present foods that you're both okay with. For example, here's a link to a margarita chicken salad recipe: Open Original Shared Link. The recipe calls for strawberries but you could easily sub in fresh raspberries instead. Also, The Cravings Place...
  11. My dd has problems with gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, food colorings and artificial sweeteners. It took us a LONG time to figure all of this out and keeping a food journal definitely helped. I can say that we did notice changes in reactions (as well as varying reactions to increasingly miniscule amounts of these foods). After 2 weeks gluten-free, dd...
  12. Yes, medicine requires certainty while completely bypassing common sense at times. That's a big part of the reason why it takes about 9-11 years to get a Celiac diagnosis in this country. We're so busy trying to get ALL of the tests to come up positive before advising a dietary change (that could completely resolve the situation). Meanwhile, I've seen...
  13. This is so true. My dd is gluten, dairy, egg and soy intolerant. There is rarely an occasion where the school accomodates her and when they do....the results haven't always been positive. At times, it really breaks my heart to see my dd being excluded from activities and events. But at the same time, I realize that she needs to learn how to say no to...
  14. Okay, this site ultimately takes the cake. It is almost too cute to eat! It's all in Japanese...but at the top of the page is a list of months that you can click on to see what was prepared. It's incredibly inspiring! Open Original Shared Link
  15. Hmmm....I wonder if that would work. Dd has an egg allergy as well...but with food allergies, you never know if one type applies to another. She cannot tolerate cow dairy at all but can tolerate a bit of raw goat cheese on occasion (if it's not coated in egg white....ARGH!).
  16. My dd is also on a gluten/casein-free diet and we also avoid eggs, most soy (except soy lecithin and a small bit of soy protein isolate in Vegenaise and Earth Balance) and food colorings, artificial sweeteners...etc. Believe me, there are plenty of options out there...it's all a matter of perspective. We make our own "cheese" out of ground cashews...
  17. I went to Walmart today and saw some small tempered glass containers with plastic lids that would work for side dishes (4 containers for about $4.66). The only thing that concerns me is the weight. I have also seen some stainless steel and aluminum containers on several sites which are nice....except if you're in need of microwaving your lunch. I've...
  18. I haven't had any trouble with flavor transfer because I haven't officially gotten a Bento yet. However, I can tell you that the "bubble" bottle is actually an accessory sold specifically for use in the lunch kits. I was checking out some of the boxes on ebay and some are just absolutely beautiful. I don't know if anyone noticed, but the use of the...
  19. I have been searching into new ways of packing a lunch for myself (for work) as well as trying to find a cool way to pack my dd's lunch when she finally heads off for school. After a year of searching, I think that this is one of the coolest new ways to make gluten-free lunches appealing, healthy and most of all....FUN for kids. Be sure to check out the...
  20. Ridgewalker, I don't think that there's a single parent on these boards that doesn't understand the guilt that you speak of. We've all been there with our kids. I also basically had to self-diagnose my daughter and the diet worked beautifully within 24 hours. Up until then I thought that my child was extremely hyper, had no attention span and was...
  21. The genetic test may help in convincing the doctor that gluten is a problem (should your son have one of the two genes that the U.S. recognizes for Celiac.....keep in mind that in other countries, about 6 genes are known to be associated with celiac disease and about another 6 in gluten sensitivity). For some strange reason, many doctors in this country...
  22. Celiac or not....there are many people who are intolerant to dairy, especially casein. Besides gluten, I believe that casein and soy are the only other two foods which can cause blunting of the villi. I have read information that said to avoid dairy for about a year. But I'm not exactly sure how true or effective that really is. My dd has been off...
  23. Yes, it is possible to have celiac and still be in the 100th percentile for weight and height. The very first child that I met with celiac disease (prior to finding out about my dd's gluten problems) was in the 95th for both height and weight. He had biopsy and blood proven celiac disease. My dd had FTT and did not test positive for celiac disease on blood...
  24. I do take my dd to petting farms and zoos. The straw is often wheat straw and if we're not careful, she does react. This happened twice before we figured out what was going on. Since then, we've managed to go to the petting farm and zoos safely by taking a few preventative measures. We usually have dd wear a jacket or sweatshirt so that when we...
  25. The initial switch is overwhelming in the beginning. Probably because we have a tendency to focus on all the things we can't have as opposed to looking at all of the things we can have. I would first sit down and make a list of meals that your family likes that are naturally gluten-free or that can easily be converted. Some of the meals I came up with...
