    ARCHIVED Applebees

Applebee's is definately NOT gluten free, but they've tried to be accomodating to my little guy. The last time we were there the mgr was very nice and honest about the fact that all of their fryers have already been used....why not have a dedicated fryer is my question!! We just get my son a plain hamburger that they cook on the grill. He's never gotten...
  3. We went to St. John in March, and had to pack a ton of stuff for my 3 year-old who is gluten-free. Our flight was also about 5 hours. For the flight, I took lots of rolled up turkey slices, cheese, yogurt, del monte peach cups, chocolate chip cookies and gluten-free cheerios. I definiately pushed the protein-rich foods first. He's allergic to egg and...
  4. Hi! My 3 year-old son is on a gluten-free diet. We'll be on the OBX the last week in June...can't wait! We're renting a house, so we'll be able to pack whatever we need and bring it down with us...including a couple basics in "cooking-gear"! I'm okay with packing a ton of food b/c we took an entire suitcase full of gluten-free food down to St. John...
  5. I am so siked!!! I was scrolling down to 'gluten-free travel' to post questions about Hershey Park (and the Outer Banks)!! We're staying at the Hershey Lodge but can certainly eat at Hotel Hershey. Awesome!!! --Kristy PS-I just called 1800 HERSHEY and went with the dining prompt. When explaining my needs to the customer service rep prior to...
  6. My 3 year-old son had a much stronger reaction to gluten when he accidentally ingested it after being strictly gluten-free for only six weeks. This reation was caused by cc from quaker rice cakes. I definately think once you've rid your body of the major amounts of gluten that you do have a stronger reaction to it.
  7. My 3 year-old son is on a gluten-free diet, but my 17 month old is not. We do not have a gluten-free kitchen/house. However, all of their snacks and "kid-friendy foods" are gluten-free; it's sooooo much easier. Anything that isn't a "safe" is out of their reach. We also have a child-proof fridge lock. (This was originally to keep them from opening the...
  8. Monica--It is sooooooooo weird that you said this!! That was the ONLY way I could explain my son's poops to the doctors. I constantly told them that Zachary was having 3-4 bm's a day that were pale and wet (like the consistency of applesauce) and had the god-awful stench of Rotavirus!!! My son's poops were like that for a year, with the blistering, bleeding...
  9. I completely agree with all of this! There aren't enough doctors who are well-versed enough in Celiac Disease in adults, never mind childen! (And as a teacher, I can tell you that you are 150% correct...we don't want to have to deal with puke if we don't have to! ) We had the Celiac panel worked up but stopped there. We weren't willing to put Zachary...
  10. Hi! Welcome!! You'll find lots of helpful information and supportive people on this board. If you're still concerned about your son's language, "listening skills" and behavior, you can request a full educational evaluation through your school district's Child Study Team. This is a federally mandated process so it doesn't matter where you live....
  11. Awesome!! I'm so happy to hear that your allergist ordered the labs. My allergist looks at the whole picture, too. Not just the food allergies. I agree with Nini; if the labs come back negative you should definitely try a gluten-free diet and see how it goes. You may have to eliminate both gluten and dairy at some point until she starts to feel better...
  12. Hi Ursala! I taught self-contained Special Education before I stayed home with my kids. I worked with kids of varying ability levels with a variety of Dx. I worked with a couple of kids with AS...they were two of my "favorite" kids! This was interesting to complete from that perspective b/c I was able to so clearly see "my kids" in many of these questions...
  13. The allergist being the one to address Celiac and order the labs is highly atypical! You could've knocked me over with a feather!! Regarding RAST testing...I don't believe it's something they automatically order. My son was allergy tested at 1 year old then again at 3 years old. The allergist didn't order the RAST labs until he was there a couple months...
  14. Believe it or not, is was my son's allergist who ordered the Celiac panel and other labs after I had discussed with him the gi issues he's had in conjunction with the food allergies..which is obviously why we were there in the first place. I figured I'd throw out the gi symptoms while we were chatting. He was the one who point blank asked if Zachary had...
  15. Karen- My just 3 year old son's behavior is absolutely, positively AWFUL when he ingests gluten. (I, of course, mean that in the most loving way as only a mother could! ) But seriously, Zachary's behavior changed, as well as many of the other symptoms, within a couple of days of removing gluten from his diet. My husband and I were just talking about...
  16. How wonderful that you're doc suggested testing for Celiac. Just make sure he orders the full panel which consists of 5 different labs. Also, confirm that all of the labs for the Celiac panel were infact drawn before you leave the lab. The lab screwed up my son's bloodwork and "forgot" to draw blood for two of the tests. We unfortunatley didn't find...
  17. That's super!! How nice is it that you have the support of your ped gi??!! After being off gluten for just a few days, my 3 year old showed major signs of improvement, too. Isn't it the best when you finally figure out the answer!!?? --Kristy
  18. Hi Tia! Yes, that certainly sounds familiar to me! My just 3 year old son is highly symptomatic of celiac disease, however he had negative lab results and there's never been failure to thrive so it's very difficult to get a pediatric gi recognize something IS actually wrong. I'm not at all surprised you saw a positive change in your son just a couple...
  19. Thanks for the explanation!! --Kristy
  20. My three year old had a bazillion symptoms of Celiac prior to going on a gluten free diet. BTW-he's doing great on it!! (no thanks to the medical community! ) What a difference a couple months and NO GLUTEN make! Anyway, one of the symptoms I could never quite figure out when I specifically researched children's symptoms was "wasting" or "wasted buttocks...
  21. I would definiately persue allergy testing if you think your child could be reacting to other foods. My son has had eczema since he was a baby. It's MUCH better now!! We've had him allergy tested twice (once at a year and just a couple of months ago when he turned 3). He's allergic to tomatoes, egg whites, soy and peanuts on top of the severe issues...
  22. Thanks for the tips! I always use papertowels to wipe down the counters, table, stove, etc. I do try to remember to put the gluten free stuff on a papertowel or a clean plate while I'm getting stuff ready. I constantly wash my hands before I handle his stuff. He does have his own cabinet for his snacks and mixes. I am definately going to get a dedicated...
  23. My 3 year old son ate lots of the apple cinnamon mini's through out the course of a week. He was a an absolute mess. We had an awful week. I would NEVER give him these again.
  24. Oh, yes...these are YUMMY!! My son is on a gluten free diet and we ALL love them! I made them for Easter and no one knew they were gluten-free. I usually scatter 1 c. Nestle semi sweet chocolate chips on top before I put them in the oven. Sprinkle them with powdered sugar when they're cool, and you've got a an awesome dessert! They're also really good...
  25. Heather- Trust your instincts as a mom. NO ONE knows your child better than you. If you're a nutcase mother, then me and everybody else on this board is too! If you don't plan on doing any additional bloodwork or having a biopsy done, I'd start her on a gluten free diet immediately. My son has had many "classic" symptoms of celiac disease since...
