I watched a few of the newlywed shows and remember one where she was just coming off a diet (low carb) so she would lose weight to film the dukes movie. She was with Nick eating at a restaurant and having a big plate of pasta and she was so excited to be eating carbs. She got full really fast and all night she complained she had gas. She was rolling around and couldn't sit still. She was drinking maloxx I think to get the gas to escape. Then they ending the show with her farting loud and long and Nick couldn't believe something like that would come out such a pretty little girl. lol It was funny but you could tell she was in pain. I understand it but I don't think alot of people do.

My brother and his son were wondering why they haven't been feeling well for the past 3 weeks. Thought it was the stomach flu that they just couldn't shake off. They heard this on the news and sure enough they had the peanut butter. The value one.
Boy that would get me so angry because they kept eating it. I wish it wouldn't take so long to find these things out.
Do you think that is causing all this stomach flu problems sweeping the nation. I told my brother to hang on to the jar incase there are problems that set in that will pop up down the road. Like damage done to the intestines (we all can relate to that)

I've dealt with inflammation through out my adult life that has lead me to going gluten free. That has been the biggest impact on eliminated pain and alot of symptoms I that blew my mind that it could ever be connected. Other things I've tried that helped we're:
Going on the Zone diet. That was the first thing I did back in the 90's. It helped and now I realized I was eliminating alot of carbs and eating more vegetables mainly salads with a good olive oil and vinegar.
Taking fish oil. The omega 3's. Walnuts and flaxseed oil or ground up are also high. This also just helps the mind and mood. Helps with people who suffer from depression. I changed all the oils I was eating cutting down on butter and eliminating margarine and most of the vegetable oils.
I stopped drinking sodas and sugar which is a big no no for joint pain suffers. I drink lots of water since dehydration will make you ache and feel tired. I started drinking a glass of wine because its full of anti oxidants and makes the blood platlets less sticky or thins the blood.
Some people have to eliminate all grains to feel better. There are good books on it, the one that comes to mind is The Inflammation Syndrome by Jack Challem. Another good one is Dangerous Grains by James Braly. Barry Sears has alot of books on inflammation and is the one who created the Zone diet for optimum health.
I have found all of these suggestions have helped me. There is also a time in my life I had to admit I can't do the things I used to do in my 20's and 30's. Anything that stresses the joints to much is something I had to deal with. Walking and swimming instead of high impact sports. Taking MSM helps restore to some point.
well thats all I could thing of for now.

I think this is going to be the hardest meal of the day for me as I can't possibly eat eggs every day and I can't eat dairy (except butter)
My requirements for breakfast:
-gluten and casein/lactose free
-must contain protein to keep my blood sugar balanced (hypoglycemia)
The combination of these 2 things makes it hard for me to figure out what to eat! Rice milk with a gluten-free corn flake cereal with fruit won't cut it because I need protein and/or fat in each of my meals!
Any suggestions? What do you eat?
I am the same way...I can't just eat carbs for breakfast although I would like nothing better then to pour a bowl of cereal douse it with milk and watch the news in front of t.v.
I usually chop leftover meat from dinner like 1 or 2 oz. of chicken breast for example and scramble up an egg and make an omlette.
Or I always have a pkg. of applegate farm brand bacon in the fridge (made without nitrates) and snip it with a scissors into a small frying pan, cook for a few min. and pour a scrambled egg into it. I never get to sick of eating eggs because I vary it so often.
So that's my protein. I'll either have gluten free toast, or 1/2 c. of gluten free cereal with 1/2 c. soy milk (also good in portein) for my carb. If I feel I need another carb I'll ate fruit. Lately I haven't because I do better without the added carb.
This is pretty much what I do every morning because it seems to be the perfect balance.

This is a great article going into alot of the silent celiac symptoms that doctors aren't aware of, many of them being caused by inflammation. It caught my eye as I was googling Afib because I'll suffer from this from time to time. Affibbers benefit from a Paleo diet, excluding all grains. This is long but very interesting and I think it answers alot of problems that are disscussed here from time to time. You'll have to copy and paste since I forgot how to send links.

They're kinda cute and I was wondering if anyone ordered one yet. Do the sizes run small? After watching Elisabeth come out today on the view I'm encouraged to be more vocal about it also and thought what a good way to start the conversation.

I am indeed two different people:
On gluten I hurt all over, I am depressed, lethargic and anxious. I have trouble concentrating and my stomach hurts. I'm irritable and miserable.
Off of gluten...I don't hurt anymore. I feel more energetic and dare I say it...happy AND my IQ shoots up 20 points.
This will sound absurd to anyone who hasn't actually experienced it for themselves, but it is true..
Mr Gluten and Mr Notglutened
My story is similar to yours. My first cavity was very early I'm guessing 5, which just progressed to fillings in every tooth. Feeling groggy can't understand teachers. Always had a stomach ache. I was always considered bossy growing up I thought it was because I was the oldest of 6 kids but really thinking about it I was just irritable all the time. I was always the thinnest smallest person in class. I never had the classic diarrhea which always threw me. I'm so glad I found that not everyone does get that. I feel so much better........I wish I found out earlier. I'm so glad you found out! You don't need to go another day feeling like that again. The only thing you'll have to now overcome is cross contaminations which we all figure out eventually. You'll be posting asking questions about it.
Usually following a "I can't figure out why..."

I found these yesterday at the grocery store:

They're quite tasty, have a good floppy-tortilla texture, much happier for the hypoglycemics/diabetics, and would go fabulously for wrapping up well spiced stuff. (Macro Nut. Info: 13g fat (2.5 omega-3), 10g carb (8 fiber), 10g protein).
Expensive, but good for those on-the go, but filling, lunches.
I like them. I've posted about them a couple of times. Very low net carbs. They make another one without gluten also.

I'm sure it's not coincidental that she was promoting the new AB beer but if that is what it took for her to 'come out' so to speak I'm thrilled that AB approached her. Maybe she had them donate money to Celiac research or something. AB is a huge ABC sponsor and having anyone on The View drink Redbridge on air is priceless advertising. Either way it works and at least she mentioned infertility in addition to IBS. Hopefully they will do a proper health segment on Celiac next week. We should all send Elisabeth TY e-mails today and ask they do so.
Why would you need to advertise gluten free beer. It'll spread like wild fire among celiacs the minute its mentioned that their even thinking about brewing it. I think Elisabeth mentioned to Rosie during make-up she can finally drink beer since Rosie is a big beer fan. Rosie probably pushed her to say something about the disease since Elisabeth wouldn't come out with it. I could never understand why she wouldn't either. Anyway I'm glad she did and it was very light and funny.

I was one of those lucky celiacs that gained a lot of weight prior to diagnosis. I lost it all pretty quickly, but recently gained about 5 lbs due to a lot (a LOT) of overeating over the holidays. I've gotten back to my regular exercise and healthy eating (I count calories), but I just can't kick the hunger pains. I'm getting a normal, safe amount of calories (approx. 1800 a day), but I'm hungry almost immediately after every meal. I don't believe my body could have gotten used to eating so much since it was about 2 weeks total.
Seeing that I need to lose 5 lbs, I certainly don't want to gain anymore or prevent myself from losing, but I'm wondering if I need to add more calories because I might not be absorbing nutrients correctly, which could lead to hunger? Or am I just having a hard time getting back into the swing of normal caloric intake?
In case anyone was wondering, here's what yesterday, a typical day, looks like for me:
coffee with coffeemate
1 cup cottage cheese, 6 oz. fat-free yogurt, blueberries
lentil and vegetable soup
cannelini bean, turkey sausage and kale stew
large salad with veggies and cubed turkey, 2 T. dressing and a few cheese cubes
grapefruit, english muffin with peanut butter
I'm having protein with every meal, lots of veggies and fruit, and complex carbs.
I don't know what it is about beans but I get really hungry after them. Especially if your just having a serving of them which I suspect you are. I would of got real hungry after having that lentil and veggie soup. I would up my protein even more if I were you to avoid hunger pains. I know advice for people who have a hard time with their stomachs taking a long time to empty is to avoid fats so I kind of agree with what people are saying. Fat slows the digestive process.

even that article discussing the chemistry notes that the free form naturally occurs in foods. ("free" here meaning the anionic form - so once it's in solution, anything with enough liquid to dissassociate the ionic bond - including saliva, it's 'free'. and it's this free form that the taste buds can pick up on.) so I don't see how it could help but be produced, at low levels, in the body.
it leaves me feeling that there are a number of people with very low tolerance levels, or with some variety of immune reaction (based on what you and others have described), to either version, and the levels that occur naturally are below this, but any addition is a problem... ?
(as for wiki being 'neutral'... ha! it's definitely not!
at least the chemistry on that page was quite helpful, though. thanks for the link.)
Yes I believe this is true. That's why I can't do the paleo diet. Having all that protein jacks me up just like I was having caffeine. It will disrupt my sleep and its hard to feel relaxed. I used to feel like I was manic/depressive but stuck in the manic stage all the time. But then I realized when I would come down from mania it would be that I didn't have alot of protein and had a day of eating carbs.
The longer you cook a protein, like if I have a roast that's been in the oven for 3 hrs. the reaction becomes worse. And the worse is having MSG itself and then what happens to me is my heart starts to beat rapidly and I sometimes pass out.

I started to include soy in my diet in January but I'm kicking it out again because I too noticed a reaction when ever I had more then 1/2 cup of soy milk. I wanted the soy mainly as a protein so I wouldn't have to eat eggs all the time. I'm one of those who cannot tolerate MSG in any amount whatsoever.
So carrageenen is also in almond milk so I guess if I made that myself I could have it but it seems like just another thing I have to do. I won't have rice milk because its too high in carbo's and I'm on a candida diet.
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to dilute cream to have if you want something to have over a cereal? I don't have dairy but can tolerate it in small amts. Its not a big issue, for instance I can have yogurt every once in awhile and I'm find with it.
I'm thinking of diluting cream by the same amt of water.

I was researching some things last night on digestive health and came across this article.

The Long Hollow Tube: A Primer on the Digestive System
Here is a paragraph from the article that has me alittle confused. I thought you might want to read it.
It is always difficult to draw conclusions from epidemiological data, but there is one study that should serve as a warning to the fiber brigade. Researchers fed four groups of rats on diets high in alfalfa, wheat bran, cellulose and pectin for six weeks and then examined the jejunum and the mid-colon using electron microscopy. All groups suffered from mucosal surface changes that could interfere with nutritional absorption. Bran provoked the least severe changes, followed by cellulose followed by pectin, followed by alfalfa. Those consuming pectin and alfalfa suffered from severe degeneration of the intestinal villi (Am J Clin Nutr 1981 Feb;34(2):218-28).
I would of thought that this goes against what I believed but I just read that morning from a book I have called Optimal Digestive Health by Trent W. Nichols, MD. Its a good book BTW. In it has a chapter called Repairing the GI Tract.
It stated the following.... Permavite (name brand) fiber contains an insoluble fiber, cellulose, which seems to decrease and clear toxins. In powder form it mixes well with water and has a mild flavor. The general recmmendation is to use this prior to two meals a day. It is specifcally formulated for intestinal permeability, based on observations made by Dr. Leo Galland that different kinds of fiber affect permeability and that soluble fibers tend to increase it. So this formula is based on insoluble cellulose and has other components in it to sooth and heal the GI tract. Cellulose products available in drugstores in Citracel and Fiber-con. Permavite contains speific added nutrients and is available from allergy Research Group.
So I may have to try this for awhile to see if that helps with my getting the GI tract healed. Oh and another tip I read was to use MSM, a form of the mineral sulfur, enhances the body chemistry probably by raising glutathione levels in all the cells. This helps to prevent oxidative stress throughout the GI tract. It is supposed to prevent pathogens-bacteria, yeast, and parasites- from adhering to the bowel wall, so that the body can flush them out much more easily.
So I thought I pass this along, you never know what works.
Good luck,
Gail

I'll feel sore along the lower colon after a bm. It might be diverticulitis, I always wondered about it too. It mostly hurts when the bm's are hard to push and I don't feel like I finished the job. So its not with every bm. Lately I've been having more nuts like walnuts on my salad and noticed I had this last night and then this morning I noticed your post so its comforting to know others have this too.

I know in Madison they have a bakery that makes great gluten free bread. The address is 7866 Mineral Point Road Madison WE 53717. Their web site is www.sillyyakbakery.com/glutenfree.html
They have wonderful health-food stores that are nice and big with a large selection. Alot of ethnic food restaurants. But I would ask around at the bakery and healthfood stores and they can tell you.

I've been following a low fat vegan diet for six years and a gluten-free one for almost 2 weeks. So I'm in the same boat. I haven't gone searching for any fake meats. I've cut back since I read the following about isolated soy protein, which many of these products have:

If you prefer, here is a video of Dr. McDougall speaking on the same subject:

You have to listen to his discussion of IGF-1 and how dairy influences it before he addresses isolated soy protein.
Here is his list of burger mixes and meat substitutes that don't contain this ingredient:

I don't know which of these do not contain gluten at this point ...
Thanks for the links, I've read one and thought it was very good and I agree totally. I decided to include soy milk and tofu in my diet this year and not eat red meat from cows anymore. I eat buffalo if I want to come close in making a few of my favorite recipes. I never digested the fake of isolated soy proteins anyway so I guess that won't be a problems for me. I had my share of luna bars though
Thanks and welcome to gluten free living,

Thanks Rachel for all the work it took to share this information. I always learn so much from you and appreciated it so much. I've suffered since 1982 from candida. Its so hard to get it under control. I have to work on it again, I know I've been saying that for the past 8 mo. but I hate being on the diet so much I get in a state of denial.
It doesn't surprize me in the least candida gives the same symptoms as gluten. I'm like you....how do you find yourself free from this and get the gut looking healthy again. That would clear up all food intolerances and the many symptoms that involves. I still think there's other reason why some are prone to this. Mine was stress all through my childhood. Matters of abuse that I won't get into. I still think there's more to it though.
I'll have to start visiting OMG some more. I try to every now and then because its so helpful. I think you should go on to school Rachel your way to smarter then you realize.

I try to get enough fiber just by eating the right foods. I can't bare to drink fiber drinks. So I usually have to have two fruits aday. I try to have salads for lunch. My serving of veg. for supper is usually two servings full plus a whole grain brown rice or millet bread/bun or potato.
I usually try to eat as close to natural state as possible. But then I spurge on weekends and make dessert so I don't feel deprived.
I take a multi vit. and a Calcium/mag. supplement. Sometimes additional zinc because I think I'm deficient in that one. Also Glutathione which is a great at delivery toxic junk out (giving your liver a break).
I only have wine one or two days a week. And chocolate about the same. I try and not to have sugar as much as possible.
Anyway this is what took about 30 years of living and learning since living on my own. So it took awhile to get here.
The best thing I did was to give up gluten.
Never regretted it and I'll never go back.

At the health food store I go to they would throw in samples in the bag when I checked out. One sample was a packet of emergen C super energy booster which contained 1,000 mg of vit. c and 7 mineral ascorbates. I almost mixed it up when I thought I'd read the ingred. and sure enough it said it contained wheat. Whew I was so close. You might call or check that out with the company if they're putting it in one product they might be doing it in others.

I don't call people, but last time I was at Beau Jo's in Colorado I made my friend take a picture of me, so I would have evidence that I ate real pizza from a real pizza place
Sometimes when I eat gluten free stuff that looks and tastes like the real stuff I feel like I'm cheating and have to fight feeling guilty. Also I'll have dreams that I'm eating bread or cookies and wake up horrified. lol
I could go for a chile dog. I'd probably have three and be thirsty all night.

It was funny watching Martha eating like it was the best chocolate cupcake she ever had. It did look good. Do you think it has to be sweetened with the nector stuff or can I just use sugar. She uses sugar in the bread.

I believe this is so true. We know gluten causes inflammation and in more people then we think. When the neurotransmitters are firing up constantly it eventually leads to cell death. We are losing brain cells. MSG will do the same thing in people who have leaking brain barriers.
I didn't realize the brain atrophies. So the term pea brain is a valid term.
