  1. HI, my son goes to pre school as well. They provide snack only as it is a part time program. Before school started in September mailed in a copy of all the do's and don'ts of Celiac Disease and the serious consequences to the Celiac if contaminated. I also asked to speak directly to his teacher before school started. We had a lengthy conversation about...
  2. Hi, you can tell your son that my aunt, 50 + years old, is a Celiac and a diabetic. She is healthy, happy, and strong. Also, my son, now 5, was diagnosed Celiac a year ago. It took us several months gluten free to really see much improvement. But, if your son's symptoms are worsening, I agree with the others. Look into other intolerances. What does...
  3. Hi, any fruit snacks or fruit roll ups put out by Betty Crocker are safe . I called when my son was first diagnosed. They said they list ingredients using terms we understand, if it doesn't say "wheat", then it isn't there. Also, I am allergic to mold. No food affects me. It is more of a seasonal problem for me because of the mold under wet leaves, etc...
  4. Thanks for the replies. It very well could be a bad year for viruses. But like I have said, he is always the one that gets sick first (I have one other son and he spends his days with my sister who has 3 while I work). And not only does he get sick first, he always gets hit the hardest. For example, he is sick now and so is my nephew. My nephews temp...
  5. He actuallly goes to preschool. It has been one viral infection after the next.
  6. I am just curious. My Celiac son seems to always be the one to bring home "sickness" to our house. Whether it be a cold or a viral infection with high fever, he is always the one to get sick first (I am home from work today because he has fifths disease but his fever has been up aroung 104). I'm just curious, is there any corrilation to the Celiac? I...
  7. I was told by my peds gi that for each person it may be different. Some people go 1 or 2 times a day. Others may go every other day or so. They have always been more concerned with is it too loose or are they unable to go. Nicole
  8. Hi, your child sounds very much like mine in the beginning. He was actually 8.1 lbs. at birth but was 2 wks early (my younger son was 10.8 lbs. ). My oldest also coundn't handle the milk protiens and was put on nutramigen until he was 12 months. He had severe reflux and he would projectile vomit with each bottle. He handled food ok but by the time he...
  9. Hi, my youngest son, who is not my Celiac, went through this too. He has not been tested yet for Celliac and shows no signs of celiac. But, he was developmentally delayed (gross motor and soft spot on head would not close for over two years). Anyway, when he was still in diapers, he was thirsty all the time and wetting very heavily. They tested him for...
  10. Hi, I actually researched the drug on my own while I was waiting for your response. If it is the same drug, it is being made by Alba Therapeutics in Baltimore. The article I read said that the FDA is putting it on an "accelerated track" due to the fact that it is the first drug being made to treat not only Celiac but also type 1 diabetes. The drug is called...
  11. Hi, I can pretty much only go by what Celiac's are told. My son has Celiac and so does my father. I have not been tested yet. If I did get tested, and I did test postive for the Celiac gene, it would not mean I am actively sick with Celiac and would not need to be Gluten free. Some people carry the gene but never develop the disease because it was never...
  12. Thanks for responding. This is very interesting. I know you are not a doctor but I haven't heard of this drug that is to be released this year. From what you do know, will it allow Celiac's to add gluten back into the diet or is it just as a precaution for the accidental ingestion? I think it is harder on me than on my 5 year old son when he can't eat...
  13. We have been having trouble finding take out that my Celiac son (5 yrs. old) can eat. We know that Wendy's is ok but he always loved Chinese food. So I decided to call two local restraunts to see if the fried rice and the BQ beef contained gluten. What I found, was that it is very difficult to get them to understand what I am asking over the phone due...
  14. Hi, are your sure she hasn't gotten into anything else? I know it can be tempting for children to cheat. Also, did she have any symptoms after she cheated? I know that having "D" can cause weight loss as well as the malasorption. I am not sure though if such a small amount can cause such drastic weight loss. I would call your Pediatrician since your...
  15. I was also told by two GI's that the genetic test could rule out Celiac but not confirm it. My son was showing high levels of antibodies but the biopsy was questionable. So he sent the biopsy out to Columbia University for a second opinion and a sample of blood out to a specialy lab in California (I can't remember the name of the lab). He asked them to...
  16. My son has Celiac and a friend at work was telling me that her grandson was "gluten sensitive" and diagnosed by a holistic doctor who basically diagnosed by eliminating gluten from diet. I don't believe the child was ever tested for Celiac. Now, a year later, the child is being reintroduced to gluten but is being given a tablet that supposedly counteracts...
  17. My son also had positive blood work but only showed lymphcytes in biopsy. He has been gluten free for 10 months. I just got done telling my sister on the phone that I think he is getting a bit chubby. Big turn around from last year .
  18. This topic does raise a question for me. As I have said before, my son's blood test was postive for gluten sensitivity but his original biopsy was nagative for Celiac. It was after the Dr. sent the biopsy out to Columbia University that he was given a positive Celiac diagnosis. This always made me nervous that he does not in fact have Celiac but just might...
  19. My celiac son potty trained early, 2 and a half. But once his symptoms got bad, he started having trouble with bowel movements. Either he couldn't go at all, or he would be so loaded with stool softeners that he would be having accidents. Now that his symptoms are under control, he still has the constipation trouble and my ped gi and my regular ped suggested...
  20. HI, my sons numbers were up over 200 as well, I don't remember how high to be exact. But, as it turned out, My Ped. GI explained that not all labs are "experts" in diagnosing Celiac and therefore, the numbers are sometimes too high. My son's blood was then sent to two specialty labs, one in California and one in Boston, who are known among GI's as being...
  21. My son was diagnosed last year at 4 years old first with the blood and then the biopsy. The biopsy was not a big deal. He handled it well and since I was so anxious for a diagnosis, I was willing to do anything. But, the biopsy actually became more of a concern because it did not confirm Celiac even though his blood was through the roof. They said nagative...
  22. Hi, the reason citric acid may be a problem is because citric acid is not necessarily made from citris (I made this mistake too). When I saw a nutritionist, she explained that citric acid is one of those questionable ingredients and should be checked into before eating because it could be derived from wheat. If the ingredients don't specify what it is derived...
  23. I just read your post and have a question. Is having geometric patterns on the tongue a symtom of Celiac? My father and my son have Celiac. I went to get tested for the antibodies during a routine physical and for some reason, the lab forgot to run the Celiac tests. That was in the summer and I have not been back to the doctors yet. I have no symptoms...
  24. The list I was given by my GI had modified food starch on the no list but with a * next to it. The * meant that it was one of the many no no's that could be bad. If it does not say on the box what it is made from, and it is not a company like Kraft that lists allergins, just call the company's 800 # and ask what their food starch is made of. Nicole
  25. Would you happen to know which flavor of Motrin is safe. As careful as I thought I was, I never checked this. We use the liquid as well. Nicole
