  1. Thanks for your reply! I honestly thought I'd hear from more women who had problems. You certainly had a tough go at it too, huh?? I'm not pregnant now. If I were, I'd have a lot of explaining to do!! And, no, we're not planning to have another child. Although we would love to, we were blessed with two healthy children despite all of the complications...
  2. Hi! I've posted many times about my son, Zachary, but now it's a question about me. My girlfriend just sent me an article from August/2006 Good House Keeping regarding a woman's difficulties with preganancies and finally a Dx of Celiac after many, many years. It never even occured to me that I could be a carrier of the Celiac gene until my 3 year old tested...
  3. I just threw out an entire bag of gluten-free animal crackers b/c I was eating a hunk of Italian bread and reached into the bag to get cookies for the kids before I washed my hands. I'm so aggravated because I'm religious about washing my hands before I touch the gluten-free stuff. Truly, any amount of contaminated food isn't good because a little bit of...
  4. My son, Zachary, is 3 years old and gluten-free. I agree with Carla. In fact, a lot of gluten free "junk food" is much healthier for them than the real-deal! I'd just call and ask what they're serving. Everyone knows the deal with Zachary and gluten, so I always call ahead and ask my family or friends. At this point, they often call me to either let...
  5. Tanya- It's so wonderful to hear about how great Megan is doing. I've been following this thread just about everyday. I can't even put into words how happy and relieved I am for you and your family. Both Zachary and Allison were in the NICU because they were preemies....I know this doesn't even begin compare to what you're going through with Megan...
  6. Hi Kelly! Awesome!! I'm sorry I flooded you with info you already had; I'm still amazed by how many parents I worked with who already had kids in the system who still didn't know everything their kids were entitled to. Kudos to you for getting your daughter services so early!! Early Intervention is a wonderful service and, I believe, key to a child's...
  7. Hi Carla! Zachary's numerical value was 24 through Enterolab. I think my hubby not only feels badly but is also in a place that's hard to address this, too. Zachary was a 32 week preemie; I went into preterm labor at 27 weeks. He had motor delays and still has a mild language delay and mild sensory issues...all of which is typical for preemies. Fortunately...
  8. Early Intervention services are available in all 50 states. This is a federally mandated program for children ages 0-3 who present with developmental delays. Each county provides services to the children who qualify for Early Intervention services with a 33% delay in one developmental area or 25% delay in at least two developmental areas. Talk to your pediatrician...
  9. Hiya! I think many of you know the story of my 3 year old's issues with gluten, allergies, asthma, etc. So, I won't bore you with the details! Zachary has been on a strict gluten-free diet (with the exception of a couple of cc incidents) since March 8 and is doing absolutely AWESOME!! Anyway...in addition to testing pos for an active gluten sensitivity...
  10. My 3 year-old is on a gluten-free diet, so for the sake of keeping my sanity, my 18 month old is also gluten-free. It just makes things easier and less confusing. She eats all of this stuff, too! The gluten-free diet does get easier with time. "Whole foods" are always a safe bet. Don't forget to check out your personal care products, sunscreen, paints...
  11. Any suggestions for good gluten-free yogurt? I usually buy Stoneyfield Farms Vanilla for my son, but apparently they have a slow down on shipping due to renovation of their distribution plant. Thanks! --Kristy
  12. It is 100% reasonable for the preschool to ask that you send in appropriate snacks for your daughter. The district we live in will not provide snacks for any of the preschoolers due food allergies and such. I honestly prefer it this way. I also think it's 100% reasonable for you to ask the preschool staff to be cognizent of your daughter's dietary issues...
  13. Fortunately Zachary has never had failure to thrive or issues with malabsorption. He's always been way above the 50th % in weight since he was a baby; that's why it was so difficult to convince the jack-ass ped gi that something WAS wrong with him! Last year we started having Zachary evaluated to address some sensory issues and developmental delays...
  14. I'm with everyone else on this one...be upfront about it, but don't freak out about it. He's definately gonna take your lead on this one. If you make a huge deal about it, he's, understandably, gonna be a little freaked out. I'm 36 and married with two little kids, but if I were in the dating arena I'd definately be upfront . But, that's just how I handle...
  15. Hi! Zachary is allergic to nuts among other things. He loves chocolate milk, though. So I'm sure I can get him to drink the rice milk with chocolate in it. (He used to be a huge fan of Ovaltine.) Is Hershey's Syrup gluten-free?? Speaking of chocolate milk, here's a funny little gluten story to share... As bad as Zachary's poops were, my husband...
  16. I didn't realize casein was a permanent intolerance . Thanks for the info. I'm just glad we're finding all of this stuff out now while he's 3 versus when he's 13; he doesn't know any better at the moment! We hope this will just be so much of his life as he gets older that it'll be second nature. We'll see what happens when he's a teen! --Kristy
  17. Hi! I got Zachary's results from Enterolab tonight. He was already on a strict gluten-free diet for 2 1/2 months prior to sending in his stool sample!!! He also tested positive for one main gluten sensitivity/celiac gene as well as one non-celiac gluten sensitivity gene. According to Enterolab, having two copies means there is an even stronger predisposition...
  18. Thanks for the info on the Tirumph Dining Cards. I just got them in the mail yesterday. The rest. guide is awesome! We're in NJ on the PA border, so there's quite a few rest. that offer gluten-free menus that aren't that far from our house. This will certianly make going out with our little guy easier. I was thrilled to see that Charlie Brown's has gluten...
  19. Don't freak out just yet!! If you start to freak out, so will your son and everybody else around you!! Why not call your sister in-law and ask what she's serving? Worse case scenario, you've got to bring food for your son. I always have stuff for my 3 year-old son even when I know there will be gluten-free food. My family and friends have been very supportive...
  20. If your son has an issue with gluten, you'll know day one or two of a challenge. These doctors are out of their minds to ask a parent to do this to their kids. My son was on a gluten-free diet for ten days. (We KNOW that he's got MAJOR problems with gluten.) We were curious, though, as to how sensitive and how quickly he'd react to gluten. So, we gave...
  21. My 3 year-old son has been on a gluten-free diet since March. I've tossed my wooden spoons and replaced our plastic collander with stainless steel. I didn't replace my cookware...I couldn't afford to replace all of my Calphalon. That being said, I've scrubbbed and scrubbed everything tons of times. I do have a couple non-stick pans, but I don't ever...
  22. I would definately try calling the venue first and seeing where you get with that. However, if that doesn't work...do you have any friends with kids?? I'd borrow a diaper bag, some baby clothes, diapers and a wipes container. You can easily stash all sorts of stuff in the diaper bag...fold the clothes around food, empty out the wipes container and put...
  23. Thanks! I'm assuming they are specific to anyone with Celiac or Gluten problems, not just for adults. I wanted to order them for when we're out with my 3 year-old. --Kristy
  24. My three year-old son has food allergies, eczema and asthma. He has a MAJOR problem with gluten, and is on a strict gluten-free diet. When Zachary is glutened, he's a lot "bouncier", has a lot more difficulty focusing and his behavior is just awful. That is, low frustration level, yelling/crying/tantrums for no apparent reason, very irritable and difficulty...
  25. Just wondering if a tingly sensation all over your back has been a symptom for anyone. Also, what about little, itchy, poison ivy-type blisters? Thanks! --Kristy
