ARCHIVED New Here, My Baby Might Be Allergic To Gluten? Will She Outgrow It?shayesmom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Linda, It sounds very probable that both your children have celiac...or in the least an extreme sensitivity to gluten. And if so, they will not "outgrow" it. The symptoms may change and get better or worse along the way, but it won't change the fact that they will always react and that it's causing damage. I truly don't mean to dash your hopes...

LOL! I got the insurance reason from a manager at McDonald's once when I brought in my dd's food. This was prior to me going gluten-free and I was just having hashbrowns and orange juice while I just had a minor snack for dd (she'd eaten at home). I quietly asked him if his insurance would cover my dd's allergic reaction to their food. We were there for...

ARCHIVED Immune System Down For Life?shayesmom replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease There are a lot of factors that play into immune function. It goes well beyond gluten. Other foods can play a role in suppressing the immune system. Dairy, soy, refined white sugar, hydrogenated oils are just a few that come to mind. Then there's the issue of "dead" foods compared to live ones (or overcooked/processed food compared to whole, raw foods...

ARCHIVED Genetic Testingshayesmom replied to debmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs DQ2 and DQ8 are the two genes that are recognized in the U.S. for celiac disease. Other countries recognize several other genes. This may explain why celiac disease takes an average of 11 years to diagnose in this country. Here's a quick reference list of other celiac disease and gluten-sensitive genes. Genes Associated with Celiac Disease vs....

ARCHIVED Gluten Has Now Affected My Marriageshayesmom replied to MrMark's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Okay, I feel like chiming in as well. We started the gluten-free diet for my dd (15 months old, negative celiac tests but HUGE positive response to diet). Cooking separate meals was soooo overwhelming. I just didn't have the energy to do it. So dh and I agreed that I would fix only gluten-free foods at home that we all ate and if he or I wanted...

	1) While talking to your one year old child's pediatrician about your concerns involving her 7-8 loose, foul-smelling bms she has each day. The doctor looks you right in the eye and says "That's perfectly normal". 2) When you further explain to the same pediatrician that your child seems to get this diarrhea along with hyperactive behavior after...

ARCHIVED Lunch Box Ideasshayesmom replied to my3kids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I would definitely suggest looking into bentos. It puts a whole new spin on packing a lunch and offers a variety that you just can't get sick of. I began making them for myself when I was at work. Now everyone wants to see my lunch from the moment I walk in the door. lol! Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared...

ARCHIVED Gluten Allergy? Celiac Diesease? Or Just Allergies?shayesmom replied to mayakeller's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs [My best guess would be that you are dealing with a problem that involves multiple food sensitivities. In the least, test for food allergies and then get the bloodwork for Celiac Disease done. The allergist may not be able to test for gluten allergies....but they can test for wheat, rye, oats, etc.. Once the results are in, follow up with an elimination...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diary Freeshayesmom replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yes, chia seeds as in chia pets. Not only are they high in calcium, but they are an incredible form of fiber. I buy the food grade seeds and use them in "granola" bars. You can also soak them in water and take them that way....but there is no real flavor. Plus, they turn into a gelatinous mess once soaked....so they can be slimy going down. They...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diary Freeshayesmom replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Avoiding both casein and whey can be tough. But it's not impossible, nor will bones begin disintegrating the minute dairy is removed from the diet. If you think about it, the only mammal which continues to drink milk beyond weaning is the human. All other mammals manage to grow and thrive just fine without it. And you don't hear of elephants suffering...

ARCHIVED Possible Milk/soy Allergyshayesmom replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy either. But all in all, at least it can be controlled at home and there aren't any risky procedures involved in maintaining it. We are gluten, dairy, soy and egg-free here. I also limit corn, peanuts and sesame. Yes, it can be a major pain in the rear end. But it's really paid off in the long run. I...

ARCHIVED Possible Milk/soy Allergyshayesmom replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If there is one thing I've learned with food allergies/intolerance, it's that you can't count on consistency. Reactions vary from person to person as well as age and stage of development. Being tired or under stress can also affect the severity of the reaction. My dd used to get a rash from dairy. A year later, no more rashes but rather hyperactivity...

ARCHIVED Celiacs And Multiple Allergies-food Suggestions Pleaseshayesmom replied to learningmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs For snacks, you could try dips like guacamole or hummus. Or even artichoke/spinach dip with gluten-free bread and veggies. Meatballs, cabbage rolls, hamburgers, meatloaf, pot roast....and how about fish? Is he allergic to fish/shellfish? Applegate Farms makes hot dogs that are either beef, chicken or turkey and are organic. Pastas with alfredo...

ARCHIVED Probiotics For Dummiesshayesmom replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease Probiotics are the friendly bacteria found in your gut. They help with digestion and absorption of food and it is believed that they also play a major part in immunity. Everyone has them in their intestines. Without them, we die. Illness occurs when their is an imbalance in the ratio of probiotics to bad bacteria in our intestines. To be...

ARCHIVED Cronic Ear Infectionsshayesmom replied to raegansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I don't know where you're at in this process currently. But hopefully, you've found some non-surgical answers for your dd. If not, there are some other ways to combat the ear infections that do not involve antibiotics or surgery. If you haven't already done so, eliminate dairy and/or soy. I know that will seem a bit scary with a 15 month old, but it...

ARCHIVED Help My 3 Year Old, My Have This?shayesmom replied to rebeckalyn79's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yes, the change can be THAT fast. I did a dietary trial with my daughter when she was 15 months old. I couldn't believe the difference in her behavior, eating and sleeping habits. Prior to going gluten-free, my dd was fairly happy....until the evening when it seemed that the slightest thing would pitch her into a major meltdown. We chalked it up...

So many suggestions for future docs....so little time! First off, I have to agree wholeheartedly that one of the best skills a doctor can cultivate is listening. Not all patients are mentally unstable, lying or are hypochondriacs. And chances are, a patient will know if how they are feeling now is different from what their "norm" is or was. Don...

Pizza crust usually isn't too bad. The sauce, cheese and toppings do a lot to cover up the flavor of it! lol!! I have managed to come up with a thin and crispy crust (after 3 years of messing around). So if this one doesn't work out, PM me and I will send you mine. I'd imagine that your dd's will taste more normal as we are also dairy-free and I...

You can buy Walden Farms pancake syrup on-line. It is advertised as being gluten-free and is relatively inexpensive. You may be able to get your local grocer to carry it. I am sorry that your daughter is going through this grieving period. Unfortunately, this is normal for all of us. And it definitely stinks. It is important to understand that this...

I have to agree on that one as well. Agave is wonderful and we use it quite often as a sweetener. It's a bit tougher to use in baking as you will need to change the quantity used....it doesn't substitute cup for cup with refined white sugar. I would imagine that you could also experiment with making flavored syrups. Perhaps boiling in fruits like strawberries...

LOL! Believe me...I can relate to not wanting to give up the soft drinks. After 30 years of drinking 1 or 2 per day, I finally was able to give them up about a year ago. Thankfully, the reformulation of the soft drinks were of help. For some odd reason, I now get a horrendous psoriatic rash each and every time I drink any of them. I've called several...

There are plenty of sick people out there. They just don't realize that their degenerating health is linked to the over-processed, nutrient-poor foods that they are willfully consuming. Colas specifically have been linked to kidney disease. The study in question is recently found on PubMed: Open Original Shared Link There is also the question of sodium...

ARCHIVED Test Results Are Inshayesmom replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I have to agree with this one. My mother has had reflux/IBS for over a decade (going on 14 years now). She's been tested for celiac and allergies multiple times (both via blood and biopsy), has gone through all sorts of allergy treatments and has been prescribed each and every reflux med on the market. No great luck. She's been toying with the gluten...

ARCHIVED Is Self Diagnosis Enough?shayesmom replied to sandworm's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Was the turkey stuffed with breading and then basted? Was it a pre-basted turkey? Cross contamination can be just as bad as eating several sandwiches. Corn can also be pretty tough on an injured digestive system. I wouldn't rule that completely out either. And yes, your "reaction" could also be from something you ate 3 days ago. Food intolerances...
