ARCHIVED Why Dogs Bite People On Hallowe'en
Heater replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think I got that same e-mail too.. with the dogs all dressed up. I don't know how to post it though. Can you even put photos on here? -
Thanks for the suggestions!

Nope, I think the gray and white one is the Blue House Cafe. I've never eaten there. The Quarry is probably about half a block down towards the other end of Main Street (#718 Main St). Unfortunately I missed your interview on TV. Do you know if there's a link to it online? I looked but didn't see one.

Does anyone know any good restaurants in Saskatoon? I'm going there for about a week. Thanks!

I live in Canmore, and always go to Nutters. It's really good. They're doing renovations now to open up in a bigger store (which hopefully means more stuff), so their supply might be somewhat limited for the next while, but they still have quite a bit. If you're in town, and want to go somewhere good for dinner, go to the Quarry downtown. I've eaten there...

That's funny... I'm going to try that some day

ARCHIVED Detoxification
Heater posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I met some lady with celiac disease the other day and she was surprised when I told her I didn't do anything special for detoxification when I found out I had celiac disease (I just stopped eating gluten). I'm not sure what else she did, but she mentioned that she just recently went for blood tests at an aruvetic (not sure what the actual word is) practitioner... -
ARCHIVED Bleh! New Grist Is Gross!
Heater replied to chewymom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You could try La Messagere. I like it alright, and I didn't even like beer before. Some of my beer drinking friends have tried it and said it's not terrible. Sorry you didn't like it. -
ARCHIVED We All Need A Laugh...to Cope
Heater replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first time I ate out I went to a vegetarian restaurant, and did everything the books told me to. I called ahead, had my celiac association card, talked to the server and chef about it... and the main course was good. Then the server came around and was talking about dessert and said he had a perfect gluten free dessert for me. It was some berry crumble... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Restaurant In Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Heater replied to mac3's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just got some La Messagere at Alberta Spirits! Seems like they're expanding where they sell it. I wasn't a beer drinker before, but this stuff isn't too bad. -
Kathy Ann, I really liked your speedboat analogy. Some of my "friends" fit perfectly into that category. They ask questions and pretend like they know what's going on, but then in the next sentence they'll tell me to try something I'm unsure about and see if it makes me sick. Or ask if I've started reintroducing wheat yet. So I know they don't really get...

What's a good way of saying what happens when you eat gluten? I have to eat out with people quite a bit for work, and I never know what to say past 'it makes me sick' if they keep asking. Generally I just go out for one or two meals with the same people, then never see them again- they're here for business, so I don't feel the need to explain it in a lot...

That sucks. Next time you should go to Splitt- the mostly gluten free restaurant. They have real bread and beer there, but everything else is gluten free. I went there for the first time last week and it was super good. Even my friends that eat normal food liked it.

ARCHIVED Snickers And Chewing Gum?
Heater replied to sillyyak's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Regular sized Snickers are, but not the smaller sized ones... they're made in a different factory. I can't remember if this means they're not for sure, or if there's just more possibility of cross contamination. Not sure about gum though. -

ARCHIVED Living Gluten Free With Non Celiac Roommates
Heater replied to nikki182's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
At first my roommates didn't realize how important it is to be completely gluten free and they thought that since I'd eaten gluten before, a little bit couldn't be too bad. They were really interested in what it's like and honestly didn't know about it. My roommate said it seems there's lots I can eat, but I'm just overly careful at restaurants, so I told... -
ARCHIVED Feelings Of Becoming A Complete Obsessive-compulsive Freak
Heater replied to michelleL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I laughed when I read the bottom part. When I was a little kid, long before I'd heard of celiac disease, I used to have temper tantrums when there was crumbs in the butter, and insisted on having my own butter plate "I also keep my own stick of butter. Funny thing about that, I have always been totally grossed out by crumbs in the butter-- I considered... -
ARCHIVED Same Old Food Schedule...help!
Heater replied to Ashley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, is there a link to that blog? I wouldn't mind reading more of it. Thanks! -
Does anyone else notice that they have a much lower alcohol tolerance than before? After being gluten free for just over 7 months, I can hardly drink anything (even sips go to my head) without feeling drunk. I hardly ever want to go out with my friends, because at least before when I couldn't eat, I could drink. Now I can't really do either. Anyone...

ARCHIVED Do You Ever Just Want To Try It Again?
Heater replied to KayJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that I'd get so sick, but yeah, I still want to try it sometimes. -
That's a good question... I'm always so hungry after mountain biking, and I love going home and just eating tons. That, and showering, is the best thing about biking I've done a couple of these races before, and have always eaten pasta and whatever I've felt like without putting too much thought into it. One year we even had a barbeque and ordered pizza...

Thanks guys, for the suggestions! The race I'm doing is in Canmore, Alberta, Canada, but if you're into biking, they do have ones in the States as well. Not sure where you're from, but this website lists all the races they do: www.24hoursofadrenalin.ca Heather

I'm doing a 24 mountain bike race in a couple weeks, and am wondering what the best thing is to eat (between laps and also before/during the race). It's a relay race so I'll probably only be doing 2 or 3 laps (about 18 km each). We're camping at the site, so there's not going to be anywhere to cook/heat up food. Any tips on what I should do for food?? ...
