  1. My doctor never told me to stop giving my son dairy he was first diagnosed. And now that I am questioning if he is lactose intolerant (it has been over a year since diagnosis) the doc is saying he doubts it but he definitly was when he was first diagnosed (I can't figure out why I was never told this). I know your not an expert, but does it sound possible...
  2. Hi, this was a misconception that I was recently corrected on myself. There are people who are lactose intolerant and then there are people who are allergic or intolerant to the protein in milk. This would be concidered a casien intolerance. If your child is lactose intolerant, then a product like Lactaid that supplies the body with the lactase enzyme...
  3. ekatherine, I was not saying I would want my child to eat the "junk" food all the time. But everyone likes a treat now and again and it does not harm them one little bit. I too was raised in a home where junk food was limited but not off limits. I remember walking down to the corner store with my friends (and my $1.00 allowance )and choosing a treat...
  4. Also, you will see how well they accept the diet. My son tells people flat out "I can't eat that, I have Celiac" or he will tell people he can't have gluten. I was so proud of him the other day. I was dropping my youngest son off at summer school (his program is extended year) and my son Jacob (my Celiac) was waiting for me with 2 older boys (he is 5,...
  5. If we will be spending time with friends or family who are not Celiac, I always call ahead and ask exactly what we will be having or doing food wise. This way I am always prepared with a substitute that resembles what everyone else is eating. Thank goodness everyone has been very understanding and there are never any surprises. I have even asked his teachers...
  6. I so sympathize with you. I know this will sound so rediculous (forget about silly mommy, this is crazy mommy), but when my son was so sick they were testing him for both Celiac and Hirschsprungs (sp) Disease. If you know anything about Hirschsprungs, it requires surgery. I was actually more fearful of the Celiac because I did not want him to miss out...
  7. I agree with Vincent. When my son was tested through endoscopy, he originally came back negative. The doc. explained that the sections biopsied may not have shown much damage. So the original lab read it as negative because the villi weren't flattened. Then the doc sent it to Columbia University where some of the experts are and they gave it a positive...
  8. Hi, after a long drawn out process, we believe my son is also lactose intolerant (he is 5 and diagnosed a year ago with Celiac). Our ped. said to try to remove the lactose from his diet and see if there is improvement which we did (we are using Lactaid). We instantly saw imrpovement. My ped. GI though, diagreed and said he believes it is the Acidophilus...
  9. Hi, my son was actually tested for Pradar-Willie, not my Celiac but my son with hypotonia and developmental delays. He tested negative thank goodness, with pradar-willie they are over weight due to their brains not telling them they are full, they also have learning disabilities. We are now leaning more toward Celiac as well due to the hypotonia and his...
  10. Hi, I believe I called Good Seasons when my son first went gluten free because I use it to coat chicken (very good I might add) and they said they are gluten free. But you can always call and double check. I called everybody when we first started this. It's a good way to find out which companies you can trust without calling (ex: Kraft always labels their...
  11. Hi, so I took Jacob off of the Lactaid pills yesterday to see if we would see any change. Low and behold, today was an awful day for him. About 2 hours after breakfast (cereal with milk and a cup of milk) he was in the bathroom with a heavy, messy bm. Then, about within 2 hour after eating lunch (gluten-free pizza and milk) he was having terrible stomach...
  12. I asked my accountant about it this past tax season. He said I could not deduct it because it is not a "prescription". I live in Jersey. Nicole
  13. Hi, I agree with the others about if the blood is positive, then it is positive. My son's blood was positive and the biopsy initially came back negative. The doctor then sent it out to Columbia University in NY and they gave it a positive. It is my understanding that not all labs are too good at this yet. Also, what meds is your child on for constipation...
  14. I actually spoke with my ped. tonight and we agreed to take him off of the Lactaid but keep him on the acidophilus. I did not realize that the acidophilus could change the consistency of the bm. Am I understanding it correctly that if it were lactose intolerant he would be sick each time he ate dairy (which is everyday) instead of stretches of good or bad...
  15. Hi, I spoke with my ped. GI today. My son's food allergy blood work came back as negative for all food allergies. I went on to tell him that 17 days ago one of the docs at my ped. office suggested that I try treating him for lactose intolerance and to give him Acidophilus for the alternating constipation. Before I started this change, Jacob pooped several...
  16. Hi, we have 6 known Celiacs in our family. My son and 1 distant cousin are the only ones diagnosed as children. My father was diagnosed at 50 and only had symptoms for 2 years and my my aunt 48.
  17. Just a thought, would malnutritience (sp?) due to malabsorption cause hairloss? Sounds possible doesn't it? Did you ever see someone with severe anorexia, their hair is usually thin and brittle. Like I said, I have no knowledge on this, just an idea.
  18. Hi, I just want to pass on what I found with having a "constipated" Celiac child. My son pretty much stopped eating all together if it were during a time when he wasn't having any bowel movements. He too would go over a week without going and the longer it went on, the more he would not want to eat. The doctor had told me to imagine how it must feel to...
  19. Hi, my son is now 5 but as an infant had some trouble with reflux (projectile vomiting). He ate his solids well though and had no reaction. As he approached 1 year old he started with constipation until it bacame very severe at 4 years old. He also had the toddler tummy (sticks out and is hard), dark circles under his eyes, and very difficult behavior...
  20. Hi, what kind of insurance problems are you worrying about? I had my sons tested through our pediatrician and the ped. gastro. The only things that were ever not covered were when we had to use a lab out of our network because they were specialty labs. In one of those cases, the ped. GI wrote a letter to the insurance company asking them to cover it because...
  21. I agree with Ursala. I would talk to your doctor before you start making drastic changes to her diet. I know if the diet change is necessary than there is no choice, but this is very traumatic for kids to loose everything they enjoy (it would be for me too and I'm 32 ). Nicole
  22. If you have been glutened, how long does the syptoms last afterwards? I have been challenging my son for lactose intolerance and have seen great improvement for the past 2 weeks. Last night I ordered pizza and a salad (he was eating gluten-free pizza I made) and it was from a new place that uses croutons on their salads (which I did not know). Before I...
  23. My 5 year old son's only symptom was constipation. And it was severe. But he has always been in the 95th to 97th percentile for height and weight. He was diagnosed with Celiac a year ago. It took him about 3 months to see any improvement after going gluten-free. My father is Celiac but D was his symptom. He was extremely underweight and saw improvement...
  24. I posted a couple of weeks ago about my son continuing to have syptoms even though he is gluten free. Some very smart people here asked if it is possible that he has other intolerances (I wonder why the doctor never thought of that ). Anyway, I spoke with my Ped. and she suggested that I try taking him off lactose and to use Acidophilus (a probiotic)...
  25. Hi, I recently went onto Kellogg's web site just to see if any of the cereals have changed (like Trix and Cocoa Puffs) and are now gluten free. I typed in a question about gluten free choices and the response was that they do not offer anything gluten free but that some Celiac's may be ok with Rice Krispies as there is only a small amount of malt in them...
