  1. As I understand it, the glue used to hold the paper to the cardboard tube is the only gluten issue.
  2. Well, true to a point I guess, though there aren't too many forms of life which can live in the stomach anyway, on account of the hydrochloric acid. Intestinal "flora", sure. But I'm not purposely ingesting them, as would be the case with xanthan gum. If it was truly all the same, we could eat poop, or dirt, etc. But we don't. I guess it's the more direct...
  3. Well, I've read that xanthan gum can be a problem because some companies grow the microbes on wheat. Apparently corn is also commonly used to grow the microbes, so those who cannot tolerate corn might have problems from it too. I decided to use guar gum right from the start, so I don't know if I'd have a reaction to xanthan. I just don't like the idea...
  4. I read something about cassava (the root from which tapioca is derived) producing some sort of toxic substance when cut, and that it has to be prepared properly to destroy that substance. Apparently though some people do get an upset stomach from tapioca anyway, so I suppose it might be related to the toxin (which I recall was a cyanide acid of sorts). ...
  5. Well, I haven't ever needed anything like a conditioner, but I've read a lot of people find coconut oil (same as coconut butter) does a marvelous job. Apparently it only takes a tiny amount too, so you'd probably save money. You can get a sample before buying a whole jar, to test how well it works first. The sample would probably last quite awhile too. CoconutOil...
  6. I recall hearing about bottled water being chlorinated or something, as that would help cut down on bacteria and whatnot. I've no idea if that would apply to all brands, and include spring water. One would hope it'd be on the label, but these days I wouldn't take it for granted. If it's actually bottled tap water, then I'd say the chances of something having...
  7. Interesting. I was just reading that mayonnaise can contain gluten, apparently because of the vinegar. So maybe pickles do too. I haven't ever looked since I generally avoid vinegar because it promotes yeast growth.
  8. Plenty of good comments thus far. I'd only add that most people on this board seem to be saying that their tests for celiac disease were largely/entirely negative. It is not diagnosed very well at all, though more often now than it was. I've also noticed new symptoms since going gluten-free. Many others do to. That seems to be very common. Apparently these...
  9. Well, according to what I've just read about the disease, the actual cause is unknown. IMHO celiac disease could be the underlying cause. You would not be the first to find major improvement in other problems once you get celiac disease under control. I hope that is the case for you, as the outlook you describe is rather grim I don't know how you feel...
