I find that soy will give me the same symptoms that I get when I am glutened. Makes shopping a nightmare, takes me so long to read all the labels.

Thanks for the information on lectins, that makes a lot of sense. The besan flour is mixed with other flours (maize, arrowrood & rice) in the flour mix I use. I will experiment with the amount of besan flour in the mix. But on reflection, I have stopped eating hommus for the same reason so maybe the chickpeas will only come out on rare occassions...

I've started making bread using Besan (chickpea) flour and I it appears to be making me as sick as I was when I was using wheat flour. My stomach feels very bloated and uncomfortable. I thought I was safe with marshmellows - not so! They made me very sick. When I read the ingredients label I found that they had wheat starch - probably to stop them sticking together in the package. Now I make my own marshmellow. Problem solved. -

When I was pregnant I used to mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and drink it (very quickly). It used to taste terrible to drink (very salty) but provided excellent relief. -

After a particularly nasty glutening episode and developed really bad reflux which didn't respond to any of the over the counter remedies. My doctor prescribed a proton pump inhibitor. The time I find myself getting really whiny is when we have a social morning tea at my work and everyone turns up with plates of pastries, cakes, and other gluten laden goodies. I really enjoy walking as my weight bearing exercise. Arrange a time to go walking with a friend - that can make it so much more enjoyable. Walking is low-impact and so it is less likely to damage joints.

My reaction time to the initial glutening is about twelve hours - bloating, nausea, cramps. The fatigue, aching joints, lack of concentration etc usually starts at about 48 hours post-glutening and then it can take ten days to recover. -
When I added xanthum gum to my gluten free bread mix it made the bread much less crumbly - quite edible in fact. So now I add xanthum gum to most of my baking and it has improved it out of sight. Though I did overdo it once with some cookies and they were so sticky I had trouble getting them off the spoon and onto the baking tray. Ruth.

I live in Australia and I don't think you will have any trouble eating gluten free. I shop at a 'Safeway Supermarket' (part of the Woolworths chain) and it has a good gluten free section. I think it would be worth asking your GP to refer you onto an Endocronolgist. A TSH of 5.28 while it is only just out of the 'normal' range, is high. Your TSH is only part of the story. Your GP would also need to have your Free T3 and Free T4 tested (not T3 & T4).

Your TSH is at a very happy level. The range you quoted (0.350 - 5.550) is broad, but is the normal lab range. Some recent articles I have read suggest that a healthier range to use would be 0.350 - 2.50, and if that was the case your TSH would be sitting right in the middle. I have Graves Disease (Hyperthyroidism) and most of the symptoms you describe are also classic Hyperthyroid. Have you had your TSH, FT4 & FT3 tested? Untreated hyperthyroidism can also be extremely debilitating. Many Celiacs also suffer from thyroid problems. Hope you feel better soon.
