  1. I think it can help. There are supplements which combine betaine HCL along with pepsin, which is supposed to be a good combination for the stomach. Just make certain of the ingredients in the supplement you select.
  2. Well, if your father has Celiac, that alone is a red flag. So regardless of what tests say, I'd suggest trying a gluten-free diet. And as you may have already read on this forum, small children are most difficult to diagnose accurately, so I think the best test for her may be a gluten-free diet. However, do keep in mind that other foods may be a problem...
  3. Yeah, did check the local Walmart, but apparently they don't all carry the same stuff. Well, grains aren't the only carb source. Not by a long shot. The potatoes you mention are quite carby. Sweet potatoes are as well, though they digest more slowly, so don't spike blood sugar like white potatoes tend to do. So this and other complex carbs may be...
  4. I second the Source Naturals methylcobalamin sublingual B12 tablet. It has worked very well for me. It is cherry flavored. Most other brands of sublingual tablets seem to be acidic to the point of irritating the insides of my mouth. Some people seem to be confused by the term "sublingual", thinking it means the product must be a liquid, but it simply means...
  5. Kasha is the name given to roasted buckwheat. It's not a brand name. Anyway, I haven't found a single brand of buckwheat groats that isn't contaminated. Every brand I've investigated is at least grown and transported along with wheat. Regardless of the facility it is processed in, it will very likely be contaminated even before it gets there This goes...
  6. Even when it's trouble with dairy, it's not always lactose. In fact, from the many posts and threads on the subject, I'd say it's just as if not more commonly due to the casein (the primary milk protein). But given the foods you ate, it isn't particularly apparent which item(s) is/are the culprit(s). If it is dairy that bothers you, please don't kid yourself...

I too found methylcobalamin to be incredibly helpful. The recommendation of 5mg per day is what I'd suggest as well. There is no known level of overdose for B12. Besides the brands mentioned, Source Naturals also makes a decent one. Another nutrient which has helped me immeasurably is magnesium, so I'd highly recommend that too. Start with 200mg per day...
  8. There is a lot of good advice in this thread already. What I'd add is that once I looked beyond rice flours, I never looked back! I immediately noticed the difference - no grittiness with sorghum, millet, tapioca, etc. Only the rice flours were gritty. The superfine rice flours that I could find were expensive by comparison. But I did find rice flours at...
  9. I think what others have stated gives a fairly clear picture of what we'd want. Not just stuff we can't conveniently/quickly/easily make at home, and not just "fast food", but plenty of ordinary menu items so that it doesn't feel like a "special" restaurant. So just like anybody, we can sit down and order what we want, not what we must. So the atmosphere...
  10. The recommendation of magnesium is worth pursuing, as is other nutrient deficiencies. Epsom salt baths are supposed to be helpful too, which is not surprising since Epsom salt is a form of magnesium. For years I could not sleep well at all. Nothing seemed to help. That was before going gluten-free, but even afterward, sleep wasn't something which I could...
  11. Some things that I know from experience which can help include magnesium, zinc, vitamin B12, garlic, ginger, curcumin (from turmeric), and omega-3s such as flax oil (or fish oil). Taking Epsom salt baths can help too, along with washing dishes by hand, and adding Epsom salt to the dish water. Here's a list of things you can include in your diet that should...
  12. Well, I've found that certain foods tend to make it worse, while others tend to help or don't effect it either way. Start with the top 8 allergens, but nearly anything can bother the digestive system, depending on your particulars. Splitting meals into smaller portions throughout the day may help too. A decent digestive enzyme supplement has helped, but it...
  13. Well, the cornstarch and baking powder might be produced in a dedicated facility, and batch tested. Just not Bob's facilities, though I'd guess they repackage it in a dedicated gluten-free facility, and therefor subsequently test it.
  14. Sorry, my bad. It's not called a secret formula, it's called a Trade Secret, and it IS permitted. Perhaps the top 8 allergens have to be declared, but the FDA does allow companies to withhold ingredients from product labels in certain cases. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link
  15. Many people find Epsom salt baths very helpful too. Since that's a form of magnesium, I don't doubt its effective to some degree.
  16. Just so you know, Bob's Red Mill doesn't make the cornstarch they sell, nor the baking powder in which it is also included. I've never asked them about their xanthan gum, but I suspect they don't make that either. What I'd like to see is the actual batch test results, printed on each package. This is not a big deal to implement at all, and it wouldn...
  17. Well, if you're talking about a granola-type bar, then flaked coconut is a great choice. I've read good reviews regarding the use of quinoa flakes in place of oats, but have yet to try them. Also haven't found or tried rice flakes, but it sounds like a good idea as well.
  18. It does blend into things pretty well, and I use it for a number of different things. As for the taste, I don't think it's particularly strong, but in high concentrations I'm sure it'd be noticed, just as any protein powder would. I think it'd be a matter of how different the taste of it is from what you are expecting. For what it's worth, I've tried rice...
  19. I agree with what AVR1962 said. Try a magnesium supplement. I don't know if what you're experiencing has any connection to the vitamin C you've been taking, but depending on the ingredients, it may. Some minerals "compete" for absorption. Or, you may simply be deficient in magnesium due to low intake, or malabsorption from some other issue. If the increased...
  20. It is also unsafe to use a toaster that has been used for wheat bread. Cutting boards and other wooden utensils also cannot be safely cleaned. Same for cast iron pans, scratched non-stick cooking surfaces, and anything with crevices or porous surfaces. As was stated, browse the board and read as much as you can. And welcome!
  21. Wow, I finally have a name to put on it! Have had this as long as I can remember. Still do, and not until this moment did I connect it to Celiac. Sorta just ignore it most of the time. And the easy bruising...oh yeah. Blisters too. But these didn't start until long after going gluten-free Been taking vitamin C, K2, D3, Biotin, Folic acid, and more...
  22. The most economical protein powder I've found is the pea protein from NOW Foods. It's just plain protein, nothing else added. So you can flavor it however you like, and have total control over ingredients. Also makes for more variety, as you can use whatever flavors or fruits, etc.
  23. Another gluten-free product you might like to try is Open Original Shared Link, by Coconut Secret. Especially for those who avoid soy.
  24. From what I've read, all vaccines are made using chicken eggs, and those sensitive to eggs can have all sorts of bad reactions to them. Not to mention that vaccines also often include mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, and a number of other questionable things. But if your allergies involve the immune system (and I'm not sure if they ever wouldn't), it might...
  25. I have found that a digestive enzyme supplement has helped reduce the balloon belly, but it hasn't eliminated it. Sticking to foods which are more easily digested helps too. Funny thing is, for me the bloating only appeared after being gluten-free for quite awhile.
