  1. I have found that Living Without magazine is a great source for recipes of all kinds. You can check out some free sample recipes at their website Open Original Shared Link. I also have a ton of recipes saved that I could send you....just PM me. And let me know what types of recipes you are looking for (snacks, breakfast items, lunch, desserts, main entrees...
  2. Interesting points on both sides. However, I think that with the biopsy, there can be "complications" or "detrimental" side effects....such as getting that "negative" result and then continuing on gluten for years and years and years, then being scoped MULTIPLE times with more "negative" results. Only to finally try the diet and find out that your child...
  3. My dd started pre-k this year and it was one heck of an adventure trying to see our way through all of the accidental glutenings. I can tell you this much, it is very difficult to have the teachers and everyone else understand the severity of the reaction to gluten. But is even more difficult to get past the issue of cross contamination. It's doable...
  4. I think that that the choice is yours....but with a positive blood test, I personally don't see the point. If the biopsy came back "negative", the simple fact remains that it won't negate the results of the blood work. And the whole line of conversation as to your dd's skin not "looking like a Celiac"...WTH??? Who in their right mind would want their kids...
  5. Actually, hot dogs and possibly other processed meats raise your chance of developing pancreatic cancer by 67%. Open Original Shared Link So it's not much of a trade-off. Both diseases tend to be fatal in a relatively short amount of time.
  6. By the sounds of it, you cannot put her back on gluten and expect her to not get sick. What are the pros to putting her back on gluten? And if by chance you were able to get a positive Dx (which is doubtful)....what do you think you would gain from it? I think that you need to take some time to see how your dd does and some time to figure out what...
  7. I don't know if you've ever bought Living Without magazine, but they have WONDERFUL recipes which I think that you could use to create meals and snacks for your son. And they also give you ideas for substitutions on other allergens. So if you're baking sweet treats, they may tell you to use applesauce instead of eggs. Or to substitute arrowroot instead...
  8. That's absolutely wonderful news!!! Sounds like you've found one of the main components in all of the medical mess you've had to go through. I'm sure that things will continue to get better for her. And as for weight gain....YIPPEE! My dd gained a full pound the first month we went gluten-free. The second month she was gaining 10 oz. per two weeks...
  9. If it's of any consolation, my dd tested negative on the blood tests and I opted out of the biopsy and just tried the diet. My dd responded positively in the first 24 hours. Three days later, she was a completely different child! It was such an incredible transformation to watch and has kept me motivated for the past 2 years (in which time, I also went...
  10. Rusla, your suggestion would be awesome except for two points. The first being that they obviously are either suffering from illiteracy (as they can't read all the posted signs to begin with....so will they be able to read the child's name on a box of cereal?). And the second being your first accurate observation of some people being "so very dumb". ...
  11. Tropical Source has also been making dd and I sick. I'm figuring it's from the roasted soy flour....we just can't seem to "handle" eating any soy beyond lecithin. Dagoba has been okay (when we can find one that is dairy-free). We've mostly satisfied our chocolate craving by eating the Enjoy Life Chocolate chips which are free of the top 8 allergens. ...
  12. Actually, the center of the left and right foot can also mean problems with the colon as well or even kidneys. Foot reflexology is pretty specific and definitely works. It's also interesting to know that massage therapists are not permitted to give foot massages to pregnant women because they could potentially trigger miscarriage. There are some...
  13. Okay. So it was only Jaime's dh that thought I was a nutcase. The best part of all of this is that at least you have some kind of evidence as to what the real problem is...not only with Ryan but with all of you. So $400 isn't too bad of an investment. As for dairy....let him get the gluten-free diet down. Once all those pieces fall into...
  14. Going completely gluten-free is a major accomplishment, no matter how long you've been doing it. It's especially difficult those first few weeks due to withdrawal issues and food cravings. For brownies and chocolate cake....get The Gluten-free Pantry's mixes. I highly recommend the Danielle's Decadent Chocolate Cake mix. Add applesauce in lieu of...
  15. As a matter of fact....I had excruciating foot pain after Shaye was born. It got to the point where I thought I had multiple stress fractures in both feet. The pain in my arches was terrible and lasted for over a year. I went up and down stairs like an old woman...especially in the early morning. I thought at first that it could be from the extra baby...
  16. AMEN to that!!! My dd completely changed overnight (seriously...24 hours later the changes were nothing short of miraculous). The diarrhea was gone in 3 days. Now the distended abdomen took a couple of months to go down....but overall, there was absolutely no question that dd had a severe gluten intolerance going on. I have a real hard time...
  17. Well, if it's any consolation, at least you are aware of the issue in the family and you'll be saving yourself a lot of tests, research, GI appointments as well as money over the next few years. I know that it's still a very sad thing to contemplate....but in a way, at least now you won't feel torn between two kids being on different diets and the...
  18. My dd also has several food intolerances besides gluten....namely any form of dairy, soy, eggs and food colorings...yellow dye #5 to be precise. I've also found that we do better if I limit the refined sugar and citrus as both will exacerbate her allergies. Corn is suprisingly okay, but at this point, we try to keep rotating foods so that new allergies...
  19. Personally, I agree with a pp that she is probably associating feeling ill with eating due to Celiac. My dd was the same way up until we took gluten out of her diet. I swear she ate just enough not to starve! When we went gluten-free, her appetite seemed to triple and now she eats very healthily. We do have days where her appetite is less than others...
  20. We are dealing with issues of cross contamination at school as well. It has taken us a month to finally get it under control. The issues seem to by multiple. The first being that the soap in the school has both gluten and soy in it. I supplied soap for my dd but ended up buying soap for the others in her class as well to prevent CC. The second issue...
  21. Yes. I know. And that is exactly what disturbs me the most about this post. I've run into doctors who will tell a patient what they want to hear despite positive dietary response. And there's also the factor that most doctors will volunteer that "the gluten free diet sucks" and will actually work quite hard to keep patients from doing the diet due to...
  22. In many other countries, there are other genes that are being identified with Celiac and gluten sensitivity which aren't all yet recognized in the U.S.. For example, here's the list in New Zealand (source:Open Original Shared Link): Gene: Associated with: HLA-B8 Celiac disease HLA-DQ1 Gluten sensitivity HLA-DQ2 Celiac disease HLA-DQ...
  23. Some decent candies can be found here: Open Original Shared Link Also, you may find some luck with Gimball's candies and even the Chocolate Emporium. I will try to find some links for the last two!
  24. We've recently discovered that Tings are both gluten and dairy-free and taste a lot like Cheetos (and are similarly priced). The manufacturer only makes naturally gluten-free products so it would not have CC issues. You may want to give them a try. We bought our first bag yesterday and everyone in the house likes it. The bag was only $2.79! The ingredients...
  25. Yep! Cold gluten-free turkey over here too! We did not experience any gluten-free withdrawal symptoms here....unless you call a craving for crunchy foods a withdrawal symptoms. Fortunately, we were able to find some gluten-free crackers and crunchy cereals to combat this. DD improved so much the very first day on diet that we were far to ecstatic...
